Analysis of the Drying Process of Granular and Powdered Materials During the Falling Rate Period

    Get PDF
The drying rate curves of granular and powdered materials for various drying methods are shown in Figs. 1~4. It is clear from these figures that the falling drying rate of granular material is proportional to the water content of the material. It is also shown that the temperature gradient can be neglected for the granular material which has a diameter below 2~3mm. According to these facts, we have discussed the relation between the water content and the material temperature during the falling rate period under stationary drying conditions in Chap. I. In Chap. II, we have discussed the relations among water content, material temperature and air temperature under non-stationary conditions which take place in a continuous (parallel- or counter-current flow) dryer. The drying rate and the drying time in the continuous adiabatic dryer can be easily calculated by using these relations. The application of this calculation to the dryer design is discussed in Chap. III

Recently, research and development of integrated low-voltage dc-dc converter to LSIs has been active. In order to realize such integrated dc power supply, power magnetic devices must be integrated in it. The authors have fabricated planar power inductor embedded in LSI package for hundreds megahertz switching dc-dc buck converter. In this study, two types of planar power inductors have been fabricated: one was spin-sprayed Zn-ferrite thick film magnetic core inductor, and the other was composite magnetic core (Fe-based amorphous/polyimide) inductor. Footprint of the fabricated inductors was 850 x 850 mu m(2), their inductance was about 10 nH, and the quality factor Q was about 20 at 100 MHz. The rating current which depends on the superimposed dc characteristic was at least up to 2 A.ArticleIEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MAGNETICS. 47(10):3204-3207 (2011)journal articl

Chronic Treatment with a Water-Soluble Extract from the Culture Medium of Ganoderma lucidum

Type 2 diabetes mellitus has been known to increase systemic oxidative stress by chronic hyperglycemia and visceral obesity and aggravate cerebral ischemic injury. On the basis of our previous study regarding a water-soluble extract from the culture medium of Ganoderma lucidum mycelia (designed as MAK), which exerts antioxidative and neuroprotective effects, the present study was conducted to evaluate the preventive effects of MAK on apoptosis and necroptosis (a programmed necrosis) induced by hypoxia/ischemia (H/I) in type 2 diabetic KKAy mice. H/I was induced by a combination of unilateral common carotid artery ligation with hypoxia (8% O2 for 20 min) and subsequent reoxygenation. Pretreatment with MAK (1 g/kg, p.o.) for a week significantly reduced H/I-induced neurological deficits and brain infarction volume assessed at 24 h of reoxygenation. Histochemical analysis showed that MAK significantly suppressed superoxide production, neuronal cell death, and vacuolation in the ischemic penumbra, which was accompanied by a decrease in the numbers of TUNEL- or cleaved caspase-3-positive cells. Furthermore, MAK decreased the expression of receptor-interacting protein kinase 3 mRNA and protein, a key molecule for necroptosis. These results suggest that MAK confers resistance to apoptotic and necroptotic cell death and relieves H/I-induced cerebral ischemic injury in type 2 diabetic mice

Impact of admission glycemia and glycosylated hemoglobin A1c on long-term clinical outcomes of non-diabetic patients with acute coronary syndrome

AbstractBackgroundAdmission glucose levels have proven to be a predictor in patients with acute myocardial infarction and elevated glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, even in patients without diabetes. However, the effect of both admission glucose and HbA1c levels on clinical outcomes in non-diabetic patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has not been fully elucidated. We evaluated the combined effect of admission glucose and HbA1c values on long-term clinical outcomes in non-diabetic patients with ACS treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).Methods and resultsThis was an observational study of 452 consecutive non-diabetic patients with ACS who underwent PCI between January 1997 and December 2006. The patients were assigned to four groups according to the median values of admission glucose and HbA1c. The primary endpoint comprising a composite of all-cause death and non-fatal MI was compared among the four groups. The primary endpoint occurred in 13.3% of the participants during a median follow-up period of 4.7 years. The cumulative incidence rate of primary endpoint significantly differed among the groups (p=0.048). Multivariable Cox regression analysis showed that the combination of elevated admission glucose and HbA1c was independently associated with long-term clinical outcomes.ConclusionsCombined admission glucose and HbA1c values were independently associated with clinical outcomes in non-diabetic patients with ACS treated with PCI

A Ruptured Distal Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Aneurysm Our Case and Review of the Literature

We present a case of ruptured distal posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysm, and review the literature and discuss the treatment strategy. A 77-year-old woman presented with the sudden onset of severe headache, nausea and vomiting. Computed tomography revealed an intraventricular hemorrhage, predominantly in the fourth ventricle and hydrocephalus with a thin subarachinoid hemorrhage (SAH). Angiography revealed an aneurysm arising at the turning point of the vessel, from the telovelotonsillar segment of the right PICA. On the 17 day after the onset, repeated angiography revealed a smaller aneurysm than the one detected on the first day at the same place and with no spasm. On the 22 day, the aneurysm was proved to be partially thrombosed and was safely clipped via a right lateral suboccipital approach. SAH with a fourth ventricular hemorrhage or an isolated fourth ventricle hemorrhage should raise the suspicion of a distal PICA aneurysm. Aneurysms of the distal PICA have often been reported to arise at a turning point of the artery rather than at a junction of the vessel. It is suggested that the pathogenesis could be hemodynamic stress that has developed due to embryological factors. Distal PICA aneurysms have often gone detected in many previous cases because of thrombosis inside the aneurysms. Thus, particularly in the case of intentionally delayed surgery, we recommend repeated angiography under various conditions to identify how the aneurysm develops just before surgery
