Balance disorders affect social, family and professional activities. Vestibular rehabilitation can reduce the impact of these disorders on the quality of life of individuals with vertigo. AIM: to study the influence of vestibular rehabilitation on the quality of life of individuals, correlating it with gender, age, results from computerized vectoelectronystagmography and vertigo. Study type: Retrospective. MATERIALS AND METHODS:Twenty-two individuals were submitted to customized vestibular rehabilitation and the Brazilian Dizziness Handicap Inventory - DHI before and after vestibular rehabilitation. Results from this questionnaire were correlated with gender, age, vestibular assessment and the presence of vertigo. RESULTS: all the DHI scores reduced significantly after vestibular rehabilitation. There were no differences among genders; adults and elderly patients; irritative peripheral vestibular syndromes; deficiency syndromes and normal exams; the presence or absence of vertigo. CONCLUSION: all the individuals had improvements in their quality of life after customized vestibular rehabilitation.Desordens do equilíbrio comprometem atividades sociais, familiares e profissionais.

Intralesional treatment of lymphatic malformations with emphasis on Picibanil (OK-432) sclerotherapy: a systematic review

INTRODUCTION: We performed a retrospective systematic review of studies reporting the use of Picibanil for treatment of lymphatic malformations (LMs). METHODS: We searched the PubMed database for available studies, including those published between January 1990 and April 14, 2013. The search strategy involved the use of the keywords "OK-432" or "Picibanil" and "lymphatic malformation." Information was compiled regarding the reported mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, efficacy, administration, side effects, complications, and advantages and disadvantages compared to those of other modalities. RESULTS: Forty-four studies were found, of which 27 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Picibanil is a lyophilized preparation of a low-virulence strain of Streptococcus pyogenes inactivated with penicillin G. Its mechanism of action is unclear, but it has been speculated that it causes a controlled inflammatory response with adhesion of cyst walls. Picibanil is almost unanimously indicated for the treatment of macrocystic LMs, which show a greater effectiveness response compared to that shown by microcystic or mixed LMs. Picibanil is usually administered by puncturing, either with direct visualization or guided by ultrasound, with the patient under general anesthesia. The most widely used preparation comprises 0.1 mg of Picibanil in 10 mL of saline. Side effects are mostly mild, with pain, swelling, and fever being the most frequently reported. CONCLUSION: The studies had low scientific evidence. A systematic review found that Picibanil is useful against any LM, with better results in macrocystic lesions. Efficacy was comparable to that of other therapies. No specific contraindication was presented. Although the mechanism of action has not been established, the inclusion of Picibanil as a treatment option is warranted

PURPOSE: To investigate the consistency of duration and reproducibility of the pattern of acoustical events related to the swallowing of individuals without complaints. METHODS: Participants were 88 women and 76 men with ages between 6 and 85 years. With a microphone attached to the neck and connected to a computer, each of them performed nine swallowings of saliva, of 5 ml of water, and of 10 ml of water. Based on the acoustic registration of the sounds recorded, the duration of the interval between the peaks of the two main swallowing clicks (T), of the swallowing apnea (dA), and of the relationship between them (T/dA). RESULTS: No differences were found regarding the mean duration between the peaks of the two swallowing clicks (T), the mean duration of the swallowing apnea (dA), and the relationship T/dA in the different age ranges and between genders, except for the T/dA index for the swallowing of 5 ml of water. There was no correlation between age and the measured parameters. CONCLUSION: The swallowing sounds present a characteristic reproducible pattern, which is distinct both from external noises and from other sounds produced in the cervical region. Therefore, they may be used in dysphagia evaluation methods.OBJETIVO: Investigar a consistência da duração e a reprodutibilidade do padrão dos eventos acústicos relacionados à deglutição de indivíduos sem queixa.
