Buscamos, por meio dessas an?lises,
testemunhos.
It is well-known that documents handwritten in the past ? which are retrieved by philology
work ? are essential to the analysis of the presence (or the absence) of occurrences of long-term
language change. The purpose of this work is systematize, analyze and compare the
abbreviations present in the testimonies of the will of King Dom Pedro II, written in 1704 by
the hands of his friend and confessor, priest Sebasti?o de Magalh?es, and later transcribed in
1726, 1746 and 1967. The abbreviation system, as well as other linguistic phenomena, undergo
changes over time and, in order to understand it, it is necessary to study exhaustively the
documentary sources in which it is inserted. To achieve the desired results, the applied
methodology was based on a comparative study. Through these analyzes, we seek to cover the
philological and paleographic paths taken by these documents during their transmissions, with
the intention of understanding the norms and choices made by copyists concerning the use of
the abbreviation system throughout the publication of the testimonies. We conclude that,
possibly, until the edition of the 1746 testimony, the use of abbreviations in official Portuguese
documents followed the writing style and intellectual formation of the copyist; there were no
rules governing such choices. However, the 1967 document edition, as explained throughout
this dissertation, was based on norms which guided the use of abbreviated words

A concord?ncia vari?vel ? verbal e nominal ? ? um fen?meno bastante atual no PB, conforme
demonstram as pesquisas j? realizadas. Neste artigo, nosso objetivo ? apresentar e discutir a
Variable verbal and nominal agreement is an extremely current phenomenon in Brazilian
Portuguese, according to already accomplished works. In this paper, we aim at presenting and
discussing the occurrence of this form of agreement in manuscript documents from the state
of Minas Gerais, Brazil, written during the colonial period. The collected data show that
variable agreement during this old period of Portuguese language is not random, in the same
way it occurs in the current synchrony, but rather motivated by syntactic and morphophonemic
factors
