The challenges facing solar power grid system in Africa is huge. Most salient of these challenges is the inefficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) panel to sustain its output for more than a year. Certainly, the harsh weather condition in the region can be said to be one of the reasons for the shortcoming that was earlier highlighted. In this research, bio-filters were suggested to filter the harmful radiation hitting the PV panel. The bio-filter is made up of copper coated hibiscus extract. The hibiscus extract was done using ethanol solution. It was observed that the bio-filter was able to filter the some of the harmful radiation as expected. The quantity of the harmful solar radiation was not estimated because of the limitations of the equipment used for the research. It is recommended that this highlighted shortcoming of the research should be taken further to ascertain i.e. in percentage the harmful radiation that has been filtered by the bio-filter during the experiment

Introducing Misoprostol for the Treatment of Incomplete Abortion in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Despite legal restriction, induced abortions and resulting complications are common in Nigeria. Misoprostol administration for incomplete abortion was introduced in 3 Nigerian hospitals. The feasibility of the hospitals, patient and provider acceptability were assessed using questionnaire and interview guides administered to 205 women and 17 providers respectively. Amongst the women, 194 (95%) were satisfied and very satisfied with misoprostol, 176 (86%) would choose misoprostol again if another incomplete abortion occurred and 191 (93%) would recommend it to another woman in a similar situation. Providers were highly satisfied with misoprostol. The ease of use and ability to redirect surgical resources to more complicated issues were positive features cited by them. The providers agreed that integration of misoprostol was straightforward and required few resources. Therefore, misoprostol for incomplete abortion is safe, efficacious and acceptable to providers and patients. In remote areas of Nigeria with limited post-abortion care (PAC), misoprostol administration is an important potential PAC treatment modality. Features of misoprostol-low cost, room temperature stability, and ease of introduction-render it an important treatment option, particularly in low resource and rural settings

    Thermohydrodynamics in Quantum Hall Systems

A theory of thermohydrodynamics in two-dimensional electron systems in quantizing magnetic fields is developed including a nonlinear transport regime. Spatio-temporal variations of the electron temperature and the chemical potential in the local equilibrium are described by the equations of conservation with the number and thermal-energy flux densities. A model of these flux densities due to hopping and drift processes is introduced for a random potential varying slowly compared to both the magnetic length and the phase coherence length. The flux measured in the standard transport experiment is derived and is used to define a transport component of the flux density. The equations of conservation can be written in terms of the transport component only. As an illustration, the theory is applied to the Ettingshausen effect, in which a one-dimensional spatial variation of the electron temperature is produced perpendicular to the current.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

Skin Conductance at Baseline and Post-Heel Lance Reflects Sympathetic Activation in Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal

AIM: Skin conductance (SC) provides an objective measure of autonomic system regulation through sympathetic-mediated filling of sweat glands. This study aimed to test the utility of SC to detect sympathetic activation in neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). METHODS: 14 term (mean, SE: 38.8 + 0.35 weeks gestational age) neonates with chronic prenatal opiate exposure were enrolled. SC (peaks/sec and mean of peaks) were measured at baseline, during heel lance/squeeze (HLS) and recovery from HLS at 24-48 (mean 38) hours of life prior to treatment for NAS. Blinded coders with established reliability assessed neonates using the Modified Finnegan Neonatal Scoring System (MFNSS). Non-parametric tests were used to determine group differences, phase differences from baseline to HLS and HLS to recovery, and associations between MFNSS and SC measures. RESULTS: Neonates that would later require morphine treatment for NAS (n = 6) had higher baseline SC mean of peaks than those that did not require treatment (n = 8) (

Hepatotoxic Effects of Potassium Bromate on Adult Wistar Rats

Objective: We aimed to demonstrate the histopathologic effects of potassium bromate (KBrO3) on the liver cells of rats following oral administration. Method: Twenty young Wistar rats of weights 196-215g were divided into four groups. The control group A was orally administered with 1ml of distilled water daily; the experimental groups B, C and D were orally administered with 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight/day dosages of KBrO3 for 35 days. Both the control and experimental groups were sacrificed using the chloroform inhalation method at the end of study period. Results: Rats which received 200 mg kg-1 b.wt. of KBrO3 died within the 20th day of administration. The body weights were significantly increased (P<0.05) in the experimental groups from the 3rd to the 5th week of study while the relative weight of their liver were not affected compared to the control group. Histopathological examination of the experimental groups indicated; little sinusoidal dilatation in rats treated with 50 mg kg-1 b.wt. of KBrO3; hepatic vacuolation, large sinusoidal dilatation, degenerative changes and cellular congestion in rats, which received 100, 200 mg kg-1 b.wt. of KBrO3 compared with the control group, which maintained normal kidney tissues. These histological alterations appeared marked in rats administered with 200 mg kg-1 b.wt. of KBrO3.Conclusion: The present study indicated dose-dependent, histopathologic effects on the liver cells of rats administered with KBrO3. Our findings therefore suggest that chronic KBrO3 consumption may put the liver at some risk of adverse histopathological conditions. Thermoelectric Response of an Interacting Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in Quantizing Magnetic Field

We present a discussion of the linear thermoelectric response of an interacting electron gas in a quantizing magnetic field. Boundary currents can carry a significant fraction of the net current passing through the system. We derive general expressions for the bulk and boundary components of the number and energy currents. We show that the local current density may be described in terms of ``transport'' and ``internal magnetization'' contributions. The latter carry no net current and are not observable in standard transport experiments. We show that although Onsager relations cannot be applied to the local current, they are valid for the transport currents and hence for the currents observed in standard transport experiments. We relate three of the four thermoelectric response coefficients of a disorder-free interacting two-dimensional electron gas to equilibrium thermodynamic quantities. In particular, we show that the diffusion thermopower is proportional to the entropy per particle, and we compare this result with recent experimental observations.Comment: 18 pages, 2 postscript figures included. Revtex with epsf.tex and multicol.sty. In the revised version, the comparison with experimental observations at ν=1/2,3/2\nu=1/2, 3/2 is extended to include the possibility of corrections due to weak impurity scattering. The conclusions that we reach regarding the applicability of the composite fermion model at these filling fractions are not affecte
