This paper examines texts written about the phonograph from the time of its invention in 1877 up to about 1890, a period when its existence was common knowledge but before it became a fixture in public life. During these years of public scarcity, many authors, in particular Thomas Edison speculated on various utopian transformations that the phonograph might effect on society. These texts were often presented as scientific discourse, but at the same time included frequent references to classical mythology and mysticism. I argue that these references to myth and mysticism are more than superficial rhetorical flourishes, and that at a deep level these texts function as mythopoeia, a kind of fabricated mythology with a clear and consistent thematic structure. I describe this structure and show how authors deployed it to support a utopian cultural agenda. Through another body of contemporaneous texts I also identify complimentary patterns of cultural anxiety that, while seemingly written in opposition to the “utopian” texts, rely on the same engagement with myth and mysticism and incorporate many of the same themes. From critical accounting to an account of critique: The case of cultural emancipators

    Get PDF
Drawing on the Boltanski’s sociology of critique, this paper examines how critique contributes to debates in accounting research. Our analysis reveals two responses to critique: (1) reality critiques, uncovering how a research programme is diffused and accepted; and (2) truth critiques questioning object justness and legitimacy. Reality critiques occur before truth critiques but after isolated attempts at emancipation from the dominant perspective. Once the reality critique is articulated, emancipation commences. Truth critiques are not changing events but theorize the rise of isolated attempts at doing differently. In fostering and accelerating emancipation, a critique does not need to be explicitly referenced

Histories of the Invisible: Technology Discourses in the Age of Phonography

In this dissertation I identify and examine various discursive strategies in a number of theoretical, aesthetic, and technical writings about music technologies, and assess their impact on related phonographic and musical practices. I examine sources from several polemical and divisive moments in the discursive history of the phonograph, namely: Popular science articles about the phonograph that appeared in various periodicals from the mid-1870s to the early 1890s; Articles concerning sound engineering research from scientific journals of the 1920s to 1930s; Aesthetic writings in audiophile journals of the 1920s-1950s; Popular histories of the phonograph; and a small number of influential writings by media theorists of the mid to late twentieth century. In contrast to many recent studies that frame these discourses in terms of the interaction of phonography as a technology versus music as a culture, my dissertation challenges the view that music technologies, in particular sound recording and reproduction devices, have influenced musical practice and culture in one way or another. Indeed, the dissertation shows that these kinds of approaches have had the unintended effect of creating and sustaining listening practices that are themselves "phonographic." The final chapter examines the influence of these phonographic listening practices on various branches of music scholarship and pedagogy

Cooperatives: governance and accountability systems for a better world?

To date, there are few general studies on cooperatives, with some being empirical, practical or issue-driven (Tchami, 2007 ) whilst others are very specialised (Gouil, 2010 ; Jaumier, 2016 ; Jaumier et al., 2012 ; Joannidès, 2013 ). In most cases, most studies focus on a particular type of organisation, generally farmers\u27 cooperatives (Deroy and Thénot, 2012 ; Thénot, 2011 ; vanPeursem et al., 2016 ). Considering cooperatives as case studies often leads to empirical discussions of particular industries or countries, but rarely leads to a conceptualisation of the issues that affect the cooperative form (Béziaud, 2012 ; Diaz, 2012 ; Filippi, 2012 ; Fortin, 2012 ; Salgado, 2012 ; Zhang and Mu, 2012 ). Apart from a growing number of publications in French, Spanish and Portuguese, only Organization has devoted a special issue to cooperatives
