The global seafood industry currently lacks a standardized, widespread method to easily trace the chain of custody of products that they purchase. With global overfishing leading to declining fish stocks around the world, it is vital for seafood providers to have the ability to identify and buy products from sustainable fisheries that are well managed, target abundant species, and fish in environmentally responsible ways. This paper analyzes public and private initiatives that seek to provide product traceability. In summarizing the current status of seafood traceability, stakeholders agree that are a number of challenges with trying to piece together so many records from so many different supply chain members between international trade partners and the United States. Currently, investigators can follow the paths of seafood products until they (hopefully) find the point where these paths cross. While the process might seem straightforward, it is not. Regarding traceability implementation, there is also great concern in the market about a level playing field - why should one supplier make an investment for the sake of traceability or sustainability when it means that a competitor can sell the same product at a lower price

A Sustainable Seafood Traceability System in Costa Rica: Development and Implementation

A tracing system that incorporates a combination of online inventory reporting and physical product tagging, augmented by independent supply chain verification, will give companies and consumers the information they need to make sustainable seafood choices. Overfishing is costly. Altered fish landings have created economic hardships for fishermen and women worldwide. In addition, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) catches threaten the sustainability of many sensitive local fisheries. Increased tracing of seafood products has the potential to help alleviate these problems by giving suppliers and consumers relevant information that allows them to make sustainable choices. The primary goals of the initial phase of this project are the development of a gap analysis in the current fishing industry in Costa Rica (including fisheries management criteria) as well as of recommendations for moving forward toward implementing a test system for a pilot traceability project. During this phase, current procedures will be outlined and compared to existing traceability models, standards, and regulations in Costa Rica and the U.S. The ultimate goal of this project is to test the implementation of a seafood traceability system in Costa Rica (and perhaps Panama and Colombia) with practical experience, with real-life situations and challenges, and with a small number of participants at each step of the value chain (i.e., a small number of fishermen, a few processors, one or two distributors, and a large supermarket and/or restaurant chain)

Identification of Patients With Early Rheumatoid Arthritis: Challenges and Future Directions

    Get PDF
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis that affects the adult population. Early diagnosis and treatment are the cornerstones to prevent joint damage and avoid long-term costs and disability. This article reviews the limitations of the currently available tools for the evaluation of patients with early arthritis, including clinical assessment, serologic markers and imaging modalities. It also discusses gene expression analysis, a newer and potentially promising approach to the early diagnosis of RA

Serologic Evidence of H1 Swine Influenza Virus Infection in Swine Farm Residents and Employees

We evaluated seropositivity to swine and human H1 influenza viruses in 74 swine farm owners, employees, their family members, and veterinarians in rural south-central Wisconsin, compared with 114 urban Milwaukee, Wisconsin, residents. The number of swine farm participants with positive serum hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibody titers >40 to swine influenza viruses (17/74) was significantly higher (p<0.001) than the number of seropositive urban control samples (1/114). The geometric mean serum HI antibody titers to swine influenza viruses were also significantly higher (p<0.001) among the farm participants. Swine virus seropositivity was significantly (p<0.05) associated with being a farm owner or a farm family member, living on a farm, or entering the swine barn >4 days/week. Because pigs can play a role in generating genetically novel influenza viruses, swine farmers may represent an important sentinel population to evaluate the emergence of new pandemic influenza viruses

A long-term retrospective study examined the effects of testosterone and/or GH supplementation on body composition and quality of life (QoL).Methods: A database survey assessed the records of 91 men and 97 women (ages 25–82) in treatment groups based on their hormonal status: dehydroepiandrosterone but no hormonal supplementation (control); testosterone only (Tes); GH only (GH); and testosterone plus GH (Tes+GH). Pre- and post-treatment assessments recorded changes in fat and lean mass, BMD, and QoL.Results: After an average of 3 years of treatment, weight decreased in women in the control and Tes+GH groups but remained stable in men in all groups. Tes and Tes+GH produced statistically significant increases in lean mass, reductions in fat mass, and improvements in BMD in both sexes; GH produced similar changes in women. QoL and mood improved in all groups. Treatments were generally safe and well tolerated. Conclusions: In this retrospective survey, treatment with testosterone and/or GH was associated with favorable effects in men and women across a wide age range. Keywords: testosterone, growth hormone, body composition, quality of lif

An absorbent article, such as a sanitary napkin is provided. The sanitary napkin of the present invention has at least one component facing the body surface of the sanitary napkin having a window cut out therein. The sanitary napkin is provided with an acquisition/distribution component such as a tow of resilient fibers having intra-fiber capillary channels. The tow of resilient fibers is positioned so that it at least partially lies in the space defined by the window. The acquisition/distribution component has a compressed configuration and an uncompressed configuration. In its uncompressed configuration, the acquisition/distribution component lies relatively flat behind the window. In its compressed configuration, the acquisition/distribution component forms a hump on the body surface that protrudes from the window

Prediction of Disease Severity in Patients with Early Rheumatoid Arthritis by Gene Expression Profiling

In order to test the ability of peripheral blood gene expression profiles to predict future disease severity in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a group of 17 patients (1 ± 0.2 years disease duration) was evaluated at baseline for gene expression profiles. Disease status was evaluated after a mean of 5 years using an index combining pain, global and recoded MHAQ scores. Unsupervised and supervised algorithms identified “predictor genes” whose combined expression levels correlated with follow-up disease severity scores. Unsupervised clustering algorithms separated patients into two branches. The only significant difference between these two groups was the disease severity score; demographic variables and medication usage were not different. Supervised T-Test analysis identified 19 “predictor genes” of future disease severity. Results were validated in an independent cohort of subjects of established RA with using Support Vector Machines and K-Nearest-Neighbor Classification. Our study demonstrates that peripheral blood gene expression profiles may be a useful tool to predict future disease severity in patients with early and established RA

Purpose To provide guidelines for patient recall regimen, professional maintenance regimen, and at-home maintenance regimen for patients with tooth-borne and implant-borne removable and fixed restorations. Materials and Methods The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) convened a scientific panel of experts appointed by the ACP, American Dental Association (ADA), Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) who critically evaluated and debated recently published findings from two systematic reviews on this topic. The major outcomes and consequences considered during formulation of the clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) were risk for failure of tooth- and implant-borne restorations. The panel conducted a round table discussion of the proposed guidelines, which were debated in detail. Feedback was used to supplement and refine the proposed guidelines, and consensus was attained. Results A set of CPGs was developed for tooth-borne restorations and implant-borne restorations. Each CPG comprised (1) patient recall, (2) professional maintenance, and (3) at-home maintenance. For tooth-borne restorations, the professional maintenance and at-home maintenance CPGs were subdivided for removable and fixed restorations. For implant-borne restorations, the professional maintenance CPGs were subdivided for removable and fixed restorations and further divided into biological maintenance and mechanical maintenance for each type of restoration. The at-home maintenance CPGs were subdivided for removable and fixed restorations. Conclusions The clinical practice guidelines presented in this document were initially developed using the two systematic reviews. Additional guidelines were developed using expert opinion and consensus, which included discussion of the best clinical practices, clinical feasibility, and risk-benefit ratio to the patient. To the authors’ knowledge, these are the first CPGs addressing patient recall regimen, professional maintenance regimen, and at-home maintenance regimen for patients with tooth-borne and implant-borne restorations. This document serves as a baseline with the expectation of future modifications when additional evidence becomes available
