Estimative for the size of the compactification radius of a one extra dimension Universe
In this work, we use the Casimir effect to probe the existence of one extra
dimension. We begin by evaluating the Casimir pressure between two plates in a
manifold, and then use an appropriate statistical analysis in
order to compare the theoretical expression with a recent experimental data and
set bounds for the compactification radius
Emergentism and musicology: an alternative perspective to the understanding of dissonance.
In this paper we develop an approach to musicology within the
discussion of emergentism. First of all, we claim that some theories of
musicology could be insufficient in describing and explaining musical
phenomena when emergent properties are not taken into account. Actually,
musicology usually considers just syntactical elements, structures and
processes and puts only a little emphasis, if any, over perceptual aspects of
human hearing. On the other hand, recent research efforts are currently being
directed towards an understanding of the emergent properties of auditory
perception, especially in fields such as cognitive science. Such research leads
to other views concerning old issues in musicology and could create a fruitful
approach, filling the gap between musicology and auditory perception

Water activity in lamellar stacks of lipid bilayers: "Hydration forces" revisited
Water activity and its relationship with interactions stabilising lamellar
stacks of mixed lipid bilayers in their fluid state are investigated by means
of osmotic pressure measurements coupled with small-angle x-ray scattering. The
(electrically-neutral) bilayers are composed of a mixture in various
proportions of lecithin, a zwitterionic phospholipid, and Simulsol, a non-ionic
cosurfactant with an ethoxylated polar head. For highly dehydrated samples the
osmotic pressure profile always exhibits the "classical" exponential decay as
hydration increases but, depending on Simulsol to lecithin ratio, it becomes
either of the "bound" or "unbound" types for more water-swollen systems. A
simple thermodynamic model is used for interpreting the results without
resorting to the celebrated but elusive "hydration forces"Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in The European

Autonomy and sustainability: an integrated analysis of the development of new approaches to agrosystem management in family-based farming in carnaubais territory, Piauí, Brazil.
This paper seeks to analyze an endogenous development scheme implemented by farming families, involving innovations in the organic production of watermelons; this was a novel local initiative reflecting the creative drive of the farmers themselves, against a background marked by considerable political and institutional uncertainty. The scheme was evaluated in terms of a set of systemic properties measured by multidimensional indicators for farming systems. Data on the selected indicators were collected by field observations, monitoring of production units, and direct semi-structured interviews with farmers. In general terms, the innovations prompted improvements in the various components of extensive environmental and social sustainability, enabling a more sustainable land use through chemical, physical and biological improvements to the soil in the farming systems studied, ensuring increased incomes and the maintenance of family employment, strengthening the farmers? resources and improving their control over resources, and reducing the degree of dependency in relations between the farming unit and the broader context
