    We analyze the distribution of PageRank on a directed configuration model and show that as the size of the graph grows to infinity it can be closely approximated by the PageRank of the root node of an appropriately constructed tree. This tree approximation is in turn related to the solution of a linear stochastic fixed point equation that has been thoroughly studied in the recent literature

    Electrostatic attraction between cationic-anionic assemblies with surface compositional heterogeneities

    Electrostatics plays a key role in biomolecular assembly. Oppositely charged biomolecules, for instance, can co-assembled into functional units, such as DNA and histone proteins into nucleosomes and actin-binding protein complexes into cytoskeleton components, at appropriate ionic conditions. These cationic-anionic co-assemblies often have surface charge heterogeneities that result from the delicate balance between electrostatics and packing constraints. Despite their importance, the precise role of surface charge heterogeneities in the organization of cationic-anionic co-assemblies is not well understood. We show here that co-assemblies with charge heterogeneities strongly interact through polarization of the domains. We find that this leads to symmetry breaking, which is important for functional capabilities, and structural changes, which is crucial in the organization of co-assemblies. We determine the range and strength of the attraction as a function of the competition between the steric and hydrophobic constraints and electrostatic interactions.Comment: JCP June/200

    Attractive Interactions Between Rod-like Polyelectrolytes: Polarization, Crystallization, and Packing

    We study the attractive interactions between rod-like charged polymers in solution that appear in the presence of multi-valence counterions. The counterions condensed to the rods exhibit both a strong transversal polarization and a longitudinal crystalline arrangement. At short distances between the rods, the fraction of condensed counterions increases, and the majority of these occupy the region between the rods, where they minimize their repulsive interactions by arranging themselves into packing structures. The attractive interaction is strongest for multivalent counterions. Our model takes into account the hard-core volume of the condensed counterions and their angular distribution around the rods.     Ultrafast carrier dynamics in terahertz photoconductors and photomixers: beyond short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors

    Efficient terahertz generation and detection are a key prerequisite for high performance terahertz systems. Major advancements in realizing efficient terahertz emitters and detectors were enabled through photonics-driven semiconductor devices, thanks to the extremely wide bandwidth available at optical frequencies. Through the efficient generation and ultrafast transport of charge carriers within a photo-absorbing semiconductor material, terahertz frequency components are created from the mixing products of the optical frequency components that drive the terahertz device – a process usually referred to as photomixing. The created terahertz frequency components, which are in the physical form of oscillating carrier concentrations, can feed a terahertz antenna and get radiated in case of a terahertz emitter, or mix with an incoming terahertz wave to down-convert to DC or to a low frequency photocurrent in case of a terahertz detector. Realizing terahertz photoconductors typically relies on short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors as the photo-absorbing material, where photocarriers are quickly trapped within one picosecond or less after generation, leading to ultrafast carrier dynamics that facilitates high-frequency device operation. However, while enabling broadband operation, a sub-picosecond lifetime of the photocarriers results in a substantial loss of photoconductive gain and optical responsivity. In addition, growth of short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors in many cases relies on the use of rare elements and non-standard processes with limited accessibility. Therefore, there is a strong motivation to explore and develop alternative techniques for realizing terahertz photomixers that do not rely on these defect-introduced short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors. This review will provide an overview of several promising approaches to realize terahertz emitters and detectors without short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors. These novel approaches utilize p-i-n diode junctions, plasmonic nanostructures, ultrafast spintronics, and low-dimensional materials to offer ultrafast carrier response. These innovative directions have great potentials for extending the applicability and accessibility of the terahertz spectrum for a wide range of applications

    Comparative analysis of the sustainability and seismic performance of a social interest house using RC moment frames and bahareque as structural systems

    This study compares the seismic performance and environmental impact of a social housing structure designed with reinforced concrete with a structure using Guadua angustifolia “Kunth” cane. The aim is to contrast the implementation of an ecological material such as the Guadua cane, which is an accessible alternative due to its cost and construction time, versus the traditional reinforced concrete (RC) construction method. Both applied to social housing structures. The seismic performance of both methods is analyzed through nonlinear static analysis (pushover) with the objective of establishing the performance; structural and nonstructural damage, performance point, maximum displacements, and structural elements that induce structural failure; and acting forces, against a design earthquake (established by the NEC DS 2015 Standard), with a return period of 475 years. The environmental impact is evaluated through a life cycle assessment of the structure (LCA). Thus, the embodied carbon obtained from each structural element (foundations, beams, columns, floors, and roof support elements) was determined, considering material manufacturing, transportation, and construction. The results obtained demonstrated a higher seismic performance, with 70% less environmental impact on the Guadua cane structure

    Fecundity of three species of Penaeid shrimps, Penaeus monodon (Fabricius, 1798), Penaeus indicus (H. Milne-Edwards, 1837) and Penaeus japonicus (Bate, 1888) of Karachi coast, Pakistan

    In order to define the period of maturity of penaeid shrimps at least three indices (fecundity, size structure and density of mature females) are required. During the present study the relationships between fecundity and total length, carapace length, ovary length, body weight and ovary weight of three species of Penaeid shrimps, Penaeus (Fenneropenaeus) indicus, Penaeus (Marsupenaeus) japonicus and Penaeus (Penaeus) monodon were found out. Samples of shrimps were collected from fish market, identified to the species level, morphometric measurements of each individual were recorded and the fecundity of each developed shrimp was estimated. The relationship between body weight and fecundity and between body length and fecundity were linear in all three species. The result indicated positive strong correlation between total length (size) and fecundity in all three species. Positive strong correlations were observed between carapace length and the fecundity, ovary length and fecundity,body weight and fecundity and ovary weight and fecundity in P. indicus and P. monodon while Penaeus japonicus showed moderate positive correlations between all mentioned morphometric parameters and fecundity. There was a strong correlation between fecundity and body length in Penaeus japonicus (r =0.880), fecundity and ovary weight in Penaeus indicus (r = 0.943) and fecundity and carapace length in Penaeus monodon (r = 0.970). The estimated fecundity of Penaeus indicus varied between 989073.36 to 1380581.565 eggs for body length range 14.4 to 20.1 cm while that of Penaeus japonicus varied between 249602.2609 to 320026.71 eggs for length range 15.4 to 19.4 cm and fecundity of Penaeus monodon, with body length range 14.4 to 21.1 cm, varied between 221271.6 to 400296.288 eggs

    Quantification and Predictors of OCT-Based Macular Curvature and Dome-Shaped Configuration: Results From the UK Biobank

    PURPOSE. To investigate macular curvature, including the evaluation of potential associations and the dome-shaped macular configuration, given the increasing myopia prevalence and expected associated macular malformations. METHODS. The study included a total of 65, 440 subjects with a mean age (± SD) of 57.3 ± 8.11 years with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) data from a unique contemporary resource for the study of health and disease that recruited more than half a million people in the United Kingdom (UK Biobank). A deep learning model was used to segment the retinal pigment epithelium. The macular curvature of the OCT scans was calculated by polynomial fit and evaluated. Further, associations with demographic, functional, ocular, and infancy factors were examined. RESULTS. The overall macular curvature values followed a Gaussian distribution with high inter-eye agreement. Although all of the investigated parameters, except maternal smoking, were associated with the curvature in a multilinear analysis, ethnicity and refractive error consistently revealed the most significant effect. The prevalence of a macular dome-shaped configuration was 4.8% overall, most commonly in Chinese subjects as well as hypermetropic eyes. An increasing frequency up to 22.0% was found toward high refractive error. Subretinal fluid was rarely found in these eyes. CONCLUSIONS. Macular curvature revealed associations with demographic, functional, ocular, and infancy factors, as well as increasing prevalence of a dome-shaped macular configuration in high refractive error including high myopia and hypermetropia. These findings imply different pathophysiologic processes that lead to macular development and might open new fields to future myopia and macula research

    Dynamics of Collapse of flexible Polyelectrolytes and Polyampholytes

    We provide a theory for the dynamics of collapse of strongly charged polyelectrolytes (PEs) and flexible polyampholytes (PAs) using Langevin equation. After the initial stage, in which counterions condense onto PE, the mechanism of approach to the globular state is similar for PE and PA. In both instances, metastable pearl-necklace structures form in characteristic time scale that is proportional to N^{4/5} where N is the number of monomers. The late stage of collapse occurs by merger of clusters with the largest one growing at the expense of smaller ones (Lifshitz- Slyozov mechanism). The time scale for this process T_{COLL} N.     Foveal Curvature and Its Associations in UK Biobank Participants

    PURPOSE. To examine whether sociodemographic, and ocular factors relate to optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived foveal curvature (FC) in healthy individuals. METHODS. We developed a deep learning model to quantify OCT-derived FC from 63, 939 participants (age range, 39-70 years). Associations of FC with sociodemographic, and ocular factors were obtained using multilevel regression analysis (to allow for right and left eyes) adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, height (model 1), visual acuity, spherical equivalent, corneal astigmatism, center point retinal thickness (CPRT), intraocular pressure (model 2), deprivation (Townsend index), higher education, annual income, and birth order (model 3). Fovea curvature was modeled as a z-score. RESULTS. Males had on average steeper FC (0.077; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.077-0.078) than females (0.068; 95% CI 0.068-0.069). Compared with whites, non-white individuals showed flatter FC, particularly those of black ethnicity. In black males, -0.80 standard deviation (SD) change when compared with whites (95% CI -0.89, -0.71; P 5.2e10-68). In black females, -0.70 SD change when compared with whites (95% CI -0.77, -0.63; p 2.3e10-93). Ocular factors (visual acuity, refractive status, and CPRT) showed a graded inverse association with FC that persisted after adjustment. Macular curvature showed a positive association with FC. Income showed a linear trend increase in males (P for linear trend = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS. We demonstrate marked differences in FC with ethnicity on the largest cohort studied for this purpose to date. Ocular factors showed a graded association with FC. Implementation of FC quantification in research and on the clinical setting can enhance the understanding of clinical macular phenotypes in health and disease
