Phase Changes of Monosulfoaluminate in NaCl Aqueous Solution

    Get PDF
Monosulfoaluminate (Ca4Al2(SO4)(OH)(12)center dot 6H(2)O) plays an important role in anion binding in Portland cement by exchanging its original interlayer ions (SO42- and OH-) with chloride ions. In this study, scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the phase change of monosulfoaluminate due to its interaction with chloride ions. Pure monosulfoaluminate was synthesized and its powder samples were suspended in 0, 0.1, 1, 3, and 5 M NaCl solutions for seven days. At low chloride concentrations, a partial dissolution of monosulfoaluminate formed ettringite, while, with increasing chloride content, the dissolution process was suppressed. As the NaCl concentration increased, the dominant mechanism of the phase change became ion exchange, resulting in direct phase transformation from monosulfoaluminate to Kuzel's salt or Friedel's salt. The phase assemblages of the NaCl-reacted samples were explored using thermodynamic calculations and least-square linear combination (LC) fitting of measured XANES spectra. A comprehensive description of the phase change and its dominant mechanism are discussed.ope

Preparation of anthracene-labelled poly(methyl methacrylate) via atom transfer radical polymerization

Anthracene-labelled poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) where 9,10-bis(chloromethyl)anthracene and CuCl/2,2'-bipyridine were used as the initiator and catalyst, respectively. Both the linear increase of the number average molecular mass with conversion and the narrow polydispersity in the resulting polymers suggest that the polymerization proceeds in a "living" fashion and the anthracene molecule is incorporated into the middle of the polymer backbone. The initiation efficiency was low, ca. 13%, presumably due to some side reactions which compete with the initiation reaction. This work was supported by Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (971-1102-019-2)

The pharmacokinetic, safety, and tolerability profiles of eslicarbazepine acetate are comparable between Korean and White subjects

Eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) is a prodrug antiseizure medication for the treatment of focal seizures. ESL shows a well-established pharmacokinetic (PK)-pharmacodynamic relationship and has similar extrinsic epilepsy-related factors across ethnicities. This study evaluated and compared ESL safety, tolerability, and PK characteristics between Korean and White subjects. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single- and multiple-dose escalation study was conducted in healthy Korean and White adults. Participants randomly received a single dose and multiple oral doses of ESL (400-1600 mg) or placebo once daily for 11 days at a ratio of 8:2. Serial blood samples were collected to determine the plasma concentration of ESL and its metabolites (eslicarbazepine, [R-licarbazepine and oxcarbazepine). Safety and tolerability were assessed throughout the study. A total of 29 Korean and 20 White subjects completed the study. The PK profiles of the metabolites of ESL were similar between Korean and White subjects. The geometric mean ratio (90% confidence interval) of Korean to White subjects for the area under the concentration-time curve within a dosing interval of eslicarbazepine was 1.06 (0.97-1.17) and 0.96 (0.87-1.06) after multiple oral doses of 400 and 1600 mg ESL, respectively. Other PK parameters were also similar between the two ethnic groups. ESL was well-tolerated in healthy Korean and White subjects, and its PK characteristics were similar between the two ethnic groups. The results of this study support to use the same dosage regimen of ESL in both White and Korean patients with seizures.N

Metal-Insulator Transition in CuIr2S4: XAS Results on the Electronic Structure

    No full text
S K and Ir L3 x-ray absorption measurements across the temperature-induced metal (M) to insulator (I) transition in Culr2S4 are presented. Dramatic S K-edge changes reflect the Ir d-electronic state redistribution across this transition. These changes, along with a detailed consideration of the I-phase structure, motivate a model in which the I-phase stabilization involves an interplay of charge and d-orbital orientation ordering along Ir chains, a quadrupling of the Ir-chain repeat unit, and correlated dimer spin-singlet formation

Acral melanoma detection using a convolutional neural network for dermoscopy images

Background/Purpose

Acral melanoma is the most common type of melanoma in Asians, and usually results in a poor prognosis due to late diagnosis. We applied a convolutional neural network to dermoscopy images of acral melanoma and benign nevi on the hands and feet and evaluated its usefulness for the early diagnosis of these conditions.

Methods

A total of 724 dermoscopy images comprising acral melanoma (350 images from 81 patients) and benign nevi (374 images from 194 patients), and confirmed by histopathological examination, were analyzed in this study. To perform the 2-fold cross validation, we split them into two mutually exclusive subsets: half of the total image dataset was selected for training and the rest for testing, and we calculated the accuracy of diagnosis comparing it with the dermatologist’s and non-expert’s evaluation.

Results

The accuracy (percentage of true positive and true negative from all images) of the convolutional neural network was 83.51% and 80.23%, which was higher than the non-expert’s evaluation (67.84%, 62.71%) and close to that of the expert (81.08%, 81.64%). Moreover, the convolutional neural network showed area-under-the-curve values like 0.8, 0.84 and Youden’s index like 0.6795, 0.6073, which were similar score with the expert.

Conclusion

Although further data analysis is necessary to improve their accuracy, convolutional neural networks would be helpful to detect acral melanoma from dermoscopy images of the hands and feet.
</div
