The Growth of Single Crystal of Zinc Selenide

    Get PDF
ZnSe single crystal is made by the Bridgeman method under high inert gas pressure and its crystallographic characteristics are described. The lattice parameter of grown crystal is 5.667±0.003 Å and the twin structures along the directions are observed. There are two kinds of {111} planes in zinc blend type compounds, one is designated as {111} surfaces or A surfaces and the other as {111} surfaces or B surfaces. Their differences are determined by means of the anomalous dispersion of X-ray and are discussed in relation to etch patterns

Modulation of Wnt5a Expression by Periodontopathic Bacteria

Wingless proteins, termed Wnt, are involved in embryonic development, blood cell differentiation, and tumorigenesis. In mammalian hematopoiesis, Wnt signaling is essential for stem-cell homeostasis and lymphocyte differentiation. Recent studies have suggested that these molecules are associated with cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis. Furthermore, Wnt5a signaling is essential for the general inflammatory response of human macrophages. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by gram-negative periodontopathic bacteria and the resultant host immune response. Periodontitis is characterized by loss of tooth-supporting structures and alveolar bone resorption. There have been no previous reports on Wnt5a expression in periodontitis tissue, and only few study reported the molecular mechanisms of Wnt5a expression in LPS-stimulated monocytic cells. Using RT-PCR, we demonstrated that Wnt5a mRNA expression was up-regulated in chronic periodontitis tissue as compared to healthy control tissue. P. gingivalis LPS induced Wnt5a mRNA in the human monocytic cell line THP-1 with a peak at 4 hrs after stimulation. P. gingivalis LPS induced higher up-regulation of Wnt5a mRNA than E. coli LPS. The LPS receptors TLR2 and TLR4 were equally expressed on the surface of THP-1 cells. P. gingivalis LPS induced IκBα degradation and was able to increase the NF-κB binding activity to DNA. P. gingivalis LPS-induced Wnt5a expression was inhibited by NF-κB inhibitors, suggesting NF-κB involvement. Furthermore, IFN-γ synergistically enhanced the P. gingivalis LPS-induced production of Wnt5a. Pharmacological investigation and siRNA experiments showed that STAT1 was important for P. gingivalis LPS-induced Wnt5a expression. These results suggest that the modulation of Wnt5a expression by P. gingivalis may play an important role in the periodontal inflammatory process and serve a target for the development of new therapies

Background Coloration of Squamous Epithelium in Esophago-Pharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: What Causes the Color Change?

Objectives: This study aims to clarify the cause of background coloration in the epithelia between each dilated intra papillary capillary loop in esophago-pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Design: This is a single center retrospective study including 124 patients with 160 lesions who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy in Nagasaki University Hospital from September 2007 to March 2012; a detailed comparison between endoscopic images and pathology was performed. Immunohistological assessment using anti-human hemoglobin antibody (anti-Hb Ab) was performed to verify the presence of hemoglobin (Hb) component in the cancer cells. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and in situ hybridization (ISH) on Hb-β mRNA were performed to assess the production of Hb component within the cancer cells. Results: A strong positivity for anti-Hb Ab was observed in the squamous cell carcinoma area, whereas non-cancerous mucosa showed no immunopositivity for Hb. The concordance rate between anti-Hb Ab immunoreactivity and the presence of BC was as high as 80.9%. The amount of Hb-β mRNA expression was three times higher in cancer tissues compared with the surrounding non-cancerous mucosa. ISH images showed that the expression exclusively occurred in cancer cells, indicating that Hb is probably produced within cancer cells. Conclusions: The background coloration observed is partly due to an extravascular component of Hb. RT-PCR and ISH analyses indicate that Hb is produced within cancer cells

A multi-harmonics RF system using a MA cavity

    No full text
A magnetic alloy (MA)-loaded cavity has been installed in Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). A beam study with a new Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) system has been performed. The DDS system can generate multi-harmonic RF that includes up to 3 different RF frequencies. The multi-harmonic RF is amplified by a solid state and final amplifiers. These harmonic frequencies are in the band width of the MA RF system. Beam acceleration was performed by the system, and the acceleration efficiency was improved by both dual and triple harmonic RF
