Study support for a junior high school student who has difficulty with solving graphic problems and word problems

This study is a case report of the cognitive counseling for a student who has difficulty with solving graphic and word problems. The student in this study was a boy of a junior high school first grader. He felt the difficulty in some arithmetic problems. He didn’t know how to solve graphic problems and word problems. He could solve computational problems fast, but he often made careless mistakes through the process of solving the problems. To reduce his troubles in arithmetic, we supported his learning based on three points. The first point, we explained to him formulas of figures to present figures made of paper. The second point, we supported his troubles in word problems by using charts to understand word problems. The third point, we tried to make his habits of review arithmetic problems after he finished them. This study, we could solve his troubles in graphic problems. However, we could not support enough having his strategy to solve word problems and making habits of review to reduce mistakes. He will master using charts with solving word problems and making habits of review when understanding the role of them in arithmetic problems

Muscle Fiber Composition Changes after Selective Nerve Innervation

Facial nerve paralysis interferes with mimetic muscle function. To reconstruct natural facial movement, free muscle flaps are transplanted as new muscles. However, it is difficult to maintain resting tonus. A dual innervation technique in which other nerves such as the hypoglossal nerve or contralateral facial nerve are added is often applied. Using 10-week-old rats (n = 10), the masseteric and hypoglossal nerves were cut, and the distal stump of the masseteric nerve and the proximal stump of the hypoglossal nerve were then sutured (suture group). In the other group, the masseteric nerve was cut and cauterized (cut group). Immunohistochemistry and microarray were performed on the extracted masseter muscle. The immunohistochemistry results suggested that the muscles in the suture group obtained oxidative characteristics. The microarray showed the genes involved in mitochondrial function, including Perm1. In summary, our data support the validity of the dualinnervation technique for facial paralysis treatment

Spirituality and Hansen’s Disease: Spirituality’ Conceptual Structure and Hansen’s Disease History - Part Two

There have been suicides at the Hansen’s disease sanatoria in the past. What is the level of suffering that makes a person think of suicide? Through the analysis of a Hansen’s disease survivor’s life, we clarified that the nature of sufferings is spiritual pain that is brought by the “loss of autonomy and independence for carving out my life.” The patient was stuck in a negative cycle for about 20 years: All my dreams and hopes cut off → Despair → I want to die but cannot die easily → Lethargy∙Desperation∙Nihilistic → Momentary pleasure by gambling → I do not feel like living → I ask myself why am I alive → Self-criticism → Repeat again. Recovery from spiritual pain was achieved with time and by reflection. The bellwethers led to a turning point that helped to change the flow of his life. He also started using time effectively. Spiritual well-being of aging survivors has a trilaminar structure, comprising the following: (1) establishing the existential foundation of a sustained self; (2) living in the moment while contemplating the future; and (3) dovetailing within the society and transcending space and time. It indicates that they can achieve the developmental tasks related to old age, personal integration containing spirituality, and the wisdom and strength to get over difficulties. Dangerous noodle: A case of swallowing syncope and a review of 122 cases from the literature.

Swallowing syncope is a rare medical condition. Even though it has been known as a neurally mediated syncope, the definitive mechanism of this condition remains unclear. We show in this study an additional case of swallowing syncope and review the 122 reported cases from the literature. A 47-year-old Japanese man had been suffering from recurrent syncopal attacks, when he fainted immediately after swallowing. Holter electrocardiogram monitoring demonstrated a sinus pause (maximum R-R interval of 3.8 seconds) after he swallowed a noodle quickly. A permanent pacemaker was implanted because the frequency of syncope increased

MYC-type transcription factors, MYC67 and MYC70, interact with ICE1 and negatively regulate cold tolerance in Arabidopsis

The expression of hundreds of genes is induced by low temperatures via a cold signaling pathway. ICE1, a MYC-type transcription factor, plays an important role in the induction of CBF3/DREB1A to control cold-responsive genes and cold tolerance. To elucidate other molecular factors, a yeast 2-hybrid screening was performed. Two MYC-type transcription factors, MYC67 and MYC70, were identified as ICE1-interacting proteins. The myc mutants were more tolerant to freezing temperatures than wild type. CBF3/DREB1A and other cold-responsive genes were up-regulated in the myc mutants. Overexpression of the MYC genes increased the cold sensitivity and down-regulated the expression of cold-responsive genes. The MYC proteins interacted with the cis-elements in the CBF3/DREB1A promoter, probably to interfere interaction between ICE1 and the cis-elements. Taken together, these results demonstrate that MYC67 and MYC70, ICE1 interactors, negatively regulate cold-responsive genes and cold tolerance

Clinicopathologic Analysis of Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma, with Focus on Human Papillomavirus Infection Status

Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) can recur; however, the factors related to tumor recurrence remain unclear. This study aimed to analyze risk factors, including human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, as well as other factors associated with SNIP recurrence. Thirty-two patients who were diagnosed with SNIP and underwent surgery between 2010 and 2019 were enrolled: 24 men and 8 women, with a mean age of 59.2 years. The mean follow-up was 57.3 months. Demographics and information about history of smoking, diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, allergic rhinitis, alcohol consumption, tumor stage, surgical approach, and recurrence were reviewed retrospectively. Specimens were investigated using polymerase chain reaction to detect HPV DNA (high-risk subtypes: 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 52b, and 58; low-risk subtypes: 6 and 11). Seven patients (21.9%) experienced recurrence. HPV DNA was detected in five (15.6%) patients (high-risk subtypes, n = 2; low-risk subtypes, n = 3). Patients with recurrence of SNIP had a higher proportion of young adults and displayed higher rates of HPV infection, DM, and advanced tumor stage than those without recurrence. HPV infection, young adulthood, DM, and advanced tumor stage could be associated with a high recurrence rate, which suggests that patients with these risk factors could require close follow-up after surgery
