Shot-noise-limited spin measurements in a pulsed molecular beam
Heavy diatomic molecules have been identified as good candidates for use in
electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) searches. Suitable molecular species can
be produced in pulsed beams, but with a total flux and/or temporal evolution
that varies significantly from pulse to pulse. These variations can degrade the
experimental sensitivity to changes in spin precession phase of an electri-
cally polarized state, which is the observable of interest for an eEDM
measurement. We present two methods for measurement of the phase that provide
immunity to beam temporal variations, and make it possible to reach
shot-noise-limited sensitivity. Each method employs rapid projection of the
spin state onto both components of an orthonormal basis. We demonstrate both
methods using the eEDM-sensitive H state of thorium monoxide (ThO), and use one
of them to measure the magnetic moment of this state with increased accuracy

Developing a 3D printable electret material for sensing applications
The introduction of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has opened up a world of rapid product development in different fields. 3D printing of piezoelectric materials has been growing in popularity in recent years showing increasing promise in the design of miniature sensors for acoustic devices, diagnostics devices, and energy harvesters. In this study, we demonstrate that voided polymer electret material can be printed into 3D structures using Stereolithography (SL) printing technology. A test sample was fabricated by printing a thin membrane of voided polymer electret sandwiched between two base structures. The polymer electret is formed by incorporating dry expanded Expancel microspheres into a photoactive polymer solution of polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA). The average d 33 coefficient of the material were determined as 58pm/V. The results obtained showed the potential of using a voided polymer composite for 3D-printing functional electret based sensing devices
Was Sinn Féin dying? A quantitative post-mortem of the party's decline and the emergence of Fianna Fáil
This article calls for a reappraisal of the consensus surrounding the split within Sinn Féin in 1926 that led to the foundation of Fianna Fáil. It demonstrates that quantitative factors cited to demonstrate Sinn Féin’s “terminal” decline – finances, cumann numbers, and election results – and to explain de Valera’s decision to leave Sinn Féin and establish a rival republican organisation, Fianna Fáil, do not provide sufficient objective grounds to explain the republican leader’s actions. This article demonstrates that Sinn Féin’s election results during the period in question (1923-1926) were encouraging and the decline in finances and cumann numbers can be explained by the fact that the base year used to compare progress was 1923, an election year. Moreover, this article compares the performance of Sinn Féin to the first five years of Fianna Fáil (1926-1931) to show that what has been interpreted as terminal decline can also be attributed to normal inter-election lulls in party activity. Correspondingly, subjective factors – e.g. personal rivalries, differences in ideology, organisational style and levels of patience in terms of achieving political power – were most likely the determining factors rather than organisational decline
W(h)ither Fossils? Studying Morphological Character Evolution in the Age of Molecular Sequences
A major challenge in the post-genomics era will be to integrate molecular sequence data from extant organisms with morphological data from fossil and extant taxa into a single, coherent picture of phylogenetic relationships; only then will these phylogenetic hypotheses be effectively applied to the study of morphological character evolution. At least two analytical approaches to solving this problem have been utilized: (1) simultaneous analysis of molecular sequence and morphological data with fossil taxa included as terminals in the analysis, and (2) the molecular scaffold approach, in which morphological data are analyzed over a molecular backbone (with constraints that force extant taxa into positions suggested by sequence data). The perceived obstacles to including fossil taxa directly in simultaneous analyses of morphological and molecular sequence data with extant taxa include: (1) that fossil taxa are missing the molecular sequence portion of the character data; (2) that morphological characters might be misleading due to convergence; and (3) character weighting, specifically how and whether to weight characters in the morphological partition relative to characters in the molecular sequence data partition. The molecular scaffold has been put forward as a potential solution to at least some of these problems. Using examples of simultaneous analyses from the literature, as well as new analyses of previously published morphological and molecular sequence data matrices for extant and fossil Chiroptera (bats), we argue that the simultaneous analysis approach is superior to the molecular scaffold approach, specifically addressing the problems to which the molecular scaffold has been suggested as a solution. Finally, the application of phylogenetic hypotheses including fossil taxa (whatever their derivation) to the study of morphological character evolution is discussed, with special emphasis on scenarios in which fossil taxa are likely to be most enlightening: (1) in determining the sequence of character evolution; (2) in determining the timing of character evolution; and (3) in making inferences about the presence or absence of characteristics in fossil taxa that may not be directly observable in the fossil record.

Extreme mass ratio inspiral rates: dependence on the massive black hole mass
We study the rate at which stars spiral into a massive black hole (MBH) due
to the emission of gravitational waves (GWs), as a function of the mass M of
the MBH. In the context of our model, it is shown analytically that the rate
approximately depends on the MBH mass as M^{-1/4}. Numerical simulations
confirm this result, and show that for all MBH masses, the event rate is
highest for stellar black holes, followed by white dwarfs, and lowest for
neutron stars. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is expected to see
hundreds of these extreme mass ratio inspirals per year. Since the event rate
derived here formally diverges as M->0, the model presented here cannot hold
for MBHs of masses that are too low, and we discuss what the limitations of the

Dangerous work: The gendered nature of bullying in the context of higher education
This paper discusses results from a research project which set out to investigate gender differences in the nature and experience of bullying within the higher education sector. Gender differences emerged in the form and perception of bullying as well as in target response. Results also indicate that, irrespective of gender, bullies can capture and subvert organizational structures and procedures (official hierarchies, mentoring systems, probationary reviews) to further their abuse of the target and to conceal aggressive intent. These outcomes are discussed in relation to gendered assumptions behind management practices and in relation to the masculinist ethic that underpins many higher education management initiatives. Overall, results indicate that bullying cannot be divorced from gender and that such behaviour needs to be seen in a gendered context
Friends and Enemies Within: The Roles of Subgroups, Imbalance, and Isolates in Geographically Dispersed Teams
Research regarding geographically dispersed teams (GDTs) is increasingly common and has
yielded many insights into how spatio-temporal and socio-demographic factors affect GDT functioning
and performance. Largely missing, however, is research on the effects of the basic geographic
configuration of GDTs. In this study, we explore the impact of GDT configuration (i.e., the relative
number of team members at different sites, independent of the characteristics of those members or the
spatial and temporal distances among them) on GDT dynamics. In a quasi-experimental setting, we
examine the effects of configuration using a sample of 62 six-person teams in four different one- and twosite
configurations. As predicted, we find that configuration significantly affects team dynamics –
independent of spatio-temporal distance and socio-demographic factors. More specifically, we find that
teams with geographically-based subgroups (defined as two or more members per site) have significantly
less shared team identity, less effective transactive memory, more conflict, and more coordination issues.
Furthermore, in teams with subgroups, imbalance (i.e., the uneven distribution of members across sites)
exacerbates these effects; subgroups with a numerical minority of team members report significantly
poorer scores on the same four outcomes. In contrast, teams with geographically isolated members (i.e.,
members who have no teammates at their site) outperform both balanced and imbalanced configurations
Prevalence of tumor BRCA1 and BRCA2 dysfunction in unselected patients with ovarian cancer
Objective
The therapeutic benefits of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors highlight the need to evaluate BRCA1/2 defects in tubal/ovarian cancer (OC). We sought to determine the pattern and disease characteristics associated with tumor BRCA1/2 mutations and BRCA1 methylation in women with OC.
Methods
We obtained 111 OC specimens from 2 university hospitals and assessed BRCA1/2 mutations and BRCA1 methylation in tumor DNA. The frequency and pattern of BRCA1/2 defects were examined. Associations between patient/disease characteristics and BRCA1/2 defects were ascertained (Fisher’s exact test). Platinum-free interval (PFI), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) based on the underlying BRCA1/2 defect were determined (Kaplan-Meier analysis [log-rank test]).
Results
We observed a BRCA1/2 dysfunction rate of 40% (28/70) in high-grade serous tubal/ovarian cancer (HGSC), including 14.3% BRCA1 methylation (n=10), 7.1% BRCA1 mutation (n=5), and 18.6% BRCA2 mutation (n=13). Defects in BRCA1/2 genes were associated with stage III/IV HGSC (BRCA1 methylation: P=0.005 [stage III/IV] and P=0.004 [HGSC]; BRCA1/2 mutation: P=0.03 [stage III/IV] and P<0.001 [HGSC]). Patients with BRCA1/2-mutated cancers showed improved OS (hazard ratio [HR], 0.65; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.43–0.99; P=0.045) and a trend toward improved PFI (HR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.22–1.06; P=0.07) and PFS (HR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.51–1.03; P=0.07). No survival differences were observed between BRCA1-methylated and BRCA1/2 wild-type non-BRCA1-methylated cancers.
Conclusion
We observed a high tumor BRCA1/2 dysfunction rate in HGSC with a unique predominance of BRCA2 over BRCA1 mutations. While BRCA1/2 mutations conferred survival benefits in OC, no such association was observed with BRCA1 methylation
