    Television of the Republic of Tatarstan as an instrument of national identity

    The study of the role of regional television in national identification has gained particular relevance in the context of contemporary processes of mediatisation and globalisation. The theoretical significance of the results is related to the identification of the techniques of media identification in a historical perspective, as well as to the discovery of the factors influencing the identification process. The authors present the results of a study of both the historical experience of the development of state television in the territory of Tatarstan and the modern practice of the TV channel “Tatarstan - New Century”, which is currently considered the main national channel in the republic. The degree to which the topic of regional television development in Russia and around the world has been studied in terms of the specifics of national broadcasting, and studies which address the problem of ethnic identification through the media have been taken into account. A large body of empirical material was used to identify traditions and innovations in the activities of regional television, whose mission is to preserve and develop the native language, cultural and historical heritage. Through the analysis of empirical data the continuity of regional television traditions in relation to the national component is shown for the first time

    Engineering the Frequency Spectrum of Bright Squeezed Vacuum via Group Velocity Dispersion in an SU(1,1) Interferometer

    Bright squeezed vacuum, a promising tool for quantum information, can be generated by high-gain parametric down-conversion. However, its frequency and angular spectra are typically quite broad, which is undesirable for applications requiring single-mode radiation. We tailor the frequency spectrum of high-gain parametric down-conversion using an SU(1,1) interferometer consisting of two nonlinear crystals with a dispersive medium separating them. The dispersive medium allows us to select a narrow band of the frequency spectrum to be exponentially amplified by high-gain parametric amplification. The frequency spectrum is thereby narrowed from (56.5 +- 0.1) to (1.22 +- 0.02) THz and, in doing so, the number of frequency modes is reduced from approximately 50 to 1.82 +- 0.02. Moreover, this method provides control and flexibility over the spectrum of the generated light through the timing of the pump.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Natural Afforestation on Abandoned Agricultural Lands during Post-Soviet Period: A Comparative Landsat Data Analysis of Bordering Regions in Russia and Belarus

    Remote monitoring of natural afforestation processes on abandoned agricultural lands is crucial for assessments and predictions of forest cover dynamics, biodiversity, ecosystem functions and services. In this work, we built on the general approach of combining satellite and field data for forest mapping and developed a simple and robust method for afforestation dynamics assessment. This method is based on Landsat imagery and index-based thresholding and specifically targets suitability for limited field data. We demonstrated method’s details and performance by conducting a case study for two bordering districts of Rudnya (Smolensk region, Russia) and Liozno (Vitebsk region, Belarus). This study area was selected because of the striking differences in the development of the agrarian sectors of these countries during the post-Soviet period (1991-present day). We used Landsat data to generate a consistent time series of five-year cloud-free multispectral composite images for the 1985–2020 period via the Google Earth Engine. Three spectral indices, each specifically designed for either forest, water or bare soil identification, were used for forest cover and arable land mapping. Threshold values for indices classification were both determined and verified based on field data and additional samples obtained by visual interpretation of very high-resolution satellite imagery. The developed approach was applied over the full Landsat time series to quantify 35-year afforestation dynamics over the study area. About 32% of initial arable lands and grasslands in the Russian district were afforested by the end of considered period, while the agricultural lands in Belarus’ district decreased only by around 5%. Obtained results are in the good agreement with the previous studies dedicated to the agricultural lands abandonment in the Eastern Europe region. The proposed method could be further developed into a general universally applicable technique for forest cover mapping in different growing conditions at local and regional spatial levels

    The state of specific immunity of population of the Republic of Tajikistan to measles, rubella, poliomyelitis viruses

    Relevance. To achieve the goals of measles and rubella elimination and poliomyelitis eradication programs, immunization coverage of at least 95% of the target population is required. Objective data on the state of specific herd immunity are provided only by the results of serosurveys. In the Republic of Tajikistan, such monitoring is not carried out regularly. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to assess the actual state of the specific herd immunity to measles, rubella, and poliomyelitis viruses. Materials and methods. The blood sera of 563 children and adults collected in 7 cities and 13 districts of Tajikistan in 2020 were investigated. The level of antibodies (ABs) to measles and rubella viruses was determined using enzyme immunoassay. Test systems VectoKor-IgG (VECTOR-BEST, Russia) and Ecolab, Russia were used to determine ABs to measles and rubella virus, respectively. Neutralizing antibodies (nABs) to the 3 types of poliovirus (PV) were determined in 359 sera using a neutralization reaction with Sabin strains of types 1, 2, 3. Results. The conducted serosurvey showed the level of the specific herd immunity to rubella to be 87.9% in total population, including 86.2% in children, 93.1% in adolescents, and 93.5% and adults, that is sufficient to prevent transmission of the rubella virus. The proportion of individuals seropositive to measles was 54.5%, which is not enough to prevent sustained secondary transmission of infection and the resumption of circulation of the endemic strain of measles virus. The children under 15 years of age should be considered a population at risk of the infection, since children accounted for 38% among seronegative individuals. In general, less than 95% of the examined patients had nABs to PV: 94.4% to PV1, 86.1% to PV2, 83.6% to PV3; 3.3% did not have antibodies to all three types of PV. The level of herd immunity varied in the examined groups depending on the vaccination schedule and the composition of the poliovirus vaccines used: nABs to PV2 had 59.6% of children born during the period when vaccines containing PV2 were not used, and 85.7% of children born after the introduction of trivalent IPV. Deficiency in immunity to PV2 was the cause of a polio outbreak in 2021 caused by circulating vaccine-derived PV type 2. Conclusion. A high level of humoral immunity to the rubella virus was determined. Shortcomings of routine immunization against measles and polio associated with insufficient coverage and lack of IPV have been identified. Conducting regular serological monitoring in the Republic of Tajikistan is advisable to obtain objective information about the level of herd immunity, identify vulnerable groups of the population, and plan additional immunization activities

    The number of tree species on Earth

    One of the most fundamental questions in ecology is how many species inhabit the Earth. However, due to massive logistical and financial challenges and taxonomic difficulties connected to the species concept definition, the global numbers of species, including those of important and well-studied life forms such as trees, still remain largely unknown. Here, based on global groundsourced data, we estimate the total tree species richness at global, continental, and biome levels. Our results indicate that there are 73,000 tree species globally, among which ∼9,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America. Moreover, almost one-third of all tree species to be discovered may be rare, with very low populations and limited spatial distribution (likely in remote tropical lowlands and mountains). These findings highlight the vulnerability of global forest biodiversity to anthropogenic changes in land use and climate, which disproportionately threaten rare species and thus, global tree richness
