    Reexamination of Mocs and Tauti chondritic meteorites: Classification with shock degree

    The Mocs meteorite, which fell on February 3,1882,in Transylvania over a large area (15km by 3km) has been reclassified from a L6 to a L5-6 chondrite in this study. Six fragments of the Mocs chondrite were observed by optical microscopy and measured using electron microprobe analyses and standard wet chemical analysis. Although the petrologic type of the 6 samples is almost the same, 2 fragments : Mocs-1 and Mocs-3 show heterogeneous features (opaque shock veins and melt pockets) due to different shock degrees (S-5 and S-4,respectively). Therefore the mean shock degree of the Mocs chondrite was found to be S3-5. The Tauti meteorite which fell in 1937 in Transylvania was previously classified as L6 chondrite using the bulk chemical analyses of H. SAVU (St. Cerc. Geol., 2 (IV), 272,1959) (A. L. GRAHAM; Meteoritics, 14,1,1979; A. L. GRAHAM et al.; Catalogue of Meteorites, London, British Museum, Natural History, 1985). The chemical compositions of olivines and orthopyroxenes determined by electron microprobe analysis, the bulk chemical analysis, along with textural characteristics classify Tauti shower as L6 chondrite with a shock degree of S-3

    EAST syndrome: Clinical, pathophysiological, and genetic aspects of mutations in KCNJ10

    EAST syndrome is a recently described autosomal recessive disorder secondary to mutations in KCNJ10 (Kir4.1), a gene encoding a potassium channel expressed in the brain, eye, ear and kidney. This condition is characterized by 4 cardinal features; Epilepsy, Ataxia, Sensorineural deafness, and (a renal salt-wasting) Tubulopathy, hence the acronym EAST syndrome. Here we review reported clinical manifestations, in particular the neurological signs and symptoms which typically have the most impact on the quality of life of patients. In addition we review the pathophysiology and genetic aspects of the disease. So far 14 different KCNJ10 mutations have been published which either directly affect channel function or may lead to mislocalisation. Investigations of the pathophysiology may provide clues to potential treatments

    The Tahara meteorite which fell on March 26,1991 on a ship\u27s deck anchored at Tahara, Aichi-ken, Japan was found at Matsue-shi, Shimaneken on December 28,1992. It has been classified as an H4-5 chondrite using optical and electron microscopy and bulk chemical analysis. This equilibrated chondrite is completely different from the Mihonoseki L chondrite which fell on December 10,1992 in the same area of Japan, Shimane-ken. The retrieval process of new Japanese meteorites is similar to Antarctic meteorites of different origins which are collected in the same area

    Founder mutation in KCNJ10 in Pakistani patients with EAST syndrome.

    BACKGROUND: EAST syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in the gene KCNJ10. Among the 14 pathogenic mutations described so far, the p.R65P mutation stands out as the most frequent one and is particularly associated with patients of Pakistani origin. As a result we aimed to establish the existence of a potential founder effect in the Pakistani population. METHODS: To this end, we genotyped 12 patients from seven families and we compared disease haplotypes with ethnically matched control chromosomes. This haplotype was used together with demographic data for Pakistan to estimate the age of this founder mutation. RESULTS: We identified a small homozygous 0.694 Mb region around the KCNJ10 p.R65P mutation that had identical haplotypes in all of the patients which were completely absent in the control sample. Based on current demographic data and knowledge about disease frequency, we estimate that this particular p.R65P mutation arose 20 generations (about 500 years) ago. CONCLUSION: By knowing the prevalent mutation in a given population more efficient diagnostics can be performed and the families can benefit from specific counseling

    THE VARIABILITY STUDY OF MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS ON SOME SALIX SPP. GENOTYPES

    The present study followed the analysis of some characters of 14 Romanian and Swedish genotypes of energy willow in different ecological conditions. Thus, they were analyzed the next characters: stem diameter on the base, total grow/pl., grow/stem, plant height and. no. of stems/pl. The analyzed factors were: the area and the genotype. The area factors had three levels: Radovan (medium fertility soil - Control), Tâmburești (sandy soil on irrigation) and Ișalnița (antropomorphic soil formed from coal ash). The recorded date showes the diversity and the genetic potential of the biological material, emphesizing the well beahivour of the local genotypes RO 1077, RO 1082 and RO 892 created on ICAS Bucharest in the three location. The foreign genotypes with good results were Inger siTorhild. Analyzing the averagre values recored in the three location, the best results were obtained in the Tamburesti area under irrigation conditions, no matter the studied character, the humidity level from the soil being a key factor for the success of the energy willow crop, no matter the soil type or genotype

    Single cell analysis reveals similar functional competence of dominant and nondominant CD8 T-cell clonotypes.

    Immune protection from infectious diseases and cancer is mediated by individual T cells of different clonal origin. Their functions are tightly regulated but not yet fully characterized. Understanding the contribution of each T cell will improve the prediction of immune protection based on laboratory assessment of T-cell responses. Here we developed techniques for simultaneous molecular and functional assessment of single CD8 T cells directly ex vivo. We studied two groups of patients with melanoma after vaccination with two closely related tumor antigenic peptides. Vaccination induced T cells with strong memory and effector functions, as found in virtually all T cells of the first patient group, and fractions of T cells in the second group. Interestingly, high functionality was not restricted to dominant clonotypes. Rather, dominant and nondominant clonotypes acquired equal functional competence. In parallel, this was also found for EBV- and CMV-specific T cells. Thus, the nondominant clonotypes may contribute similarly to immunity as their dominant counterparts

    Holographic current correlators at finite coupling and scattering off a supersymmetric plasma

    By studying the effect of the order(\alpha'^3) string theory corrections to type IIB supergravity, including those corrections involving the Ramond-Ramond five-form field strength, we obtain the corrected equations of motion of an Abelian perturbation of the AdS_5-Schwarzschild black hole. We then use the gauge theory/string theory duality to examine the coupling-constant dependence of vector current correlators associated to a gauged U(1) sub-group of the global R-symmetry group of strongly-coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature. The corrections induce a set of higher-derivative operators for the U(1) gauge field, but their effect is highly suppressed. We thus find that the order(\alpha'^3) corrections affect the vector correlators only indirectly, through the corrected metric. We apply our results to investigate scattering off a supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma at low and high energy. In the latter regime, where Deep Inelastic Scattering is expected to occur, we find an enhancement of the plasma structure functions in comparison with the infinite 't Hooft coupling result.Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures, minor clarifications added, typos corrected, references adde

    Breaking of k_\perp-factorization for Single Jet Production off Nuclei

    The linear k_\perp-factorization is part and parcel of the pQCD description of high energy hard processes off free nucleons. In the case of heavy nuclear targets the very concept of nuclear parton density becomes ill-defined as exemplified by the recent derivation [2] of nonlinear nuclear k_\perp-factorization for forward dijet production in DIS off nuclei. Here we report a derivation of the related breaking of k_\perp-factorization for single-jet processes. We present a general formalism and apply it to several cases of practical interest: open charm and quark and gluon jet production in the central to beam fragmentation region of \gamma^*p,\gamma^*A, pp and pA collisions. We show how the pattern of k_\perp-factorization breaking and the nature and number of exchanged nuclear pomerons do change within the phase space of produced quark and gluon jets. As an application of the nonlinear k_\perp-factorization we discuss the Cronin effect. Our results are also applicable to the p_\perp-dependence of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for, and nuclear quenching of, jets produced in the proton hemisphere of pA collisions.Comment: 55 pages, 9 eps figures, presentation shortened, a number of typos removed, to appear in Phys.
