    Searching for t-bar t Resonances at the Large Hadron Collider

    Many new physics models predict resonances with masses in the TeV range which decay into a pair of top quarks. With its large cross section, t-bar t production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) offers an excellent opportunity to search for such particles. We present a detailed study of the discovery potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider for Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the gluon in bulk Randall-Sundrum (RS) models in the t-bar t -> ell^+/- nu b-bar bq-bar q' (ell=e, mu) final state. We utilize final states with one or two tagged b-quarks, and two, three or four jets (including b-jets). Our calculations take into account the finite resolution of detectors, the energy loss due to b-quark decays, the expected reduced b-tagging efficiency at large t-bar t invariant masses, and include the background originating from Wb-bar b+jets, (Wb+W-bar b)+jets, W+jets, and single top + jets production. We derive semi-realistic 5 sigma discovery limits for nine different KK gluon scenarios, and compare them with those for KK gravitons, and a Z_H boson in the Littlest Higgs model. We also analyze the capabilities of the LHC experiments to differentiate between individual KK gluon models and measure the couplings of KK gluons to quarks. We find that, for the parameters and models chosen, KK gluons with masses up to about 4 TeV can be discovered at the LHC. The ability of the LHC to discriminate between different bulk RS models, and to measure the couplings of the KK gluons is found to be highly model dependent.Comment: revtex3, 27 pages, 5 tables, 6 figure

    Making judgements about students making work : lecturers’ assessment practices in art and design.

    This research study explores the assessment practices in two higher education art and design departments. The key aim of this research was to explore art and design studio assessment practices as lived by and experienced by art and design lecturers. This work draws on two bodies of pre existing research. Firstly this study adopted innovative methodological approaches that have been employed to good effect to explore assessment in text based subjects (think aloud) and moderation mark agreement (observation). Secondly the study builds on existing research into the assessment of creative practice. By applying thinking aloud methodologies into a creative practice assessment context the authors seek to illuminate the ‘in practice’ rather than espoused assessment approaches adopted. The analysis suggests that lecturers in the study employed three macro conceptions of quality to support the judgement process. These were; the demonstration of significant learning over time, the demonstration of effective studentship and the presentation of meaningful art/design work

    The effects of increased freshwater inflow on metal enrichment in selected Eastern Cape estuaries, South Africa

    The concentrations of select metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, Ni and Zn) within the water column and sediment of the permanently open Kariega Estuary and temporary open / closed Riet and East Kleinemonde Estuaries were investigated during a dry and a wet season. Enrichment factors (EFs), using Fe as a reference element, and baseline linear regression models for metals vs Fe were used to assess the extent of metal enrichment in the sediments. The results of the study indicate that Cd, Co Ni and Pb were enriched above baseline concentrations (1.0 < EF < 4.1) in the sediments of all three estuaries. Co, Pb and Ni enrichment in the Kariega Estuary sediments was significantly higher during the dry season, and the mean concentrations of Pb and Cd in the water column were 19-fold and 66-fold higher in the dry season. The elevated concentration of metals during the dry season could be related to accumulation of diffuse pollution from human activities within the catchment area. Conversely, inflow of freshwater into the estuary had the net effect of reducing the concentration and enrichment of these metals within the Kariega Estuary due to scouring and outflow of estuarine water and sediment into the marine environment. The temporal variations in metal concentrations and enrichment factors were less pronounced in the temporary open / closed estuaries than the Kariega Estuary. The observed trend can probably be related to the low anthropogenic impact within the catchment areas of these systems, and the relatively smaller size of the catchments. Significant spatial variations existed in metal enrichment in the sediment of both the East Kleinemonde and Riet Estuaries, with the highest degrees of enrichment occurring in the sediments from the marine environment and lower reaches

    Relationships between morphological and chemical characteristics of perennial ryegrass varieties and intake by sheep under continuous stocking management

    Plots of five intermediate-heading varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) [AberDove, Belramo and Glen (diploid); Twins (tetraploid); and AberExcel (tetraploid hybrid)] were continuously stocked with sheep to maintain a target sward surface height of 4050 mm. Daily dry matter (DM) intake was significantly different (F-value = 0.032) between the varieties, with the tetraploid hybrid AberExcel having the highest values for daily DM intake and intake rate during eating. Amongst the diploid varieties, intake rate tended to be higher for sheep grazing Glen. The varieties comprised a wide range in potential growth habit, from the relatively prostrate, highly tillered Glen to the more-erect AberExcel and there were differences between them in the vertical distribution of leaves within the sward canopy. The leaves of AberExcel weighed 3.6 mg DM cm(-2) leaf area in contrast to the other varieties (4.3-5.3 mg DM cm(-2) leaf area) resulting in a high leaf area index (LAI) in relation to the green leaf mass. Intake rate was not significantly correlated with extended tiller and sheath tube lengths, partition of herbage mass, number of tillers per square metre or LAI. However, canonical variates analysis showed that there were significant differences between the varieties for the morphological and chemical factors examined. Other factors also need to be explored to explain these differences in ingestive behaviour in order to identify plant traits that are correlated with herbage intake rate. These are needed for varieties destined for grazing use, both during the breeding programme and their subsequent evaluation

    Intake Characteristics and Performance of Contrasting Grass Varieties Continuously Stocked with Sheep

    Fifteen intermediate-heading perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) varieties were grazed by sheep under continuous variable stocking management. Mean daily grass dry matter intake per ewe was positively correlated with liveweight gain per ewe (r = 0.63) and per ha (r = 0.58) over an 8-month grazing season. Daily intake was not correlated with grazing time (r = 0.12) but was positively correlated with instantaneous dry matter intake rate (r = 0.75). Breeding varieties with high intake rate characteristics should allow increases in the contribution of grazed grass to grassland-based livestock farming. There is now a need to identify morphological and chemical characteristics of varieties that are correlated with high intake rate and a need to develop tools, which enable these traits to be identified rapidly in grass breeding programmes
