This paper examined the implications of the concept of conflict resolution which male and female residents of Gombe town have on peace and stability.  In attempt to provide solution to the problem raised by the topic, an instrument was designed that consists of twelve items.  One hundred and fifty residents of Gombe were served the instrument to which they responded.  Seventy five of them were males and seventy five were female.  Their responses were subjected to t-test analysis. Generally, there was no significant difference in the way they think of conflict resolution.  However, on examination of each of the responses using their mean scores to determine how they rank the items, differences were observed.  Based on this analysis, five implications were drawn out.  Recommendations were made at the end of the paper.   Keywords: Implications, Gender Disparity, Concepts, Conflict Resolution, Peace and Stabilit

Spiritual Content of Yoruba Concept of Sexuality and Sustenance of Family Values through Eko - Ile (Home Training)

This paper examined the spiritual content of the Yoruba concept of sexuality and the implications it has for the sustenance of family values by use of eko ile (home training) which parents are expected to provide for their children as they prepare them for good citizenship.  It is observed that most complaints about bad behaviours of young people in the contemporary African society are blamed on the lack of this cherished aspect of parenting.  Inability to provide this training either because the parents do not have it or that the challenges of the time make it impossible for them to do so has resulted into a degeneration of family values in the society and almost every aspect of life; spiritual, social and moral.   Traditional values and cultural norms are slowly but steadily phasing out with an alternative that permits lose control in family and community structure. The paper therefore recommends for parents to have a rethink and retrace their steps to forestall further degeneration by practicing and teaching their children eko ile that assign responsibilities with sexuality in view for the total development of society. The paper attempts to provide answers to the question; what could be the possible educational approach to resolving the dilemma of integrating an emerging generation of stigmatized and unwelcomed citizens into the Nigerian society.  These citizens are the children who emerged out of the forced sexual relationship which Boko Haram fighters had with women and girls they captured.  To solve the problem of the study, an instrument was designed and subjected to a test and re-test method of affirming reliability of instrument and a result of 6.98 was obtained which indicates its being reliable.  One hundred and twenty citizens were randomly selected in Ogbomoso city to serve as respondents and their responses were subjected to statistical analysis; the mean scores were used to rank responses. Results show respondents believe that these group of children needs prayers most; this result has a mean score of 3.37; but they also constitute danger to society, a response that had 3.33 mean score.  The biggest challenge which these children may be exposed to is the fear by society that they will take after their father-murderers and become stigmatized. Both items had 3.50 and 3.47 mean scores respectively.  With regard to the challenges that these children and their mothers can pose to the society; unlearning their bitter experiences and assisting them to heal their wounds of molestation had the highest mean scores.  The items scored 3.83 and 3.67 respectively. The paper recommends a programme of Identification and record keeping of Boko Haram children; development of an education curriculum for persons that emerged in circumstances peculiar with Boko Haram experiences; monitoring and mentoring for the children and their mothers. Keywords: Educational approach, Resolving, Dilemma, Emerging Generation, Stigmatized Unwelcomed Citizens.

The problem which this paper discussed is that of possible reasons why the different Nigerian educational systems introduced has not been functional at the different levels.  The result of each system that has been introduced is failure in realizing the objectives and expectations of its introduction.  In most of the instances blame for failure has been attributed to bad implementation.  But beyond the factor of implementation this paper highlighted at least five constraining factors which if not corrected may not allow any educational system introduced to become functional. The paper also pointed to four issues that constitute the bane of policy enactments by operatives of the Nigerian Governments at different levels of governance.  Recommendations were suggested at the end of the paper. Get PDF
This study investigated Physics teachers’ assessment of the implementation of senior school physics curriculum in Osun State, Nigeria. It examined the influence of their qualifications and experience on their assessment. The teachers were sampled from the 30 local governments in the state; 125 physics teachers were sampled with at least four physics teachers from each local government in Osun state. The instrument for the study was researcher-designed Teachers’ Assessment Questionnaire (TAQ) which consisted of 40 items to assess Nature, Objectives and Content of the Senior School Physics Curriculum. The items also assessed the instructional materials and instructional personnel available for the implementation of the Curriculum. The items were on 4point likert-type scale. Strongly agree (SA) +2, Agree (A) +1, Disagree (D) -1 and Strongly disagree (SD) -2. Two major research hypotheses were formulated and tested using t-test statistical analysis. Findings from the study showed that; there was no significant difference in teachers’ assessment of nature of physics based on teachers’ qualifications and experience; there was no significant difference in the assessment of content of physics curriculum based on teachers’ experience and qualifications but there was a significant difference in their assessment of the Objectives based on experience and qualifications. Also, no significant difference existed in the assessment of instructional materials available for the implementation of the Curriculum based on their experience and qualifications. There was a significant difference in their assessment of instructional personnel based on their qualification, but no significant difference existed based on their experience. It was therefore recommended that difficult and abstract contents of the physics curriculum be reviewed and every physics teacher should have access to physics curriculum for effective implementation of the stated objectives. CAUSES AND PANACEA TO PROBLEM OF CULTISM IN THE NIGERIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

    Get PDF
The Nigerian education system is bedeviled with a myriad of malaise, hampering effective teaching and pleasant learning, chief among which is cultism. The overall effect of cultism leaves much to be desired in the education system, as education is an instrument par excellence for achieving national development. The trust of this paper, therefore, is to investigate the crushing effect of cultism, on the Nigerian education system. The paper traces antecedents of cultism; its pervasiveness at particular level(s) of the education system; causes of cultism; as well as panacea to the cankerworm, with a view to salvaging the Nigerian education system and making it the bastion of development, as affirmed by the National Policy on Education, which considers education as an instrument par excellence for national development. Among other things, the paper proffers panacea in form of recommendations which include mass re-orientation against violence in Nigerian schools, emphasising moral and religious teaching; provision of welfare/recreational facilities in-school(s); as well as enacting and enforcing stricter laws, among other measures.  Article visualizations

Computation of River Discharge from Formulated Rating Equation in Hydrological Catchments with Inadequate Data: River Omi, South Western Nigeria, as Case Study

    Get PDF
River discharge is an important hydrological parameter in any water resources management. Most rivers in Nigeria, with sizeable catchment areas, are poorly gauged and are noted to have histories of frequent flooding experience. Since Stage or Gauge, which is the height of water surface at a relative datum, can be easily measured, it is possible to formulate a rating equation which can predict discharge with a known gauge-depth. This Paper develops a mathematical relationship between gauge heights and discharge, using River Omi, South Western Nigeria, as a case study. Series of gauge-discharge relationships were established on River Omi from measured values and past records. The water velocities were measured using ultrasonic current meter and geometrical parameters were measured at the gauging station. The stage-discharge relationship, over a period of time, was plotted and a rating equation generated. The generated rating equation: Q = 0.1828*(G-0.14)0.78, has a coefficient of regression of 97%. The formulated equation was calibrated and validated with discharge data obtained from 2007 to 2012. The rating equation performed better at depth below 0.6 m with less than 1% variation between the simulated and measured discharge. This formulated equation can be adapted to other river catchments with similar hydrological characteristics. It should be noted that below gauging depth of 0.14 m, the rating equation cannot be used. A Comparative Analysis of Women Candidatures and Outcomes in the 2011 and 2015 Nigeria General Elections

    Get PDF
One noticeable development in the Nigeria’s 2015 general elections is the differentials in the numbers and outcomes of women involvement as candidates in comparison to the 2011 elections. The percentage of women contesting for presidential position decline from 12.5% in 2011 to 7.1% in 2015. That of the gubernatorial election also witnessed a reduction from 10.2% in 2011 to 7.1% in 2015, while the percentage of women for deputy governorship positions was relatively stable with only an increase of 0.4%. However, there was a double increment in the contestations for Senatorial posts from 10.3% in 2011 to 22.2% in 2015. Also, the number of women candidacy into the House of Representative and State Houses of Assembly recorded an increase of 5.7% and 5.6% respectively. However, when it comes to actual successes at the polls, the outcomes were not encouraging. With the exemption of deputy governorship number that improved from 2.8% in 2011 to 13.8% in 2015, all others witnessed a sharp decline. While Presidential and Governorship numbers returned nil percentages, there were shortfalls of 1.8% and 2.5% of women elected into the Senate and the House of Representatives respectively. Given the presence of 35% affirmative action and incentives introduced by various parties, some questions arise: Why do the positive changes refused to come? What does this say about the Nigerian society?......
