Counting Black Holes: The Cosmic Stellar Remnant Population and Implications for LIGO
We present an empirical approach for interpreting gravitational wave signals
of binary black hole mergers under the assumption that the underlying black
hole population is sourced by remnants of stellar evolution. Using the observed
relationship between galaxy mass and stellar metallicity, we predict the black
hole count as a function of galaxy stellar mass. We show, for example, that a
galaxy like the Milky Way should host millions of black holes
and dwarf satellite galaxies like Draco should host such remnants,
with weak dependence on the assumed IMF and stellar evolution model. Most
low-mass black holes () typically reside within massive
galaxies () while massive black holes () typically reside within dwarf galaxies () today. If roughly of black holes are involved in a binary black
hole merger, then the reported merger rate densities from Advanced LIGO can be
accommodated for a range of merger timescales, and the detection of mergers
with black holes should be expected within the next decade.
Identifying the host galaxy population of the mergers provides a way to
constrain both the binary neutron star or black hole formation efficiencies and
the merger timescale distributions; these events would be primarily localized
in dwarf galaxies if the merger timescale is short compared to the age of the
universe and in massive galaxies otherwise. As more mergers are detected, the
prospect of identifying the host galaxy population, either directly through the
detection of electromagnetic counterparts of binary neutron star mergers or
indirectly through the anisotropy of the events, will become a realistic

Trial-Attitude Formation in Green Product Evaluations
How do merchandising and trial affect consumer responses to green products? To respond to this question, the authors use expectancy-value theory as a conceptual framework and evaluate the product-trial attitude formation process for environmentally friendly products in two experimental studies. The results show that addressing quality concerns and segmenting customers based on their environmental values may help increase adoption and positive word-of-mouth surrounding environmentally friendly products. Further, hands-on trials and exclusive communications and displays may help overcome explicit beliefs about poor green product quality and increase green product adoption intentions
Prion-like domains as epigenetic regulators, scaffolds for subcellular organization, and drivers of neurodegenerative disease
Key challenges faced by all cells include how to spatiotemporally organize complex biochemistry and how to respond to environmental fluctuations. The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae harnesses alternative protein folding mediated by yeast prion domains (PrDs) for rapid evolution of new traits in response to environmental stress. Increasingly, it is appreciated that low complexity domains similar in amino acid composition to yeast PrDs (prion-like domains; PrLDs) found in metazoa have a prominent role in subcellular cytoplasmic organization, especially in relation to RNA homeostasis. In this review, we highlight recent advances in our understanding of the role of prions in enabling rapid adaptation to environmental stress in yeast. We also present the complete list of human proteins with PrLDs and discuss the prevalence of the PrLD in nucleic-acid binding proteins that are often connected to neurodegenerative disease, including: ataxin 1, ataxin 2, FUS, TDP-43, TAF15, EWSR1, hnRNPA1, and hnRNPA2. Recent paradigm-shifting advances establish that PrLDs undergo phase transitions to liquid states, which contribute to the structure and biophysics of diverse membraneless organelles. This structural functionality of PrLDs, however, simultaneously increases their propensity for deleterious protein-misfolding events that drive neurodegenerative disease. We suggest that even these PrLD-misfolding events are not irreversible and can be mitigated by natural or engineered protein disaggregases, which could have important therapeutic applications. Automatic annotation of context and speech acts for dialogue corpora
Richly annotated dialogue corpora are essential for new research directions in statistical learning approaches to dialogue management, context-sensitive interpretation, and context-sensitive speech recognition. In particular, large dialogue corpora annotated with contextual information and speech acts are urgently required. We explore how existing dialogue corpora (usually consisting of utterance transcriptions) can be automatically processed to yield new corpora where dialogue context and speech acts are accurately represented. We present a conceptual and computational framework for generating such corpora. As an example, we present and evaluate an automatic annotation system which builds ‘Information State Update' (ISU) representations of dialogue context for the Communicator (2000 and 2001) corpora of human-machine dialogues (2,331 dialogues). The purposes of this annotation are to generate corpora for reinforcement learning of dialogue policies, for building user simulations, for evaluating different dialogue strategies against a baseline, and for training models for context-dependent interpretation and speech recognition. The automatic annotation system parses system and user utterances into speech acts and builds up sequences of dialogue context representations using an ISU dialogue manager. We present the architecture of the automatic annotation system and a detailed example to illustrate how the system components interact to produce the annotations. We also evaluate the annotations, with respect to the task completion metrics of the original corpus and in comparison to hand-annotated data and annotations produced by a baseline automatic system. The automatic annotations perform well and largely outperform the baseline automatic annotations in all measures. Adult life stage and crisis as predictors of curiosity and authenticity: Testing inferences from Eriksons lifespan theory
During periods of developmental crisis, individuals experience uncomfortable internal incongruence and are motivated to reduce this through forms of exploration of self, other and world. From this, we inferred that crisis would relate positively to curiosity and negatively to a felt sense of authenticity. A quasi-experimental design using self-report data from a nationally representative UK sample (N = 963) of adults in early life (20-39 yrs.), midlife (40-59 yrs.) and later-life (60+) showed a pattern of findings supportive of the hypotheses. Three forms of curiosity (intrapersonal, perceptual and epistemic D-type) were significantly higher, while authenticity was lower, among those currently in crisis that those of the same age group not in crisis. Crisis was also related to curiosity about particular book genres; early adult crisis to self-help and spirituality, midlife to self-help and biography, and later life to food and eating
