Dr. Albertus C. Van Raalte opened this meeting of the Board of Regents of the Holland Academy with prayer. He was chosen to preside at the meeting. Among the board members present was Rev. Philip Phelps Jr. The two sons of Dr. Bernardus Ledeboer, M.D., were admitted into the academy and without the need for financial support. Van Raalte volunteered to head a drive for $600 to build a house for Rev. Giles Vande Wall, a teacher at the academy. There was an angry exchange between the father of Ale Buursma and the board causing the expulsion of Buursma from the meeting. Several matters relating to students made this a lengthy board meeting, causing it to be in session in both the morning and afternoon.https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/vrp_1850s/1142/thumbnail.jp

Considerable discussion about higher education is likely to take place throughout 1999 from the current legislative session through December, when the report of the Governor\u27s Blue Ribbon Commission on Higher Education is anticipated. Because faculty teach, conduct research and provide service to all Virginians, we have a unique perspective on what will be needed to ensure the continuing excellence of higher education in Virginia. Toward that end, we offer the observations below on funding practices, simplifying bureaucratic procedures, improving research and scholarship, and governance in higher education. We believe positive change can make real differences in the quality of the services and programs we provide
