"Knowledge-Capital, International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment: A Sectoral Analysis"

The knowledge-capital (KC) model of MNEs is now a widely adopted empirical approach to explaining the location and production decisions of global firms based on both horizontal and vertical motivations. While most of the existing studies have focused on highly aggregated national data, we extend this model to sectoral data consisting of broad manufacturing industries and explicitly account for the dynamic nature of international investment data. The empirical results from a dynamic panel data analysis indicate that that the predictions of the KC model regarding MNE behavior vary by the type of industry. Production processes in electronics and transportation-equipment are more characterized by efficient vertical specialization of R&D activities and assembly, while other sectors display more complex motivations.FDI, knowledge-capital model, exports, GMM

Structure And Properties of Nanoparticles Formed under Conditions of Wire Electrical Explosion

Structure and properties of nanoparticles formed under conditions of wire electrical explosion were studied. It was shown that the state of WEE power particles can be characterized as a metastable state. Random Surfing Without Teleportation

In the standard Random Surfer Model, the teleportation matrix is necessary to ensure that the final PageRank vector is well-defined. The introduction of this matrix, however, results in serious problems and imposes fundamental limitations to the quality of the ranking vectors. In this work, building on the recently proposed NCDawareRank framework, we exploit the decomposition of the underlying space into blocks, and we derive easy to check necessary and sufficient conditions for random surfing without teleportation.Comment: 13 pages. Breaking the News: First Impressions Matter on Online News

A growing number of people are changing the way they consume news, replacing the traditional physical newspapers and magazines by their virtual online versions or/and weblogs. The interactivity and immediacy present in online news are changing the way news are being produced and exposed by media corporations. News websites have to create effective strategies to catch people's attention and attract their clicks. In this paper we investigate possible strategies used by online news corporations in the design of their news headlines. We analyze the content of 69,907 headlines produced by four major global media corporations during a minimum of eight consecutive months in 2014. In order to discover strategies that could be used to attract clicks, we extracted features from the text of the news headlines related to the sentiment polarity of the headline. We discovered that the sentiment of the headline is strongly related to the popularity of the news and also with the dynamics of the posted comments on that particular news.Comment: The paper appears in ICWSM 201

Strong decays of N∗(1535)N^{*}(1535) in an extended chiral quark model

The strong decays of the $N^{*}(1535)$ resonance are investigated in an extended chiral quark model by including the low-lying $qqqq\bar{q}$ components in addition to the $qqq$ component. The results show that these five-quark components in $N^{*}(1535)$ contribute significantly to the $N^{*}(1535)\to N\pi$ and $N^{*}(1535)\to N\eta$ decays. The contributions to the $N\eta$ decay come from both the lowest energy and the next-to-lowest energy five-quarks components, while the contributions to the $N\pi$ decay come from only the latter one. Taking these contributions into account, the description for the strong decays of $N^{*}(1535)$ is improved, especially, for the puzzling large ratio of the decays to $N\eta$ and $N\pi$.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur

A survey on the effects of air pollution on diseases of the people of Rivers State, Nigeria

The effect of air pollution on diseases of the people of Rivers State, Nigeria has been studied by analyzing epidemiological data collected from the State Ministry of Health, Nigeria in relation to ambient Air Quality data of the State and National Ambient Air Quality Standard data. It was found that a total number of 30,435 disease cases were reported during 2003 to 2008, out of which 61 patients died. The diseases found to be prevalent in the study area as a result of air pollution were pertussis, pulmonarytuberculosis, cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM), pneumonia, measles, chronic bronchitis, and upper respiratory tract infection (URT). The ambient air quality observed in the state (lead = 0.1115 ppm/year, particulates = 10 ppm/year, N-oxides = 2.55 ppm/year, SO2 = 1 ppm/year, VOC = 82.78 ppm/year) was far worse than the World Health Organization Air Quality Standard (Lead = 1 × 10-6 ppm/year, particulates = 105 ppm/year). This clearly indicates their unsafe levels and concomitant health risks. This study (survey on diseases) showed that air pollution has direct impact on health of the people.
