Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as an Alternative Therapy for Chronic Pain

    Get PDF
This thesis discusses the possibility of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as an alternative therapy for chronic pain in contrast to traditional medical care. It examines 18 peer-reviewed scholarly articles and identifies benefits for chronic pain patients in terms of pain severity, quality of life, psychological distress, and duration of benefits. This thesis also identifies practical benefits of MBSR such as cost, implementation, no negative side effects, and the creation of life-long skills to be used after treatment has ended. In conclusion, there is a significant gap in the current academic literature pertaining to chronic pain patients who are minorities, men, or of lower socioeconomic status (SES). Future studies are needed to address individuals of lower SES to provide MBSR to all populations equally

Kirjallisuuskatsauksella haluttiin saada vastaus toiseen tutkimuskysymykseen ”Millaista on toimintaterapia osana syöpää sairastavien kuntoutusta kirjallisuuden perusteella?”. This study is about the need of Occupational therapy in Turku university hospital´s cancer ward. At the moment occupational therapy services there are limited due to resources and lack of information about the use of occupational therapy in cancer treatment. The purpose of this study was to research the need for occupational therapy in Turku University hospital´s cancer ward. Research problems were firstly what kind of a need of occupational therapy there is in Turku University hospital’s cancer ward and secondly what kind of things can occupational therapist do in the field of cancer care according to literature. This study consisted of two research methods: a questionnaire and a literary review. The questionnaire was based on the Occupational Therapy Needs Assessment (OTNA) that gives an idea of the need of occupational therapy from the patients’ and nurses’ point of view. The literary review was done from an international perspective and it answered to the question, what an occupational therapist can do in a cancer ward. Literature was collected through internet databases and it was mostly in English. The expectation was that there is not a lot of literature on this subject so systematic literary review rules were not used. As a result of the questionnaire all patients and nurses state a need for occupational therapy services in at least one field. Most patients felt a need for occupational therapy in enabling them in desired activities and the activities of daily living. The literary review showed that occupational therapy in cancer care is widely used in other countries. There were many articles found on this subject considering that this field has not been studied that much. According to the review assessment of activities of daily living, home visits and use of creative activities in therapy are common in cancer patients’ occupational therapy. Results showed that the need for occupational therapy is much greater than what is offered at the moment. In conclusion occupational therapy should be more used in cancer rehabilitation in Finland as it is in other countries

Architecture of Resonance : In Support of Community

    No full text
Architecture of Resonance looks at acoustics and resonance within spaces as a relational thinking, defining listening as an act of care. The project is inspired by the collaborative work of architect Céline Condorelli and artist-curator Gavin Wade called Support Structures. It is a work on community gatherings, on how to create an ability to be heard, to listen, and by small design interventions contribute to a larger change. This project is created in collaboration with the non-profit organization and integration choir Voices Without Borders in Stockholm, 2022. The choir started during the Syrian war in 2016. The method used in the collaborative part of the project is called Graphic Notations, a process of painting notes of music as it intuitively feels in your body. Architecture of Resonance is a bodily and spatial investigation of ways to vocalize the poetic and political aspects of a space, by developing a support structure for the choir Voices Without Borders. The project proposes a spatial supporting act, called the Resonance Structure, specifically made for the choir’s rehearsal room. It is a tool for listening, to support the resound of the voices in the choir, and to give voice to new stories

Come learn about an elementary school library\u27s Makerspace Mornings . In this space, students tinker, play, and create with materials such as Little Bits, an Ozobot, a sewing machine, and 3D printer software. Students might create Duct Tape projects or markerbots, use recycled items to create something new , or take apart old technology. The development, funding, and outcomes (intended and unintended!) of the space will be covered
