HIV-associated progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. Current perspectives
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, caused by the polyomavirus JC and occurring almost exclusively in the context of severe immune depression. AIDS represents the most common predisposing condition for PML development. Antiretroviral treatment has reduced PML incidence in HIV-infected subjects, but the disease remains a severe and life-threatening complication of AIDS, considering thus far the lack of an effective anti-JC virus (JCV) direct-acting antiviral drug. In the last decade, the use of monoclonal antibodies for treating immune-based diseases evidenced new predisposing conditions for PML development, promoting a renewed interest in PML pathogenesis. In this article, we review the current knowledge on JCV epidemiology and AIDS-associated PML incidence, JCV viral cycle, pathogenesis, and the interplay with HIV infection. We give an updated overview of diagnostic and prognostic tools available for PML diagnosis and describe past and current therapeutic approaches, including new strategies for PML cure
Near-infrared K-band Spectroscopic Investigation of Seyfert 2 Nuclei in the CfA and 12 Micron Samples
We present near-infrared K-band slit spectra of the nuclei of 25 Seyfert 2
galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. The strength of the CO absorption
features at 2.3-2.4 micron produced by stars is measured in terms of a
spectroscopic CO index. A clear anti-correlation between the observed CO index
and the nuclear K-L color is present, suggesting that a featureless hot dust
continuum heated by an AGN contributes significantly to the observed K-band
fluxes in the nuclei of Seyfert 2 galaxies. After correction for this AGN
contribution, we estimate nuclear stellar K-band luminosities for all sources,
and CO indices for sources with modestly large observed CO indices. The
corrected CO indices for 10 (=40%) Seyfert 2 nuclei are found to be as high as
those observed in star-forming or elliptical (=spheroidal) galaxies. We combine
the K-band data with measurements of the L-band 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature, another powerful indicator for
star-formation, and find that the 3.3 micron PAH to K-band stellar luminosity
ratios are substantially smaller than those of starburst galaxies. Our results
suggest that the 3.3 micron PAH emission originates in the putative nuclear
starbursts in the dusty tori surrounding the AGNs, because of its high surface
brightness, whereas the K-band CO absorption features detected at the nuclei
are dominated by old bulge (=spheroid) stars, and thus may not be a powerful
indicator for the nuclear starbursts. We see no clear difference in the
strength of the CO absorption and PAH emission features between the CfA and 12

Mid-Infrared line diagnostics of Active Galaxies -- A spectroscopic AGN survey with ISO-SWS
We present medium resolution (R approx. 1500) ISO-SWS 2.4--45 micron spectra
of a sample of 29 galaxies with active nuclei. This data set is rich in fine
structure emission lines tracing the narrow line regions and (circum-)nuclear
star formation regions, and it provides a coherent spectroscopic reference for
future extragalactic studies in the mid-infrared. We use the data set to
briefly discuss the physical conditions in the narrow line regions (density,
temperature, excitation, line profiles) and to test for possible differences
between AGN sub-types. Our main focus is on new tools for determining the
propertibes of dusty galaxies and on the AGN-starburst connection. We present
mid-IR line ratio diagrams which can be used to identify composite (starburst +
AGN) sources and to distinguish between emission excited by active nuclei and
emission from (circum-nuclear) star forming regions. For instance, line ratios
of high to low excitation lines like [O IV]25.9um/[Ne II]12.8um, that have been
used to probe for AGNs in dusty objects, can be examined in more detail and
with better statistics now. In addition, we present two-dimensional diagnostic
diagrams that are fully analogous to classical optical diagnostic diagrams, but
better suited for objects with high extinction. Finally, we discuss
correlations of mid-infrared line fluxes to the mid- and far-infrared
continuum. We compare these relations to similar relations in starburst
galaxies in order to examine the contribution of AGNs to the bolometric
luminosities of their host galaxies. The spectra are available in electronic
