    Transparent Roles in Feedback in the Student-Faculty Partnership for Teaching and Learning

    Faculty devote effort and energy promoting learner-centered opportunities that reinforce course content. Through the use of varied pedagogical strategies, appreciating the transparency in learning and teaching (TILT) process, faculty-structured learning opportunities can promote students thinking critically about their performance, building a repertoire of skills to advance learning at higher levels. The feedback that faculty provide and the format given can enhance student-faculty partnerships and success in the service-learning or practicum classroom. Feedback considerations for type (verbal, written, or a combination) and time are paramount to promoting faculty and student partnerships. The method of feedback delivery should be taken into consideration to support student learning

    Dose Response Effect of Caffeine on Appetite Sensations and Mood

    Caffeine is the most widely used psychoactive substance in the world. The known mechanisms and effects of caffeine consumption and metabolism suggest oral caffeine administration may affect appetite sensations and mood. Potential confounding factors that alter caffeine’s effects on appetite sensations and mood include caffeine dose, gender, BMI, and withdrawal reversal. Early studies have shown moderate doses (~3 mg/kg) of caffeine have equivocal effects while high doses (\u3e3 mg/kg) have deleterious effects on appetite sensations and mood. No studies have evaluated the effect of acute oral caffeine administration at low (1 mg/kg) and moderate (3 mg/kg) doses on appetite sensations and mood. It is hypothesized appetite sensations, e.g. Hunger, will decrease, positive mood, e.g. Liveliness, will increase, and negative mood, e.g. Sadness, will decrease with low dose caffeine; however, these effects will be mediated by gender, BMI and/or withdrawal reversal. To test our hypothesis, we had 18-50 y old adults abstain from all forms of caffeine 24-h prior to each laboratory session. At that time, they were given a relative (0, 1, or 3 mg/kg) dose of caffeine in a 350-mL beverage. Appetite sensations and mood were assessed prior to beverage administration and again 30-min later. Low dose caffeine significantly decreased Nervousness (p=0.023) and increased Strong (p=0.021) compared to placebo and moderate dose. Males only significantly decreased Sadness at the low caffeine dose compared to placebo or moderate dose (p=0.0110). Findings suggest the amount of caffeine ingested significantly affects mood and emotions at a low caffeine dose, but this effect may be mediated by gender

    Reactions to Supporters of the 2016 Presidential Candidates

    Two experiments were carried out to explore responses to supporters of 2016 Presidential candidates. In Study 1, a field experiment was carried out on the effect of political affiliation on an individual’s willingness to reciprocate a smile. The prediction that more participants (90 females, 90 males) on the SHU campus would return a smile to confederates wearing Trump vs. Clinton vs. a Neutral t-shirt was not supported. In Study 2, 253 participants volunteered to participate in a social perception experiment in which they rated confederates wearing a neutral, Trump, or Clinton for President t-shirt. In line with the hypothesis, MANOVA results showed that Trump supporters were perceived as more prejudiced (p \u3c .003) and Clinton supporters as more liberal (p \u3c .000)

    Intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy has been used to record rotationally resolved electronic spectra of Pt2 in the near infrared. The metal dimers were created using a 50 mm-long, platinum-lined hollow cathode plasma discharge. The observed transition at 12 937 cm−1 is identified as the (1,0) band of System VI, with state symmetries Ω = 0 – X Ω = 0
