    THINKING ALOUD PROTOCOL FOR SMART TRANSLATION

    A language is an important tool in communication. To produce a smooth relationship between countries that have different languages, the English language functions as Lingua Franca. To understand the information in English, a good understanding is needed. Being able to translate English texts is one of the basic forms of understanding itself. Unfortunately, numerous English language learners; from junior high schools to university levels, are still experiencing problems in this translation. This study aims to uncover the strategies of students in translating English texts into Indonesian by using the Thinking Aloud Protocol method. The subjects of this study were students in semester V (five) who had gone through Structure I to Structure IV subjects. This research was conducted in the scope of the University of Muhammadiyah Palu. From this research, the most widely used translation strategy is done by students as well as the prototype of the translation process to produce good translation

    Fulltime students have more free time than working students. They can spare a lot of time on doing tasks from their lecturers and spend the rest to play or to do any other activity they like. While working students must share their time wisely to make a balance of studying and working. The hardship of balancing these two states in some ways, affects students’ achievement in class. To get better achievement, there are many influencing factors. One of them is motivation.     The objective of this research was to find out the factors affecting the pronunciation difficulty of 8th grade students MTs.N Palu Barat. This is a descriptive research. The respondents of this research consist of 38 students. The instruments of the research were non-test consisting of interview, tape recorder, and questionnaire. The data were collected by interviewing English teacher, recording students, and distributing the questionnaire. The result of this research shows some finding. Firstly, the result of interview showed the factors affecting the pronunciation difficulties of students were low motivation, lack of confidence, insupporting environment, do not use English as their primary language, have no enough ability in pronunciation, less attention, influenced by their accent and the orientation of the scool generally. Secondly, the result of recording showed that students did some mistake in pronouncing the words in English.

    IMPROVING VOCABULARY MASTERY OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGH CONTEXTUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGY

    This research is a pre-experimental research that was conducted to prove whether using the Contextual Teaching and Learning Strategy effectively improves vocabulary mastery of the grade VII students of Junior High School in Balaesang. The sample of the research was 29 students that were chosen using the cluster random sampling technique. The researcher applied two instruments, namely, a test and a non-test. The test consisted of pre-test and post-test; meanwhile, the non-test consisted of observation. The data analysis results indicate that the research hypothesis is accepted. The mean pre-test score is 36.27, while the mean post-test score is 71.17. The coefficient of these tests is 34.90. It shows that there is an improvement in students’ mean scores. Then through a test, this is a different significance of pre-test and post-test. In short, the Contextual Teaching and Learning Strategy effectively improved the vocabulary mastery of grade VII of Junior High School students in Balaesang

    The purpose of this research is to analyze the students’ strategies in speaking English as foreign language. This research was conducted at the tenth-grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Palu in the academic year 2020/2021. There were 36 students selected as sample of the research. The researcher applied descriptive method as the design. The data were obtained from interview and questionnaire. The result of this research show that the strategies used by students are: cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, communication strategies, social strategies, socio-affective strategies, direct strategies (memory and compensation), indirect strategies (affective), management and planning strategies, communicative-experiential strategies, and interpersonal strategies. Most of the students use those strategies in their classroom activities and daily life based on their answers in interview

    This research explains students’ techniques in overcoming anxiety during speaking. It applied descriptive qualitative method. In collecting data, the researchers used questionnaire and interview. There were three significant aspects of the data analysis; data reduction, data display, and data verification. The result of this research shows that students implement fifteen techniques to overcome anxiety during speaking; 1have good preparation, 2memorize unfamiliar vocabulary, 3practice with friends, 4practice in front of mirror, 5do eye contact with audience, 6stay positive, 7keep calm and relaxed, 8holding object, 9take a note or concept, 10interact to the audience, 11use simple words, 12use code-mixing, 13speak loud and clear, 14use gesture, and 15look at the other object around the audience.   Keywords: Technique, Overcoming, Anxiety, Speakin

    LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION CHALLENGES FOR EFL STUDENTS

    Interpreting is a skill that is not easy to master. There are various difficulties faced by English as a foreign language students, especially those who are doing interpreting activities for the first time. This study aims to reveal the challenges faced by students in interpreting and find the most appropriate solution in overcoming these challenges. The subject of this research are the fifth-semester students of the English Education Study Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palu, eliminating students who had not completed the Structure Course to the last level, and the Skills Course (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). Of the 10 statement items related to the difficulties that a novice interpreter might experience, the samples agreed with nine statements. These difficulties are lack of vocabulary, terms translation, finding equivalent words, difficulty understanding pronunciation, mastery of the topic, remembering, limited time, anxiety, and concentration. While for the interpretation of numbers, the sample did not rate this as a difficulty. Recommended solutions are given to each of these difficulties. They are: developing reading habits to overcome lack of vocabulary; using original language to solve the term translation; improving an equally good level of mastery in the source language and the target language to solve the word equivalence problem; strengthening pronunciation skills as a solution for difficulty in understanding speaker pronunciation; understanding that every interpreter will be informed in advance about the topic they will interpret; taking notes to face the memorization problem; broadening knowledge and having a good preparation to always avoing the problem of limited time before the interpreting process; realizing the source of enxiety and mastering the topic to help reducing anxiety; and having an excellent listening skill and self control as the solution for concentration problem.
