Heavy Gravitino and Split SUSY in the Light of BICEP2
High-scale supersymmetry (SUSY) with a split spectrum has become increasingly
interesting given the current experimental results. A SUSY scale above the weak
scale could be naturally associated with a heavy unstable gravitino, whose
decays populate the dark matter (DM) particles. In the mini-split scenario with
gravitino at about the PeV scale and the lightest TeV scale neutralino being (a
component of) DM, the requirement that the DM relic abundance resulting from
gravitino decays does not overclose the Universe and satisfies the indirect
detection constraints demand the reheating temperature to be below 10^9 -
10^{10} GeV. On the other hand, the BICEP2 result prefers a heavy inflaton with
mass at around 10^{13} GeV and a reheating temperature at or above 10^9 GeV
with some general assumptions. The mild tension could be alleviated if SUSY
scale is even higher with the gravitino mass above the PeV scale. Intriguingly,
in no-scale supergravity, gravitinos could be very heavy at about 10^{13} GeV,
the inflaton mass scale, while gauginos could still be light at the TeV scale.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures, references added, to appear in JHE

The Bougainville conflict: perspectives from Nasioi
In reading journalistic and some academic accounts of the Bougainville conflict, I have been struck by two weaknesses. First is a tendency to emphasise only those events immediately leading up to the outbreak of violence in 1988, to the neglect of significant issues originating decades earlier. Second is a picture of a monolithic, homogenous ‘Bougainville’, ignoring both past and present divisions among the population. Both weaknesses can be addressed by focusing on speakers of a language labelled Nasioi, who claim the land on which the Bougainville copper mine was developed; who have consistently provided a strong voice for secession from what is now the nation-state of Papua New Guinea; and who furnished the core personnel and most prominent leadership of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army. Their history in the twentieth century has been distinctive, and is worth comparing and contrasting with those of the other language groups on Bougainville and Buka islands. My comments are based primarily on my experiences living intermittently with Nasioi speakers from 1962 to 1978, with the opportunity to see at close range the lives they led before and after the development of the giant copper mine.AusAI
Leveraging Semantic Web Technologies for Managing Resources in a Multi-Domain Infrastructure-as-a-Service Environment
This paper reports on experience with using semantically-enabled network
resource models to construct an operational multi-domain networked
infrastructure-as-a-service (NIaaS) testbed called ExoGENI, recently funded
through NSF's GENI project. A defining property of NIaaS is the deep
integration of network provisioning functions alongside the more common storage
and computation provisioning functions. Resource provider topologies and user
requests can be described using network resource models with common base
classes for fundamental cyber-resources (links, nodes, interfaces) specialized
via virtualization and adaptations between networking layers to specific
technologies.
This problem space gives rise to a number of application areas where semantic
web technologies become highly useful - common information models and resource
class hierarchies simplify resource descriptions from multiple providers,
pathfinding and topology embedding algorithms rely on query abstractions as
building blocks.
The paper describes how the semantic resource description models enable
ExoGENI to autonomously instantiate on-demand virtual topologies of virtual
machines provisioned from cloud providers and are linked by on-demand virtual
connections acquired from multiple autonomous network providers to serve a
variety of applications ranging from distributed system experiments to
high-performance computing
