    AbstractThis paper presents a novel membrane design for capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (cMUTs). The proposed design is composed of a thick membrane with reinforcing beams supported by a circumferential thin membrane to improve transducer sensitivity without degrading the membrane resonance frequency. Analytical formulation of sensitivity for the proposed design was newly derived and its validity was verified by finite element analysis (FEA). From the analysis, we confirmed that this thick membrane structure achieved three times higher sensitivity compared to the conventional design by decreasing 70 % of the mass of the thick membrane part with keeping the resonance frequency same

    A THz gyrotron with a pulse magnet has been designed, constructed and operated in FIR FU. It is developed as one of high frequency gyrotrons included in Gyrotron FU Series. The gyrotron has already achieved the first experimental result for high frequency operations whose radiation frequency exceeds 1 THz. In this paper, the design detail and the operation test results for sub-terahertz to terahertz range are described. The second harmonic operation is confirmed experimentally at the expected frequency of 1.005 THz due to TE_6,_11 cavity mode at the magnetic field intensity of 19.0 T

    Coexistence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic order in Mn-doped Ni2_2MnGa

    Ni-Mn-Ga is interesting as a prototype of a magnetic shape-memory alloy showing large magnetic field induced strains. We present here results for the magnetic ordering of Mn-rich Ni-Mn-Ga alloys based on both experiments and theory. Experimental trends for the composition dependence of the magnetization are measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) in magnetic fields of up to several tesla and at low temperatures. The saturation magnetization has a maximum near the stoichiometric composition and it decreases with increasing Mn content. This unexpected behaviour is interpreted via first-principles calculations within the density-functional theory. We show that extra Mn atoms are antiferromagnetically aligned to the other moments, which explains the dependence of the magnetization on composition. In addition, the effect of Mn doping on the stabilization of the structural phases and on the magnetic anisotropy energy is demonstrated.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
