    This article assesses the role of the ICT in the development of fishermen. It discusses the issue of how ICT can help the fishermen in their daily fishing routine. ICT covers a number of tools and within the scope of this study, it emphasizes on the benefits and advantages of mobile phones, GPS, sonar, radio, television and internet. The results revealed that ICT gives significant improvement in their life. ICT have provided market access to fishermen for sell their produce and a better availability of up-to date information about weather and emergency. Additionally, ICT expands their markets and felt safe and more secure at sea. Similarly fishermen were close with their family and friends

    Mobile news: what kinds of information needed by the youth?

    Information can be obtained through various means and one of them is through mobile news (M-news). It is a new concept in searching for information. The information searching emphasis on individual’s ability to obtain information using devices such as smart phones with Internet access without being tied to a certain physical location. Thus, this study was undertaken to find out types of news chosen by youth through mobile news: and to identify the relationship between motivating factors in using mobile news with the youth acceptance. The results of the study show that the types of news chosen by youth through mobile news are crime and entertainment. Further, result of the Pearson’s correlation test shows that there is a positive and significant relationship between motivating factors in using mobile news and the youth acceptance. In conclusion, it is hoped that the mobile news could be one of the leading learning medium

    Problems in using the wireless village services in Malaysia: the non-users perspectives

    This study aims to identify problems faced by rural community in Malaysia in using the wireless village services. The study is quantitative in nature and was conducted in four districts in Malaysia, namely Setiawan (Perak), Bahau (Negeri Sembilan), Marang (Terengganu) and Kundasang (Sabah). With a total of 300 respondents the study used a survey method to identify the problems faced by an ICT project called 1Malaysia Wireless Village. Analysis performed has confirmed on four main problems that were possibly affected the progress of rural development and digital equality towards economic development. A number of discussions have been highlighted and it is a hope that it can assist the concern parties in constructing the best ICT usage strategies particularly among the rural community

    Illustrating news bias towards Islam and Muslims in Malaysia and Indonesia by Wall Street Journal and The Telegraph

    This article attempts to look at how two international newspapers, Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and The Telegraph (TT), have reported on Islam and Muslims in Malaysia and Indonesia from 2012 to 2014. The study explores the demography of the news articles, including the article frequency, number of paragraphs, news focus and lastly the news sources. A total of 420 news paragraphs from a collection of 20 news articles from WSJ and 10 articles from TT were analyzed. The researchers used the SPSS program to analyze the demography of the news and the news sources used. In assessing the extent of news bias, the researchers used a qualitative content analysis tool (QSR NVivo 11). The findings revealed that a majority of the news articles studied had reported negatively on Islam and Muslim issues in Malaysia and Indonesia. Based on this fact, it can be seen that Islam in Southeast Asian countries is still receiving negative reporting from the Western media

    Interpersonal communication skill barrier faced by cardiology doctors at National Heart Centre Malaysia

    Issues concerning on the health care especially the relationship between doctors and patients have been discussed broadly. Most of the researches concerning the health care were based on the behaviour and patients’ perception on the service provided in the health care services. The main objective of this paper is to focus on the barrier faced by the doctors in using interpersonal communication skills (IPC) during interacting with their patients. This study uses qualitative methods and a phenomenological approach was adopted in this research. A total of 15 cardiology doctors were interviewed. An in-depth interview and observation were used to study the interpersonal communication skills used by doctors in National Heart Institute Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Researchers then transcribed the data verbatim and analysed it using ATLAS.ti7 software in order to allow us to code the key themes, sub-themes and inter-relationships. Results of the study show that the main IPC barriers are time and language which interrelated with the consulting session of cardiology doctors with their patients. Based on the results gained, it is recommended that doctor can be given training and skills in managing time during the counselling session with their patients and the severe time limitation that doctors work under. Through the training on time management during the consulting session, doctors may more effectively and efficiently used their IPC with patients

    Evaluating demographic factors between gender on Facebook

    Social networking sites have increased the way individuals across the globe relate and connect to each other with Facebook being the leading site. The identity that an individual takes depends on one’s target audiences; thus, determining the content of their profile. The offline activities of an individual determine the online activities. This implies that Facebook activities are directly influenced by demographic factors. As such, the study has evaluated the impact demographic factors such as age, name, gender, and relationship status has on Facebook. The researchers suggest that most people use fake names, either full or some part of their Facebook names. In addition, most of the Facebook users are young people, especially college students. Besides, the gender of a user determines the main activities that one engages into in Facebook. Most females are concerned with privacy and trust issues with a higher tendency of updating statuses and uploading photos more frequently than male. Lastly, the study found that relationship status has a direct impact on Facebook identity representation where unmarried or divorced people use Facebook more often while married, engaged or dating users tend to be more conservative in their activities and relation with other people. The study supports the previous studies on the impacts of demographics and gender on the online behavior of Facebook users. Further, the study offers new knowledge of how the variations of the demographics impact the online presentation of individuals

    Dasar keselamatan siber Malaysia: tinjauan terhadap kesedaran netizen dan undang-undang

    Undang-undang merupakan salah satu dasar kerajaan yang diwujudkan untuk kebaikan negara. Hal ini kerana melalui undang-undang kita dapat mengatur dan mengawal masyarakat. Walau bagaimanapun, kebanyakan masyarakat tidak menyukai undang-undang kerana mereka beranggapan hidup mereka tidak bebas. Dalam konteks Internet pula, undang-undang siber dicipta bagi memastikan netizen menggunakan ruang siber dengan baik dan berhemah. Antara langkah yang baik dalam menangani isu ancaman siber adalah melalui penguatkuasaan undang-undang siber. Walau bagaimanapun, netizen masih tidak menyedari tentang kewujudan undang-undang siber dan peningkatan angka kes jenayah siber setiap tahun. Justeru, kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kesedaran informan terhadap kewujudan undang-undang siber dan menganalisis pelaksanaan undang-undang ancaman keselamatan siber di Malaysia. Dari segi metodologi, kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif iaitu kumpulan fokus, temu bual mendalam dan analisis dokumen untuk mendapatkan data kajian yang berkualiti. Jumlah informan kumpulan fokus ialah seramai 35 orang pengguna Internet manakala jumlah informan temu bual mendalam adalah seramai 6 orang pegawai kerajaan. Antara dokumen utama yang dianalisis ialah akta dan perundangan, laporan tahunan dan siaran media. Hasil kajian mendapati informan kumpulan fokus tidak mengetahui kewujudan undang-undang siber kerana mereka merasakan undang-undang tersebut tidak penting, selain informan kurang peka dan mengamalkan sifat sambil lewa. Hasil analisis dokumen juga mendapati terdapat beberapa undang-undang siber yang boleh digunakan untuk mengatasi masalah ancaman siber seperti Akta Komunikasi dan Multimedia 1998, Akta Jenayah Komputer 1997, Akta Perdagangan Elektronik 2006, Akta Perlindungan Data Peribadi 2010 dan Akta Perlindungan Pengguna 1999 (Pindaan 2010)

    Faktor kejayaan dan kegagalan projek ICT di luar bandar

    The success and failure of ICT projects depends on how the relevant agency set the strategy to attract the local community to use the facility. The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that contributing to the success and failure of such project. This research is based on Technology Acceptance Model. The study involved 60 supervisors, 1250 participants and 716 non-participant of the rural ICT projects were interviewed to get their information regarding the issue. It was found that among the supervisors, they said that equipment is crucial for the success of rural ICT projects, followed by management, finance and support services. However, among the project participants, they mentioned that management as the important factor for the success of rural ICT projects, followed by equipment, finance and programs. With regard to factors that may lead to project failure, the supervisors identified equipment as the major factor, followed by finance, management and support services. Nevertheless, the project participants said that finance as an important factor to the failure of rural ICT projects, followed by equipment, management and support services. Thus, it can be said that there are not much different among the supervisors and the project participants in relation to the factors that contribute to the success or failure of rural ICT projects

    Kajian keperluan dan penerimaan remaja terhadap akhbar

    Membaca pelbagai jenis maklumat di dalam akhbar membantu untuk membentuk dan membina minda remaja. Walaupun akhbar mempunyai pelbagai kandungan, ia semakin kurang menarik minat remaja untuk menerimanya sebagai salah satu bentuk bahan bacaan mereka. Dengan itu, objektif kajian ini adalah mengenal pasti jenis-jenis berita yang menjadi pilihan remaja; dan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara faktor keperluan dengan penerimaan akhbar oleh remaja. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan 387 responden yang berumur antara16 tahun hingga 17 tahun dari sekolah menengah kebangsaan Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur. Data kajian telah dianalisis dengan menggunakan Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) versi 15.0. Kedua-dua jenis statistik yang digunakan ialah statistik deskriptif dan statistik inferensi. Statistik deskriptif telah digunakan untuk mengenal pasti nilai-nilai peratusan, min, purata, dan sisihan piawai. Statistik inferensi telah digunakan untuk menerangkan hubungan antara pemboleh ubah yang dikaji. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa jenis berita yang menjadi pilihan remaja adalah berita hiburan. Hasil ujian Korelasi Pearson menunjukkan bahawa terdapat hubungan yang positif dan signifikan antara keperluan dan penerimaan. Dengan merujuk kepada hasil kajian, dicadangkan faktor-faktor keperluan remaja perlu dikekalkan dalam setiap kandungan akhbar. Oleh itu, institusi akhbar dicadangkan menerbitkan lebih banyak bahan-bahan pendidikan dan bermaklumat untuk meningkatkan pemahaman remaja terhadap sesuatu berita
