Hierarchical and Frequency-Aware Model Predictive Control for Bare-Metal Cloud Applications

    Get PDF
Bare-metal cloud provides a dedicated set of physical machines (PMs) and enables both PMs and virtual machines (VMs) on the PMs to be scaled in/out dynamically. However, to increase efficiency of the resources and reduce violations of service level agreements (SLAs), resources need to be scaled quickly to adapt to workload changes, which results in high reconfiguration overhead, especially for the PMs. This paper proposes a hierarchical and frequency-aware auto-scaling based on Model Predictive Control, which enable us to achieve an optimal balance between resource efficiency and overhead. Moreover, when performing high-frequency resource control, the proposed technique improves the timing of reconfigurations for the PMs without increasing the number of them, while it increases the reallocations for the VMs to adjust the redundant capacity among the applications; this process improves the resource efficiency. Through trace-based numerical simulations, we demonstrate that when the control frequency is increased to 16 times per hour, the VM insufficiency causing SLA violations is reduced to a minimum of 0.1% per application without increasing the VM pool capacity

Effect of continuous cisternal cerebrospinal fluid drainage for patients with thin subarachnoid hemorrhage

External cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage is an effective method to remove massive subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), but carries the risk of meningitis and shunt-dependent hydrocephalus. This study investigated whether postoperative cisternal CSF drainage affects the incidence of cerebral vasospasm and clinical outcome in patients with thin SAH. Seventy-eight patients with thin SAH, 22 men and 56 women aged from 17 to 73 years (mean 51.2 years), underwent surgical repair for ruptured anterior circulation aneurysm. Patients were divided into groups with (38 patients) and without (40 patients) postoperative cisternal CSF drainage, and the incidences of angiographical and symptomatic vasospasm, shunt-dependent hydrocephalus, meningitis, and the clinical outcome were compared. The incidences of angiographical vasospasm (31.6% vs 50.0%), symptomatic vasospasm (7.9% vs 12.5%), shunt-dependent hydrocephalus (5.3% vs 0%), and meningitis (2.6% vs 0%) did not differ between patients with and without cisternal CSF drainage. All patients in both groups resulted in good recovery. Postoperative cisternal CSF drainage does not affect the incidence of cerebral vasospasm or the clinical outcome in patients with thin SAH

The Analysis of Vocational Aptitude Changing with Age

The assumption that vocational aptitude changed with age and with the kind of occupation was examined from the tendency of the fitted curve for the score of the aptitude test. 9 vocational aptitudes were measured by the general vocational aptitude test by Japan Labor Ministry. Subjects were 382 male workers (design engineers, turners, welders, can manufacturing workers, and crane operators) of from 20 to 59 years old, and 348 male and female students (junior high school, vocational school, and university) of from 15 to 19 years old. The design engineers' aptitudes advanced along the quadratic curve until 31 years old, but almost all the aptitudes of the other workers fell along the linear curve with age. The design engineers preserved various aptitudes until 52 years old, the turners 44, and the welders, the can manufacturing workers, and the crane operators 37. The students' aptitudes were equal to those of the workers of from 15 to 25 years old. The workers preserved Spatial aptitude and Numerical aptitude until 45 years old. This could be said in all the occupations here. Further it was made clear from the micromotion study that the influence of age was caused by therblig

    A New 100-GHz Band Front-End System with a Waveguide-Type Dual-Polarization Sideband-Separating SIS Receiver for the NRO 45-m Radio Telescope

We developed a waveguide-type dual-polarization sideband-separating SIS receiver system of the 100-GHz band for the 45-m radio telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, Japan. This receiver is composed of an ortho-mode transducer and two sideband-separating SIS mixers, which are both based on the waveguide technique. The receiver has four intermediate frequency bands of 4.0--8.0 GHz. Over the radio frequency range of 80--120 GHz, the single-sideband receiver noise temperatures are 50--100 K and the image rejection ratios are greater than 10 dB. We developed new matching optics for the telescope beam as well as new IF chains for the four IF signals. The new receiver system was installed in the telescope, and we successfully observed the 12CO, 13CO and C18O emission lines simultaneously toward the Sagittarius B2 region to confirm the performance of the receiver system. The SSB noise temperature of the system, including the atmosphere, became approximately half of that of the previous receiver system. The Image Rejection Ratios (IRRs) of the two 2SB mixers were calculated from the 12CO and HCO+ spectra from the W51 giant molecular cloud, resulting in > 20 dB for one polarization and > 12 dB for the other polarization.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ, version with high resolution figures is available via http://www.nro.nao.ac.jp/library/report/list.htm

Clinical Relevance of Blood Glucose and Gastroesophageal Reflux Symptoms to Depressive Status in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

A relationship between diabetes and depression is apparent. To clarify the clinical relevance of diabetic patients’ gastroesophageal symptoms to their psychological status, we retrospectively analyzed the data from a Selfrating Depression Scale (SDS) and a Frequency Scale for Symptoms of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (FSSG) among 143 type 2 diabetic patients who visited a general medicine department. Among the 45 Japanese patients enrolled, the group with relatively high SDS scores (≥ 36) showed higher (FSSG) dysmotility symptom scores versus the low-SDS (< 36) group, although the 2 groups’ characteristics and laboratory data were not significantly different. Positive correlations of postprandial plasma glucose (PPG) levels with FSSG scores (R=0.321, p<0.05), particularly with reflux scores (R=0.455, p<0.01) were revealed. PPG and HbA1c levels were not correlated with SDS scores. The patients’ SDS scores were significantly correlated with their FSSG scores (R=0.41, p<0.01), suggesting that depressive status is linked to GERD-related manifestations. Considering that the patients’ PPG levels were correlated with GERD-related symptoms, diabetic patients’ blood glucose levels are associated with depressive status. Collectively, key symptoms related to GERD and glucose level values would be helpfu

Change of CD20 Expression in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Treated with Rituximab, an Anti-CD20 Monoclonal Antibody: A Study of the Osaka Lymphoma Study Group

Change of CD20 expression was examined in cases of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). CD20 expression after treatment with anti-CD20 antibody (rituximab, Rx) for DLBCL was examined in 23 cases who received serial biopsy by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and flow cytometry (FCM). CD20– by IHC and/or FCM was defined as CD20–. Four cases were CD20– at initial biopsy but became CD20+ after chemotherapy with Rx (CH-R) (group A). Recurrent tumors in three group A cases became resistant to CH-R. Initial and recurrent tumors were CD20+ before and after CH-R in 17 cases (group B). Tumors before CH-R were CD20– in two cases (group C) and continued to be CD20– in one and turned CD20+ in the other with survival time after the relapse of 8 and 23 months, respectively. Evaluation of CD20 expression with immunohistochemical and flow cytometric methods is used for the prediction of responsiveness of relapsed DLBCL for CH-R

Zhongshan Station in Antarctica is located close to the polar cusp/cleft latitude. The field of view of the Syowa East HF radar also covers Zhongshan Station. Simultaneous quasi-periodic phenomena of optical aurora, HF radar backscatter power and Doppler velocity, and ground based magnetograms were observed in the magnetic postnoon sector (~330 MLT to 1510 MLT) on 3 August 1997. The characteristics of the quasi-periodic event are summarized in the following; 1) East-west aligned band/arc type discrete aurora showed quasi-periodic luminosity variations with period of -6-10 min, 2) Quasi-periodic variations of the optical aurora had one to one correspondence with the variations of HF radar backscatter powers and magnetic pulsations, 3) The HF backscatter region was located at the lower latitude of the quasi-periodic optical aurora, 4) Quasi-periodic variations of line-of-site Doppler velocity detected by HF radar showed very close relation to the magnetic pulsations observed at Zhongshan in Antarctica and the IMAGE magnetometer array in the northern hemisphere, 5) The IMAGE data revealed that the region of quasi-periodic HF radar backscatter (irregularities) corresponds to the region of intensity maximum of magnetic pulsations
