    Cooling and recombination processes in cometary plasma

    The ion electron plasma in comets is examined for cooling processes which result from its interactions with the neutral coma. A cometary coma model is formulated that is composed predominantly of H2O and its decomposition products where electrons are cooled in a variety of processes at rates varying with energy. It is shown that solar plasma plus accumulated cometary ions and electrons is affected very strongly as it flows into the coma. The electrons are rapidly cooled and all but some 10% of the ions undergo charge exchange. Photodissociation of H2O is assumed where ion electron recombination is the dominant loss process

    A wireless multi-sensor subglacial probe: design and preliminary results

    This paper introduces a new way to investigate in situ processes, the wireless multi-sensor probe, as part of an environmental sensor network. Instruments are housed within a 'probe' which can move freely and so behave like a clast. These were deployed in the ice and till at Briksdalsbreen, Norway. The sensors measure temperature, resistivity, case stress, tilt angle and water pressure and send their data to a base station on the glacier surface via radio links. These data are then forwarded by radio to a reference station with mains power 2.5 km away, from where they are sent to a web server in the UK. The system deployed during 2004/05 was very successful and a total of 859 probe days worth of data from the ice and till were collected, along with GPS, weather and diagnostic data about the system

    Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemahaman tabib etnis Tionghoa di Surabaya mengenai yīnyáng dan cara penerapan konsep yīnyáng dalam profesi mereka.Teori yang menunjang terdiri atas teori keseimbangan yīnyáng merupakan dasar vitalitas kehidupan; keterkaitan konsep yīnyáng dengan keseimbangan bekerja, istirahat, dan bergerak. Artikel ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dan teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara wawancara semi terstruktur kepada masyarakat etnis Tionghoa Surabaya yang berprofesi sebagai tabib. Dari hasil penelitian diketahui bahwa para responden semuanya mengetahui konsep yīnyáng, sehingga semua responden menerapkan konsep keseimbangan yīnyáng dalam profesi mereka masing-masing

    Field-Tuning of the electron and hole populations in the ruthenate Bi_3Ru_3O_11

    Experiments on the Hall coefficient R_H and heat capactity C reveal an unusual, compensated electronic ground state in the ruthenate Bi_3Ru_3O_11. At low temperature T, R_H decreases linearly with magnetic field |H| for fields larger than the field scale set by the Zeeman energy. The results suggest that the electron and hole populations are tuned by H in opposite directions via coupling of the spins to the field. As T is decreased below 5 K, the curve C(T)/T vs. T^2 shows an anomalous flattening consistent with a rapidly growing Sommerfeld parameter \gamma(T).     Genetic Regulation of Puberty Timing in Humans.

    Understanding the regulation of puberty timing has relevance to developmental and human biology and to the pathogenesis of various diseases. Recent large-scale genome-wide association studies on puberty timing and adult height, body mass index (BMI) and central body shape provide evidence for shared biological mechanisms that regulate these traits. There is a substantial genetic overlap between age at menarche in women and BMI, with almost invariable directional consistency with the epidemiological associations between earlier menarche and higher BMI. By contrast, the genetic loci identified for age at menarche are largely distinct from those identified for central body shape, while alleles that confer earlier menarche can be associated with taller or shorter adult height. The findings of population-based studies on age at menarche show increasing relevance for other studies of rare monogenic disorders and enrich our understanding of the mechanisms that regulate the timing of puberty and reproductive function.This work was supported by the MRC.This is the author accepted manuscript.     Elucidating the genetic basis of social interaction and isolation.

    The negative impacts of social isolation and loneliness on health are well documented. However, little is known about their possible biological determinants. In up to 452,302 UK Biobank study participants, we perform genome-wide association study analyses for loneliness and regular participation in social activities. We identify 15 genomic loci (P < 5 × 10-8) for loneliness, and demonstrate a likely causal association between adiposity and increased susceptibility to loneliness and depressive symptoms. Further loci were identified for regular attendance at a sports club or gym (N = 6 loci), pub or social club (N = 13) or religious group (N = 18). Across these traits there was strong enrichment for genes expressed in brain regions that control emotional expression and behaviour. We demonstrate aetiological mechanisms specific to each trait, in addition to identifying loci that are pleiotropic across multiple complex traits. Further study of these traits may identify novel modifiable risk factors associated with social withdrawal and isolation
