Identifying Distinct Risk Profiles to Predict Adverse Events among Community-Dwelling Older Adults

    Get PDF
Preventing adverse events among chronically ill older adults living in the community is a national health priority. The purpose of this study was to generate distinct risk profiles and compare these profiles in time to: hospitalization, emergency department (ED) visit or death in 371 community-dwelling older adults enrolled in a Medicare demonstration project. Guided by the Behavioral Model of Health Service Use, a secondary analysis was conducted using Latent Class Analysis to generate the risk profiles with Kaplan Meier methodology and log rank statistics to compare risk profiles. The Vuong-Lo-Mendell-Rubin Likelihood Ratio Test demonstrated optimal fit for three risk profiles (High, Medium, and Low Risk). The High Risk profile had significantly shorter time to hospitalization, ED visit, and death (p \u3c 0.001 for each). These findings provide a road map for generating risk profiles that could enable more effective targeting of interventions and be instrumental in reducing health care costs for subgroups of chronically ill community-dwelling older adults

T3-E: Translating Time Study Implementation from Academia to the Real World

    No full text
Conducting time studies is often an essential activity for entry-level industrial engineers. In this paper, we will review the philosophy and methods for conducting time studies as taught in several industrial engineering courses in our curriculum. We will compare these methods to the actual implementation of a time study in a local manufacturing facility. The Mercer University faculty who are implementing the time study will describe the progress on their time study project and offer insights on theory versus practice

Commentary: Defining Disability in Health Care Education

    No full text
According to the 2008 American Community Survey, about 12% of the population of the United States is living with one or more disabling conditions. These conditions impact lives in a variety of ways, some with more or less direct impact on an individual\u27s health and access to health care services. Although it has been 20 years since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, people with disabilities still experience health disparities and a lack of access to the appropriate care. This commentary is part of a collection of articles that describe various aspects of incorporating content into the medical school curriculum to enhance the preparation of today\u27s medical students to meet the needs of people with disabilities. The authors briefly describe the scope of the problem and define the population of people with disabilities that constitutes the focus of the work described in the other articles in this collection
