Rare top quark decays in extended models

Flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) decays t to H + c, t to Z + c, and H to t + bar{c} are discussed in the context of Alternative Left-Right symmetric Models (ALRM) with extra isosinglet heavy fermions where FCNC decays may take place at tree-level and are only suppressed by the mixing between ordinary top and charm quarks, which is poorly constraint by current experimental values. The microclimate in selected cultivation systems in the SHIFT Experimental Area near Manaus-AM.

O microclima no interior de sistemas cultivados selecionados na área experimental: Microclimatic variables were measured in selected cultivation systems and at the centre of the 19ha area during the dry and wet seasons of 1994. The peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) system, with a density of 2,500 plants/ha, the agroforestry systems with rows of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) trees 5m apart, and the secondary forest were chosen for this experiment, as they represent intermediate stages in relation to the primary rainforest. The peach palm system showed the greatest interception of solar radiation, resulting in lower soil temperatures compared with the control area, the soil of which was partially covered. The amounts of solar radiation measured close to the soil surface in the agroforestry systems were similar to the values observed above the canopy at noon, due to the width of the rows and the height of the surrounding vegetation, resulting in air temperatures and humidities similar to those outside. The secondary forest, which regenerated after abandonment of the rubber trees planted 10 years ago, did not show the marked vertical decouple in temperature and humidity previously observed in the primary forest, which has trees 35m tall and a density of 538 plants/ha

Voracity of Coccinella undecimpunctata: effects of insecticides when foraging in a prey/plant system

Copyright © Springer-Verlag 2011.Coccinella undecimpunctata L. is a euryphagous predator established in Azores that offers interesting potential as a control agent in the context of integrated pest management (IPM). However, to further develop IPM against aphids, it is important to evaluate the effects that insecticides might have on voracity. Thus, we proposed to evaluate the effects of pirimicarb and pymetrozine on the voracity of 4th instar larvae and adults of C. undecimpunctata, under distinct scenarios of exposure to chemicals within a prey/plant system. Voracity of C. undecimpunctata was not significantly affected by pirimicarb or pymetrozine when treatments were directly sprayed on the predator; however, when insecticides were sprayed on the prey/plant system, the predator’s voracity was significantly increased. Results suggest that C. undecimpunctata does not detect the insecticide on the aphids and indicate that the increase in voracity may be due to a decrease in the mobility of insecticide-treated aphids, since their capture should be easier than highly mobile non-treated prey. The consequences of such increase in the voracity for IPM programs are discussed
