Time, Memory, and Consciousness in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and Between the Acts

In Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, Clarissa Dalloway emerges as a character gripped by the notion and passage of time. Woolf represents the chronological aspect of time through images such as Big Ben and its relentless chimes as well as the various references to clocks or bells throughout the novel. To the Lighthouse also thematically and narratively explores constructions of time, particularly by focusing on elements such as inaction and delay. The journey to the Lighthouse, for example, does not occur until the end of the novel. Both texts underscore the tension between the linear timeframe of the novel and the narrative elements that delay the action of the story. A similar pattern appears in Woolf’s last novel, Between the Acts—and although antithetical to Mrs. Dalloway—also depicts various modes of time through the juxtaposition of the historical pageant play and the consciousness of the characters and audience. The notion of time—and indeed, the temporal experiences of the characters—is woven into the consciousness of the characters in each of the novels. In various instances, representations of time summon memories or associations with the past, present, or future. Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and Between the Acts, intersect at moments where modes of time or memory expose the character’s consciousness and it is through this intersection that Woolf underscores the manner in which the narratives take on meaning

Towards a Smart Services Enabling Information Architecture for Installed Base Management in Manufacturing

    Get PDF
In the manufacturing industry the provision of smart services is an opportunity to gain a competitive advantage. As there are high demands on machine availability, smart services in the field of installed base management are important. Through integrating condition monitoring data with installed base data a digital twin of the installed base can be created. This enables comprehensive analyses and the provision of individualized smart services. But this requires to structure and standardize the data. Following the action design research (ADR) approach, in this article design principles of an information architecture are developed. The architecture is evaluated and improved in the context of an international engineering and manufacturing company. A test run with real machine data shows the applicability in practice

Product-service systems (PSS) are seen as the 21st-century solution for direct delivery of value to customers under the requirements of high availability, quality, and reduced risks. With mutual benefits for customers, manufacturers, service providers and often the environment, PSS represent a promising approach to sustainable development. This paper addresses the integrated development of product-service systems consisting of physical products/systems and services and proposes an integrated modeling framework that utilizes the Systems Modeling Language. A use case from Lenze, a German automation company, demonstrates the applicability of the integrated modeling framework in practice

Predictive maintenance as an internet of things enabled business model : A taxonomy

    Get PDF
Predictive maintenance (PdM) is an important application of the Internet of Things (IoT) discussed in many companies, especially in the manufacturing industry. PdM uses data, usually sensor data, to optimize maintenance activities. We develop a taxonomy to classify PdM business models that enables a comparison and analysis of such models. We use our taxonomy to classify the business models of 113 companies. Based on this classification, we identify six archetypes using cluster analysis and discuss the results. The “hardware development”, “analytics provider”, and “all-in-one” archetypes are the most frequently represented in the study sample. For cluster analysis, we use a visualization technique that involves an autoencoder. The results of our analysis will help practitioners assess their own business models and those of other companies. Business models can be better differentiated by considering the different levels of IoT architecture, which is also an important implication for further research. © 2020, The Author(s)

Mazama gouazoubira is a small-sized deer, which can be found in South America, from southern Uruguay to the north of Mato Grosso, Brazil. This study aimed to describe the fetal membranes and placenta of M. gouazoubira in the first third of pregnancy. Samples collected were macroscopically and microscopically analyzed. Uterus examination demonstrated univitelinic gestation with an embryo measuring a crown-rump length of 13mm. In the embryo analysis we could identify the pigmented eye, auricular hillocks, mesonephron and early metanephron, liver and its external prominence, stomach, thoracic members and buds of pelvic members. Placenta was oligocotyledonary and nine caruncles were found in the uterus. Gestational sac measured 15cm in length, and, as observed in the early gestation of domestic ruminants, cotyledons could not be identified macroscopically. A weak adhesion was found between caruncles and chorioallantoic membrane (cotyledons) forming the placentomes. The chorioallantoic membrane showed a well-vascularized allantoid composed by a thin layer of cells with stretched nucleus and cytoplasm. On the other side of the membrane, the chorion was composed by cubic cells with scant cytoplasm and large-rounded nuclei, features of trophoblast cells. Involving the embryo we identified a two-layered amniotic sac. Layers could be mechanically separated and had similar morphology, showing a non-vascularized squamous epithelium. There was no yolk sac in the gestational stage of this specimen. We concluded that the placenta of M. gouazoubira is an oligocotyledonary placenta, as observed in others cervids, and that the fetal membranes showed similarities with those from other domestic ruminants, including cytological characteristics. Further studies are required in order to determine the presence of the yolk sac and its regression time
