    Factors Influencing Information-seeking Behavior in Continuing Education of Nurses in Japan

    The effects of the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the continuous education of nurses have been identified, but no study has examined the information-seeking behavior of nurses who are using ICT. This study quantitatively and descriptively analyzed factors that influence clinical nurses’ information-seeking behavior. Information-seeking behavior of 324 nurses was observed and scored; the scores were subsequently compared between levels of the following categories: “individual characteristics,” “continuing education factors,” and “environmental factors of Internet usage.” Information-seeking behavior significantly differed with respect to qualification, institution where basic education was received, job ranking, a form of employment, membership to academic associations, and the environment in which ICT was used. It is necessary to create environments that facilitate information seeking for nurses in various departments, and to implement adequate information literacy education in order to support information-seeking behavior

    In vitro release of immunoreactive atrial natriuretic peptide from the rat atria.

    In vitro release of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) from atria was examined by ANP radioimmunoassay. Isolated right rat atria were incubated in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer, and test substances were added to the incubation medium. The fluid was assayed for rat ANP by a radioimmunoassay method recently developed in our laboratory. We produced an antiserum to human ANP(99-216) (alpha-hANP(1-28)) which showed a good cross-reactivity of 63% with rat ANP(99-126) (alpha-rANP(1-28)) and was useful for measuring rat ANP concentrations of the medium. Application of the medium to a reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system resulted in a single peak of immunoreactive rat ANP corresponding to a small molecular weight synthetic rat ANP of 28 amino acid residues. Catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine and isoproterenol) reduced the basal secretion of ANP, whereas acetylcholine stimulated the release of ANP. Forskolin and dibutyryl cyclic AMP did not affect the release of ANP. These results suggest the possibility that the regulation of ANP release may be partially associated with adrenergic and cholinergic mechanisms.</p

    AbstractGiven a graph G=(V,E), a set S={s1,s2,…,sk} of k vertices of V, and k natural numbers n1,n2,…,nk such that ∑i=1kni=|V|, the k-partition problem is to find a partition V1,V2,…,Vk of the vertex set V such that |Vi|=ni, si∈Vi, and Vi induces a connected subgraph of G for each i=1,2,…,k. For the tripartition problem on a triconnected graph, a naive algorithm can be designed based on a directional embedding of G in the two-dimensional Euclidean space. However, for graphs of large number of vertices, the implementing of this algorithm requires high precision real arithmetic to distinguish two close vertices in the plane. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for dealing with the tripartition problem by introducing a new data structure called the region graph, which represents a kind of combinatorial embedding of the given graph in the plane. The algorithm constructs a desired tripartition combinatorially in the sense that it does not require any geometrical computation with actual coordinates in the Euclidean space

    Measuring the Accessibility of Study in Japan Utilizing International Admissions Procedures of English-taught Degree Programs

    The “300,000 International Students Plan” called for a significant increase in the number of international students in Japan, from 140,000 to 300,000. It was announced by the Japanese government in 2008 and the Global 30 Project, implemented as part of the Plan, has triggered the growth of English-taught degree (hereafter “ETD”) programs in Japanese universities. In this paper, the application guidelines and procedures of 20 universities which offer ETD programs for undergraduate students were collected and examined. Comparative analysis revealed that the admissions quotas for those ETD programs are, in general, limited to a small number of students and that their growth does not, therefore, necessarily lead to easier access for international students. The results of the analysis also indicated that the larger the international student admissions quota for an ETD program, the higher the accessibility of international admissions procedures provided by the respective university

    Artificial virus-like capsids decorated with ribonuclease S (RNase S) on their exterior were constructed by the self-assembly of β-annulus-S-peptide and the interaction between S-peptide moiety and S-protein. The β-annulus-S-peptide was synthesized by native chemical ligation of β-annulus-SBz peptide with Cys-containing S-peptide that self-assembled into artificial virus-like capsids of approximately 47 nm in size. Reconstruction of RNase S on the artificial virus-like capsids afforded spherical assembly attached small spheres on the surface, which retained ribonuclease activity

    The purpose of this study is to examine the development of a junior high school teacher\u27s English classes in the teacher\u27s approach to each class. Two English classes conducted in 2005 and 2006 were videotaped to compare the differences. Also, an interview with the teacher was conducted in order to investigate his teaching methods and philosophy. The results of the study suggest the following differences ; 1) the variations in a single activity 2) the relationship between and among activities 3) the increases in pair work 4) various increases in feedback to students

    Optimization of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography with a supercontinuum source for in vivo motion detection of low reflective outer hair cells in guinea pig cochleae

The epithelium contains not only immotile cells but also contractile outer hair cells (OHCs) that actively shrink and elongate synchronously with the sound. However, the in vivo motion of OHCs has remained undetermined. The aim of this work is to perform high-resolution and -accuracy vibrometry in live guinea pigs with an SC-introduced spectral-domain optical coherence tomography system (SD-OCT). In this study, to reveal the effective contribution of SC source in the recording of the low reflective materials with the short total acquisition time, we compare the performances of the SC-introduced SD-OCT (SCSD-OCT) to that of the conventional SD-OCT. As inanimate comparison objects, we record a mirror, a piezo actuator, and glass windows. For the measurements in biological materials, we use in/ex vivo guinea pig cochleae. Our study achieved the optimization of a SD-OCT system for high-resolution in vivo vibrometry in the cochlear sensory epithelium, termed the organ of Corti, in mammalian cochlea. By introducing a supercontinuum (SC) light source and reducing the total acquisition time, we improve the axial resolution and overcome the difficulty in recording the low reflective material in the presence of biological noise. The high power of the SC source enables the system to achieve a spatial resolution of 1.72 ± 0.00 μm on a mirror and reducing the total acquisition time contributes to the high spatial accuracy of sub-nanoscale vibrometry.
