    The Effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Courses in Improving the Emergency Medicine Residents and Interns' Ability to Regulate their Emotions in Threatening or Stressful Events

    Background: Given that the duties of an emergency medicine (EM) specialist are much more complicated than the other health care professionals, inexperience, weakness or inability to make appropriate decisions, and lack of control over their emotions and stress can lead to medical errors. This study aimed at determining the effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) of emotion regulation on the EM assistants' and interns' level of satisfaction and cognitive control of anger and stress. Materials and Methods: In this study, 25 EM residents and interns were trained in the virtual CBT course while 19 ones were not given any training in the control group and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) were filled before and after the training intervention. Results: After the training intervention, the dimensions of catastrophizing and other blame in the experimental group with the means of 3.84 ± 1.40 and 3.16 ± 0.94 respectively were significantly lower than these dimensions in the control group with the means of 5.68 ± 1.76 and 4.73 ± 1.15, respectively (P value < 0.05). Moreover, the refocus on planning in the experimental group with the means of 8.40 ± 1.53 was significantly higher than in the control group with the means of 7.00 ± 2.05 (P value < 0.05). Conclusion: CBT method used in this study may be effective in controlling the emotions of EM interns and residents. CBT may help them to regulate anger and stress and have the ability to control their emotions during or after the experience of threatening or stressful events

    The dataset on rural women’s awareness and attitudes about residential constructions in accordance with the health standards A case study of Gilan-e-Gharb, Iran

    Residence can affect various aspects of one׳s physical, psychological and social health. Therefore, the present dataset aimed to assess the level of rural housewives’ awareness and attitudes towards the importance of residence and its compliance with health standards. To collect the present dataset, four villages were selected from the Gilan-e-Gharb township using the randomized cluster sampling method, then 25 subjects were chosen from each village (totaling 100 altogether). Furthermore, the subjects’ awareness and attitudes were measured using a researcher-made questionnaire, and the data were then analyzed using the SPSS Statistical Software Version 21.0. The obtained data demonstrated that rural housewives’ awareness and attitudes towards the subject were significantly different in terms of education and age group (P 0.05). Based on the obtained data, the awareness and attitudes of rural women towards the importance and necessity of health standards of residence were low and moderate, respectively. In addition, providing rural women with effective training in various ways to raise their awareness and attitudes is of prime significance.     Intra-arterial pulse wave analysis during thrombectomy for the assessment of collateral status - A feasibility study

    <div><p>Purpose</p><p>Knowledge of the collateralization of an occluded vessel is important for the risk-benefit analysis of difficult revascularization maneuvers during mechanical thrombectomy. If the territory behind a clot is well perfused, one could desist from performing a risky thrombectomy maneuver. The arterial pulse pressure curve may serve as an indicator for the collateralization of an occluded target vessel. We investigated the feasibility of arterial pulse measurements with a standard microcatheter.</p><p>Methods</p><p>We measured the intra-arterial blood pressure proximal and distal to the clot in 40 thrombectomy maneuvers in a porcine stroke model. We used a microcatheter (Trevo Pro 18, Stryker, Kalamazoo, CA, USA), a pressure transducer (MEMSCAP SP844), an AdInstruments Powerlab 16/35 workstation, and LabChart 8 Software (AdInstruments, Dunedin, New Zealand).</p><p>Results</p><p>Median arterial blood pressure proximal and distal to the clot was 96.0 mmHg (IQR, 23.8 mmHg) and 47.5 mmHg (IQR, 43.5 mmHg), respectively (p < .001). The median difference between systolic maximum and diastolic minimum proximal and distal to the clot decreased significantly from 1.8 mmHg (IQR, 3.6 mmHg) to 0.0 mmHg (IQR, 0.5 mmHg) (p < .001). There was loss of the curve in 26 of 40 cases and loss of pressure in 23 of 40 cases (p = .008). There was no significant correlation between vessel diameter and either loss of the pulse pressure curve (p = .20) or overall pressure loss (p = .31).</p><p>Conclusion</p><p>It is possible to measure the pulse pressure proximal and distal to the clot with a standard microcatheter used during mechanical thrombectomy.</p></div

    D-Limonene Alleviates Acute Kidney Injury Following Gentamicin Administration in Rats: Role of NF-κB Pathway, Mitochondrial Apoptosis, Oxidative Stress, and PCNA

    Clinical application of gentamicin (GM) is well known to be associated with the development of acute kidney injury (AKI). This study was the first to investigate the possible protective effects of D-limonene (D-lim) on AKI following GM administration in rats. 32 rats arranged in four groups (n=8): (1) the control group received saline intraperitoneally (0.5 ml/day) and orally (0.5 ml/day), (2) the D-lim group received D-lim (100 mg/kg) orally and saline (0.5 ml/day) intraperitoneally, (3) the GM group received GM (100 mg/kg/day) intraperitoneally and saline (0.5 ml/day) orally, and (4) the treated group received intraperitoneal GM (100 mg/kg) and oral D-lim (100 mg/kg). All treatments were performed daily for 12 consecutive days. Results revealed that D-lim ameliorated GM-induced AKI, oxidative stress, mitochondrial apoptosis, and inflammation. D-lim showed nephroprotective effects as reflected by the decrease in serum urea and creatinine and improvement of renal histopathological changes. D-lim alleviated GM-induced oxidative stress by increasing the activities of renal catalase, serum and renal glutathione peroxidase, and renal superoxide dismutase and decreasing renal malondialdehyde and serum nitric oxide levels. Intriguingly, D-lim suppressed mitochondrial apoptosis by considerably downregulating Bax and caspase-3 (Casp-3) mRNA and protein expressions and markedly enhancing Bcl2 mRNA and protein expressions. Furthermore, D-lim significantly decreases GM-induced inflammatory response through downregulation of NF-κB, IL-6, and TNF-α mRNA and/or protein expressions and decrease in renal myeloperoxidase activity. Finally, D-lim remarkably downregulated PCNA protein expression in the treated group compared with the GM group. In brief, this study showed that D-lim alleviated AKI following GM administration in rats, partially through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic activities as well as downregulation of PCNA expression

    Program Evaluation:A Different Function for Logbook

    Introduction: Various studies show that Log book can be also used in evaluation of medical course curriculum in clinical level in addition to evaluation of students’ achievement and their level of competencies. This article was to investigate the applicability of this new usage of Log book . Methods: Logbooks were designed by faculty members through various sessions in clinical departments in six sections of introduction, outcomes and essentials of learning, disease exposure case reports, communication skills evaluation, procedural skills learning in the morning and at the time of shift. Logbooks were filled by students and returned.Then, frequency of observed cases by students and the fields used by the departments were calculated. Results: The students had not observed 5 diseases (26%) in orthopedic Dept., 6 diseases (50%) in neurology Dept., 15diseases (68%) in infectious diseases Dept. and 1 disease (6%) in toxicology Dept. But, all diseases had been observed in ENT Dept by students. Log books in Dept. of internal medicine were so incomplete that their data were not usable. Departments of orthopedics and neurology from outpatient clinics, Department of infectious diseases from hospitalization ward, Department of toxicology from emergency had the highest usage. Discussion: If students, faculty members and residents in educational departments know well about the importance and role of logbook and observe its function results, logbook can be used for evaluation of educational curriculum

    A transitional curriculum for preparing medical students for internship, does it work?

    Background: In a formative evaluation, we were supposed to find whether an innovative program has some merits to be continued or not. We also determined the critical points of the program. The evaluated program was a clinical pre-clerkship curriculum launched for departing to a less stressful medical clerkship. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the information contained in the students′ logbooks. Using Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure standardized questionnaire, we also assessed the students′ perception of learning environment within six clinical departments. Results: Totally, 64% of expected patient contacts, and teaching of more than 71% of required skills at 4 departments were carried out and students had more positive than negative perspective of their learning environments. Conclusion: The evaluand is a worthwhile program to be continued, though it needs some considerations for improvement

    Data on drinking water quality using water quality index (WQI) and assessment of groundwater quality for irrigation purposes in Qorveh&Dehgolan, Kurdistan, Iran

    This data article aimed to investigate the quality of drinking water of Qorveh and Dehgolan Counties in Kurdistan province based on the water quality index (WQI) and agricultural quality index based on RSC, PI, KR, MH, Na, SAR and SSP indices. Also, Piper diagram was used to determine hydro chemical features of the groundwater area. The calculation of WQI for groundwater samples indicated that 36% of the samples could be considered as excellent water and 64% of the samples were classified as good water category. The results of the calculated indices for agricultural water quality indicate that water quality in all collected samples are in a good and excellent category. The Piper classification showed that dominant type of groundwater hydro chemical faces of region was calcium bicarbonate (Ca-HCO3−). Keywords: Groundwater, WQI, Irrigation, Kurdistan, Ira
