Reversible Fluorination of Graphene: towards a Two-Dimensional Wide Bandgap Semiconductor
We report the synthesis and evidence of graphene fluoride, a two-dimensional
wide bandgap semiconductor derived from graphene. Graphene fluoride exhibits
hexagonal crystalline order and strongly insulating behavior with resistance
exceeding 10 G at room temperature. Electron transport in graphene
fluoride is well described by variable-range hopping in two dimensions due to
the presence of localized states in the band gap. Graphene obtained through the
reduction of graphene fluoride is highly conductive, exhibiting a resistivity
of less than 100 k at room temperature. Our approach provides a new
path to reversibly engineer the band structure and conductivity of graphene for
electronic and optical applications.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, revtex, to appear in PR
Levels of antibodies against babesia bigemina and babesia bovis in cows and calves by elisa using recombinant antigens.
Bovine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease that cause fever, anaemia, haemoglobinuria, and ataxia, consequently resulting in losses for the livestock industry. Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis are considered endemic in the region of this study
Immunohistochemical expression of SKALP/elafin in squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus.
In this study, the immunohistochemical expression of a new inducible elastase inhibitor, SKALP (skin-derived anti-leucoproteinase)/elafin, in the tissue of squamous cell carcinoma and uninvolved oesophageal mucosa was studied using a polyclonal rabbit anti-serum against SKALP/elafin. The results were compared with the immunohistochemical staining of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and the TUNEL assay in serial sections. In non-malignant oesophageal mucosa, the expression of SKALP/elafin was localized in the cells of the stratified zone overlying the PCNA-positive basal zone. In oesophageal cancer, the incidence of the expression was significantly related to the degree of the differentiation of the tumour. Characteristically, the expression was almost limited in tumour cell nests that had a clear squamous phenotype. In tumour cell nests, the expression of SKALP/elafin was localized in the cells overlying PCNA-expressing cells and no expression was found in the cells that expressed PCNA; DNA fragmentation was often observed in the same cell layers as those in which SKALP/elafin immunoreactivity was found. This enzyme inhibitor is speculated to be involved in the induction of the cell differentiation and apoptosis of human squamous cell carcinoma cells of the oesophagus
New Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (lamp) method for the rapid identification of anaplasma marginale.
Bovine anaplasmosis is an important tick-borne disease, which leads to significant economic losses in tropical and subtropical world areas. In this study, sets of the primers targeting the major surface protein 1 (msp1b) gene of Anaplasma marginale were designed and optimized for LAMP method
Use of molecular markers can help to understand the genetic diversity of Babesia bovis.
Cattle babesiosis is a tick-borne disease responsible for significant losses for the livestock industries in tropical areas of the world. These piroplasms are under constant control of the host immune system, which lead to a strong selective pressure for arising more virulent or attenuated phenotypes. Aiming to better understand the most critical genetic modifications in Babesia bovis genome, related to virulence, an in silico analysis was performed using DNA sequences from GenBank. Fourteen genes (sbp-2, sbp-4, trap, msa-1, msa-2b, msa-2c, Bv80 (or Bb-1), 18S rRNA, acs-1, ama-1, ?-tub, cp-2, p0, rap-1a) related to parasite infection and immunogenicity and ITS region were selected for alignment and comparison of several isolates of Babesia bovis from different geographic regions around the world. Among the 15 genes selected for the study of diversity, only 7 genes (sbp-2, sbp-4, trap, msa-1, msa-2b, msa-2c, Bv80) and the ITS region presented sufficient genetic variation for the studies of phylogeny. Despite this genetic diversity observed into groups, there was not sufficient information available to associate molecular markers with virulence of isolates. However, some genetic groups no were correlated with geographic region what could indicate some typical evolutionary characteristics in the relation between parasite-host. Further studies using these genes in herds presenting diverse clinical conditions are required. The better understanding of evolutionary mechanisms of the parasite may contribute to improve prophylactic and therapeutic measures. In this way, we suggest that genes used in our study are potential markers of virulence and attenuation and have to be analyzed with the use of sequences from animals that present clinical signs of babesiosis and asymptomatic carriers
Divergent humoral responses between males and females against 24 kDa excretory-secretory protein of Haemonchus contortus and influence of ovine B-globin polymorphism.
Lambs harboring the Hb-AA B-globin haplotype present improved cell-mediated responses and increased resistance against Haemonchus contortus infection. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of sex and B-globin haplotypes on specific humoral responses and phenotypes of resistance during H. contortus infection in Morada Nova sheep. As expected, females displayed stronger resistance during the first and second experimental challenges. Differential systemic humoral immune responses were observed comparing sex groups, in which higher levels of specific antibodies targeting 24 kDa excretory-secretory (ES24) protein of H. contortus of IgG and IgM antibodies were respectively observed as predominant isotypes in males and females. The IgM levels were significantly correlated with phenotypes of resistance, evaluated by packed cell volume and fecal egg counts. To our knowledge this is the first study reporting divergent humoral responses profiles to H. contortus infection between male and female sheep. The impact of β-globin haplotypes was less pronounced in females compared to males. Notably, only males showed significant weight differences across haplotypes, with Hb-AA lambs being the heaviest. Additionally, Hb-AA males had significantly higher PCV (indicating better red blood cell health) and lower FEC (indicating lower parasite burden). These findings suggest a more pronounced effect of B-globin polymorphisms on H. contortus infection in males, potentially due to their generally weaker resistance compared to females. This study highlights the importance of sex and B-globin haplotypes in shaping immune responses to H. contortus infection. Specifically, IgM antibodies targeting the ES24 protein appear to play a crucial role in host-parasite interactions and may hold promise for therapeutic development
