    The zero-energy state in graphene in a high magnetic field

    The fate of the charge-neutral Dirac point in graphene in a high magnetic field HH has been investigated at low temperatures (T∼T\sim 0.3 K). In samples with small V0V_0 (the gate voltage needed to access the Dirac point), the resistance R0R_0 at the Dirac point diverges steeply with HH, signalling a crossover to an insulating state in intense field. The approach to the insulating state is highly unusual. Despite the steep divergence in R0R_0, the profile of R0R_0 vs. TT in fixed HH saturates to a TT-independent value below 2 K, consistent with charge carrying gapless excitations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Expectation adjustment in the housing market: insights from the Scottish auction system

    This paper examines price expectation adjustment of house buyers and sellers to rapid changes in the housing market using data from Scotland where houses are sold through 'first-price sealed-bid' auctions. These auctions provide more information on market signals, incentives and the behaviour of market participants than private treaty sales. This paper therefore provides a theoretical framework for analysing revealed preference data generated from these auctions. We specifically focus on the analysis of the selling to asking price difference, the 'bid-premium'. The bid-premium is shown to be affected by expectations of future price movements, market duration and high bidding frequency. The bid-premium reflects consumers' expectations, adapting to market conditions more promptly than asking price setting behaviour and final sale prices. The volatile conditions of the recent housing market bubble are fully reflected in the bid-premium, whereas the asking and sale prices are much less prone to rapid movements

    Phase coherence and the Nernst effect at magic angles in organic conductors

    A giant Nernst signal was recently observed for fields near crystallographic directions in (TMTSF)2_2PF6_6. Such large Nernst signals are most naturally associated with the motion of pancake vortices. We propose a model in which phase coherence is destroyed throughout the sample except in planes closely aligned with the applied field H\bf H. A small tilt above or below the plane changes the direction and density of the penetrating vortices and leads to a Nernst signal that varies with the tilt angle of H\bf H as observed. The resistance notches at magic angles are understood in terms of flux-flow dissipation from field-induced vortices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Bulk Band Gap and Surface State Conduction Observed in Voltage-Tuned Crystals of the Topological Insulator Bi2_2Se3_3

    We report a transport study of exfoliated few monolayer crystals of topological insulator Bi2_2Se3_3 in an electric field effect (EFE) geometry. By doping the bulk crystals with Ca, we are able to fabricate devices with sufficiently low bulk carrier density to change the sign of the Hall density with the gate voltage VgV_g. We find that the temperature TT and magnetic field dependent transport properties in the vicinity of this VgV_g can be explained by a bulk channel with activation gap of approximately 50 meV and a relatively high mobility metallic channel that dominates at low TT. The conductance (approximately 2 ×\times 7e2/he^2/h), weak anti-localization, and metallic resistance-temperature profile of the latter lead us to identify it with the protected surface state. The relative smallness of the observed gap implies limitations for EFE topological insulator devices at room temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Unusual Nernst effect suggestive of time-reversal violation in the striped cuprate La2−x_{2-x}Bax_xCuO4_4

    The striped cuprate La2−x_{2-x}Bax_xCuO4_4 (x=18)x=\frac18) undergoes several transitions below the charge-ordering temperature TcoT_{co} = 54 K. From Nernst experiments, we find that, below TcoT_{co}, there exists a large, anomalous Nernst signal eN,even(H,T)e_{N,even}(H,T) that is symmetric in field HH, and remains finite as H→0H\to 0. The time-reversal violating signal suggests that, below TcoT_{co}, vortices of one sign are spontaneously created to relieve interlayer phase frustration.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
