    New entity of adult ultra-short coeliac disease: the first international cohort and case–control study

    Background: Ultra-short coeliac disease (USCD) is defined as villous atrophy only present in the duodenal bulb (D1) with concurrent positive coeliac serology. We present the first, multicentre, international study of patients with USCD. Methods: Patients with USCD were identified from 10 tertiary hospitals (6 from Europe, 2 from Asia, 1 from North America and 1 from Australasia) and compared with age-matched and sex-matched patients with conventional coeliac disease. Findings: Patients with USCD (n=137, median age 27 years, IQR 21–43 years; 73% female) were younger than those with conventional coeliac disease (27 vs 38 years, respectively, p<0.001). Immunoglobulin A-tissue transglutaminase (IgA-tTG) titres at index gastroscopy were lower in patients with USCD versus conventional coeliac disease (1.8×upper limit of normal (ULN) (IQR 1.1–5.9) vs 12.6×ULN (IQR 3.3–18.3), p<0.001). Patients: with USCD had the same number of symptoms overall (median 3 (IQR 2–4) vs 3 (IQR 1–4), p=0.875). Patients with USCD experienced less iron deficiency (41.8% vs 22.4%, p=0.006). Both USCD and conventional coeliac disease had the same intraepithelial lymphocytes immunophenotype staining pattern; positive for CD3 and CD8, but not CD4. At follow-up having commenced a gluten-free diet (GFD) (median of 1181 days IQR: 440–2160 days) both USCD and the age-matched and sex-matched controls experienced a similar reduction in IgA-tTG titres (0.5 ULN (IQR 0.2–1.4) vs 0.7 ULN (IQR 0.2–2.6), p=0.312). 95.7% of patients with USCD reported a clinical improvement in their symptoms. Interpretation: Patients with USCD are younger, have a similar symptomatic burden and benefit from a GFD.     This study presents the maximum size record of Siganus rivulatus for the Aegean Sea with some additional biological information. The biggest individual of S. rivulatus was caught in Akbuk Bight, Gokova Bay (Southern Aegean Sea) at 15 m depth with trammel nets on 29.01.2018. Specimenof marbled spinefoot was 27.1 cm in total length and 414.8 g in total weight. The specimen was female with a gonad weight of 2.43 g and it was determined to be 9 years old.     2-s2.0-85084387907Some biological aspects of marbled spinefoot (Siganus rivulatus) were determined from a southern Aegean Sea small-scale fishery. A total of 721 individuals were captured (335 females, 279 males and 87 immature) and sex ratio was found to be 1:1.27, female to male. Total lengths and ages of individuals ranged between 9.0-26.1 cm and 1-9 years. Asymptotic length (L?), growth coefficient (K) and the theoretical age at zero length (t0) were estimated to be 27.7 cm, K = 0.162 y-1 and t0 =-1.87 y. Length at maturity value was determined as 16.6 cm for females and 16.84 cm for males. Although S. rivulatus is one of the target species for small-scale and recreational fishery in the Turkish coast of the southern Aegean Sea, especially in Gökova Bay, official landing data is lacking for Turkey. Results of the present study are of crucial importance for further fisheries management of this invasive species.     Length distribution, sex ratio, length-weight relationship, age, growth, spawning period, age, and length at first maturity of four-spotted goby inhabiting İzmir Bay were investigated. A total of 1696 four-spotted goby were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007. The size of the fish sampled ranged from 3.1 to 9.2 cm total length. The samples were composed of 31.1% females, 27.7% males, and 41.2% juvenile individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.89. The age of the fish ranged from 1 to 5 years. The length-weight relationship and the von Bertalanff y growth function were estimated for all individuals as: W = 0.0036L 3.45 and L t = 10.29[1 - e -0.371(t + 0.502)]. Spawning period started in February and continued until May. The lengths at first maturity of females and males were 6.15 ± 0.18 and 6.38 ± 0.20 cm total length, respectively. © TÜBİTAK
