    [Excerpt] Although the economies of many jurisdictions are improving, there is still some lingering global economic uncertainty. It is no surprise that governments the world over continue to revisit their employment laws to see what else, if anything, can be done to further stimulate their economies. 2013 was another busy year for employment law reform. Baker & McKenzie’s Global Employment Practice Group is pleased to present its 55th issue of The Global Employer™ entitled “The Employment Law Review and Reform Issue.” In this issue, we review changes to the law in 2013 and a look at pending changes for 2014. Included, you will find information pertaining to the leasing of employees in Germany; new measures in Spain intended to promote employment among young people under 30 and employee privacy rights over employers\u27 controls; challenges to the applicable interest rate to worker\u27s claims in Argentina; how employment law reforms will significantly impact employers in Mexico and in some specific cases, may considerably elevate increase the cost of formal employment; and controversy around making the Colombian Social Security System more progressive.     Synaptic plasticity is a fundamental feature of the CNS that controls the magnitude of signal transmission between communicating cells. Many electrical synapses exhibit substantial plasticity that modulates the degree of coupling within groups of neurons, alters the fidelity of signal transmission, or even reconfigures functional circuits. In several known examples, such plasticity depends on calcium and is associated with neuronal activity. Calcium-driven signaling is known to promote potentiation of electrical synapses in fish Mauthner cells, mammalian retinal AII amacrine cells, and inferior olive neurons, and to promote depression in thalamic reticular neurons.     Surface anisotropy and magnetic freezing of MnO nanoparticles

    Nanoparticles of bulk antiferromagnets often exhibit ferromagnetic behavior due to uncompensated surface spins. The peak temperature in the zero-field-cooled magnetization of MnO—in contrast to other antiferromagnetic nanoparticles—has anomalous behavior, shifting to higher temperatures with decreasing nanoparticle size. We attribute this behavior to surface anisotropy enhanced by the specific occupancy of 3d levels in Mn, which produces a high-spin–low-spin transition not present in NiO nanoparticles

    Nexus of Despair: A Network Analysis of Suicidal Ideation among Veterans

    The objective of this study was to estimate a network model of risk and resilience factors of suicidal ideation among veterans. Two network models of suicidal ideation among Operation Iraqi Freedom/ Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation New Dawn veterans (N = 276) incorporated key disorders, traumatic stress, and resilience constructs to contextualize suicidal ideation. Childhood trauma was positively connected with suicidal ideation and harassment and inversely connected with social support and distress tolerance. This exemplifies long-lasting associations between childhood trauma and revictimization, emotion regulation, and ability to form supportive social relationships. A subsequent model including lower-order facets indicated that combat trauma was predominantly associated with posttraumatic stress disorder–intrusion symptoms. This study highlights the importance of addressing both risk and resilience to reduce suicide risk among veterans and increases understanding of factors that contribute to suicidal ideation
