    Anomalous asymmetry of magnetoresistance in NbSe3_3 single crystals

    A pronounced asymmetry of magnetoresistance with respect to the magnetic field direction is observed for NbSe3_3 crystals placed in a magnetic field perpendicular to their conducting planes. It is shown that the effect persists in a wide temperature range and manifests itself starting from a certain magnetic induction value B0B_0, which at T=4.2T=4.2 K corresponds to the transition to the quantum limit, i.to the state where the Landay level splitting exceeds the temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, to be appeared in JETP Let

    High-frequency oscillations in low-dimensional conductors and semiconductor superlattices induced by current in stack direction

    A narrow energy band of the electronic spectrum in some direction in low-dimensional crystals may lead to a negative differential conductance and N-shaped I-V curve that results in an instability of the uniform stationary state. A well-known stable solution for such a system is a state with electric field domain. We have found a uniform stable solution in the region of negative differential conductance. This solution describes uniform high-frequency voltage oscillations. Frequency of the oscillation is determined by antenna properties of the system. The results are applicable also to semiconductor superlattices.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Step Bunching with Alternation of Structural Parameters

    By taking account of the alternation of structural parameters, we study bunching of impermeable steps induced by drift of adatoms on a vicinal face of Si(001). With the alternation of diffusion coefficient, the step bunching occurs irrespective of the direction of the drift if the step distance is large. Like the bunching of permeable steps, the type of large terraces is determined by the drift direction. With step-down drift, step bunches grows faster than those with step-up drift. The ratio of the growth rates is larger than the ratio of the diffusion coefficients. Evaporation of adatoms, which does not cause the step bunching, decreases the difference. If only the alternation of kinetic coefficient is taken into account, the step bunching occurs with step-down drift. In an early stage, the initial fluctuation of the step distance determines the type of large terraces, but in a late stage, the type of large terraces is opposite to the case of alternating diffusion coefficient.Comment: 8pages, 16 figure

    Intrinsic Tunneling in Cuprates and Manganites

    The most anisotropic high temperature superconductors like Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, as well as the recently discovered layered manganite La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 are layered metallic systems where the interlayer current transport occurs via sequential tunneling of charge carriers. As a consequence, in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 adjacent CuO2 double layers form an intrinsic Josephson tunnel junction while in in La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 tunneling of spin polarized charge carriers between adjacent MnO2 layers leads to an intrinsic spin valve effect. We present and discuss interlayer transport experiments for both systems. To perform the experiments small sized mesa structures were patterned on top of single crystals of the above materials defining stacks of a small number of intrinsic Josephson junctions and intrinsic spin valves, respectively.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

    Тема развития топливной энергетики на Среднем Урале представляет научно-исторический интерес, однако научных работ по этой теме немного. Для раскрытия вклада предприятия в развитие топливно-сырьевого комплекса на восточной периферии Свердловска в работе рассматривается предвоенная история добычи торфа на Свердловской фабрике изоплит с 1933 по 1941 гг. В работе рассмотрены основные месторождения предприятия и степень механизации добычи торфа. Проведен анализ архивных данных годовых показателей добычи торфа на предприятии и дана оценка вклада фабрики в добычу торфа в указанном топливно-сырьевом комплексе.The topic of fuel energy development in the Middle Urals represents scientific and historical interest, but there are few scientific works on this topic. The paper discusses the prewar history of peat industry on Sverdlovsk insulation board plant from 1933 to 1941 to disclosure the company's contribution for the development of energy complex on the Eastern periphery of Sverdlovsk. In this article it is discussed the main fields of the enterprise and the degree of mechanization of peat roduction. The analysis of archival data of annual indicators of peat production at the enterprise is carried out and the assessment of the contribution of the factory to peat production in the specified fuel and raw materials complex is given

    Vicinal silicon surfaces: from step density wave to faceting

    This paper investigates faceting mechanisms induced by electromigration in the regime where atomic steps are transparent. For this purpose we study several vicinal orientations by means of in-situ (optical diffraction, electronic microscopy) as well as ex-situ (AFM, microprofilometry) visualization techniques. The data show that faceting proceeds in two stages. The first stage is short and leads to the appearance of a step density wave, with a wavelength roughly independent of the surface orientation. The second stage is much slower, and leads to the formation of a hill-and-valley structure, the period of which depends on the initial surface orientation. A simple continuum model enables us to point out why the wavelength of the step density wave does not depend on the microscale details of the surface. The final wavelength is controlled by the competition between elastic step-step interaction and facet edge energy cost. Finally, the surface stress angular dependence is shown to emerge as a coarsed-grained picture from the step model.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure

    Josephson scanning tunneling microscopy

    We propose a set of scanning tunneling microscopy experiments in which the surface of superconductor is scanned by a superconducting tip. Potential capabilities of such experimental setup are discussed. Most important anticipated results of such an experiment include the position-resolved measurement of the superconducting order parameter and the possibility to determine the nature of the secondary component of the order parameter at the surface.
