    Altered sensory innervation and pain hypersensitivity in a model of young painful arthritic joints: short- and long-term effects

    BACKGROUND: Early life experience can cause long-term alterations in the nociceptive processes underlying chronic pain, but the consequences of early life arthritic joint inflammation upon the sensory innervation of the joint is not known. Here, we measure pain sensitivity and sensory innervation in a young, juvenile and adult rodent model of arthritic joints and test the consequences of joint inflammation in young animals upon adult arthritic pain and joint innervation. METHODS: Unilateral ankle joint injections of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) (6-20 µl) were performed in young, postnatal day (P)8, adolescent (P21) and adult (P40) rats. A separate cohort of animals were injected at P8, and again at P40. Hindpaw mechanical sensitivity was assessed using von Frey monofilaments (vF) for 10 days. Nerve fibres were counted in sections through the ankle joint immunostained for calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and neurofilament 200 kDa (NF200). RESULTS: Ankle joint CFA injection increased capsular width at all ages. Significant mechanical pain hypersensitivity and increased number of joint CGRP + ve sensory fibres occurred in adolescent and adult, but not young, rats. Despite the lack of acute reaction, joint inflammation at a young age resulted in significantly increased pain hypersensitivity and CGRP+ fibre counts when the rats were re-inflamed as adults. CONCLUSIONS: Joint inflammation increases the sensory nociceptive innervation and induces acute pain hypersensitivity in juvenile and adult, but not in young rats. However, early life joint inflammation 'primes' the joint such that adult inflammatory pain behaviour and nociceptive nerve endings in the joint are significantly increased. Early life joint inflammation may be an important factor in the generation and maintenance of chronic arthritic pain

    A predictive inline model for nonlinear stimulated Raman scattering in a hohlraum plasma

    In this Letter, we introduce a new inline model for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), which runs on our radiation hydrodynamics code TROLL. The modeling follows from a simplified version of a rigorous theory for SRS, which we describe, and accounts for nonlinear kinetic effects. It also accounts for the SRS feedback on the plasma hydrodynamics. We dubbed it PIEM because it is a fully PredIctivE Model, no free parameter is to be adjusted \textit{a posteriori}~in order to match experimental results. PIEM predictions are compared against experimental measurements performed at the Ligne d'Int\'egration Laser. From these comparisons, we discuss PIEM ability to correctly catch the impact of nonlinear kinetic effects on SRS

    Absorption imaging of a quasi 2D gas: a multiple scattering analysis

    Absorption imaging with quasi-resonant laser light is a commonly used technique to probe ultra-cold atomic gases in various geometries. Here we investigate some non-trivial aspects of this method when it is applied to in situ diagnosis of a quasi two-dimensional gas. Using Monte Carlo simulations we study the modification of the absorption cross-section of a photon when it undergoes multiple scattering in the gas. We determine the variations of the optical density with various parameters, such as the detuning of the light from the atomic resonance and the thickness of the gas. We compare our results to the known three-dimensional result (Beer-Lambert law) and outline the specific features of the two-dimensional case.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

    Optical response of superfluid state in dilute atomic Fermi-Dirac gases

    We theoretically study the propagation of light in a Fermi-Dirac gas in the presence of a superfluid state. BCS pairing between atoms in different hyperfine levels may significantly increase the optical linewidth and line shift of a quantum degenerate Fermi-Dirac gas and introduce a local-field correction that, under certain conditions, dramatically dominates over the Lorentz-Lorenz shift. These optical properties could possibly unambiguously sign the presence of the superfluid state and determine the value of the BCS order parameter.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Pumping two dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates with Raman light scattering

    We propose an optical method for increasing the number of atoms in a pair of dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates. The method uses laser-driven Raman transitions which scatter atoms between the condensate and non-condensate atom fractions. For a range of condensate phase differences there is destructive quantum interference of the amplitudes for scattering atoms out of the condensates. Because the total atom scattering rate into the condensates is unaffected the condensates grow. This mechanism is analogous to that responsible for optical lasing without inversion. Growth using macroscopic quantum interference may find application as a pump for an atom laser.Comment: 4 pages, no figure
