    Scratch を用いた中学生向けプログラミング入門講座 : 電子情報工学科体験授業「チャレンジ ゲームプログラミング」の取り組み

    The authors report an introductory course of computer programming for junior high students. The theme is game programming, which is familiar to them. Scratch is adopted as the programming envi- ronment because it is easily approachable. Enrolled students cooperated as mentors. The first half of the course is the lecture of introduction to programming and basics of Scratch programming. The latter half is practice of game programming under instruction of mentors. The courses have been carried out in 2013 and 2014. Most the students taking the course are satisfied with the course. Improvement of the contents of the course and efficiency of operation based on the feedback are current issues

    In recent years, fuel cells operating at relatively high temperatures, such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) using an oxide ion conducting electrolyte and proton ceramics fuel cells (PCFCs) using an proton conducting electrolyte, attract attentions as high-efficient energy-conversion devices. For further enhancements of the performance and the durability of SCFCs and PCFCs, it is essential to understand the electrode reactions. In particular, the knowledge on the dominant reaction path in the electrodes would help us to optimize the material and the microstructure of the electrode.     Immune-related aseptic meningitis diagnosed by Cube FLAIR on enhanced magnetic resonance imaging for a lung cancer patient administered atezolizumab: A case report

    Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can cause immune-related adverse events (irAEs), such as neurological toxicity. A 46-year-old man was diagnosed with squamous cell lung cancer. Lung cancer recurred 3 years after he experienced left segmental lung rejection. Therefore, he received atezolizumab as fourth-line chemotherapy. He experienced fever, headache, and decreased consciousness 10 days after the first dose of atezolizumab. Plain head computed tomography and cerebrospinal fluid examination showed no significant findings. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a Gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced Cube fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequence showed nodular abnormalities with contrast enhancement. Thus, aseptic meningitis caused by ICIs was suspected. His consciousness level gradually improved with glucocorticoid therapy. Moreover, most nodular abnormalities observed on cerebral MRI disappeared concurrently. Thus, Gd-enhanced Cube FLAIR sequence has the unique ability to reveal immune-related aseptic meningiti

    Comparison of Seven Texture Analysis Indices for Their Applicability to Stereological Correction of Mineral Liberation Assessment in Binary Particle Systems

    An effective correction method for stereological bias is required because of the importance of accurate assessment of mineral liberation of ore particles. Stereological bias is error caused by the estimation of a three-dimensional liberation state based on two-dimensional sectional measurements. Recent studies have proposed a stereological correction method based on sectional particle texture analysis, which employs numerical particle models. However, the applicability of this method to unfamiliar particle systems, with different shape and texture characteristics from the numerical particle model, has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, the viability of the method for examination of the internal structure and shape of unfamiliar particles, was assessed using four types of particle systems, based on combinations of two types of internal structures (Boolean and Voronoi) and two types of particle shapes (spherical and irregular). Seven different texture analysis indices were utilized for composition distribution correction with regard to each of the four types of particle systems. The results suggested that a model based on the angular second moment and/or entropy, employed by the spatial gray level dependence method, showed the greatest viability for assessment of unfamiliar particle internal structure and/or shape

    The Effects of Five Forms of Capital on Thought Processes Underlying Water Consumption Behavior in Suburban Vientiane

    A community’s water supply is one of its most important infrastructures, as sufficient quality and quantity of water are as much prerequisites for human life as economic development. The rapid urbanization predicted for developing countries will cause serious water shortages in densely populated areas. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is taking precautions by planning and developing their water supply infrastructure to ensure reliable supply of water. We used the five capitals model of sustainable livelihoods to capture how a household makes a living and analyzed the effects of five forms of capital (natural, physical, human, financial, and social) on water consumption behaviors from the perspective of the residents’ livelihood. We conducted a survey to gain an understanding of the thought processes behind water consumption behavior in two villages in suburban Vientiane. The results indicated that natural and physical capital delayed connections to the water supply. Financial capital stimulated the purchase of high-quality water in preference to a connection to the water supply. This lack of connection is not necessarily sustainable in the near future, considering ongoing urbanization. Furthermore, this possibility presents a difficult problem, as residents do not usually acknowledge it. To accomplish sustainable development goals, this gap should be overcome
