The Experience of Unemployment in Ireland: A Thematic Analysis
This paper reports on the results of 13 semi-structured focus groups carried out with unemployed respondents across Ireland in 2010. The purpose of the research is to examine the subjective experience of unemployment across a wide range of dimensions. 15 overarching themes emerged from a detailed thematic analysis of the texts of the interviews. The themes highlight a wide range of aversive psychological states associated with unemployment. The themes examine: perceptions of the economic boom; reactions to the recession; attitudes toward media coverage; gender differences in experiences of unemployment; financial worries relating to unemployment; perceptions of the position of young people; uncertainty about the future; lack of structure and routine associated with unemployment; health issues associated with unemployment; identity challenges; the social context of unemployment; issues surrounding reentering employment; attitudes toward social protection payments; social comparison effect and perceptions of training services. This paper concludes with a brief discussion of the psychological impact of unemployment.
Development of a Strategic Approach for a Single EU Beef Market
End of Project ReportThe MacSharry reforms of the CAP in 1992 initiated a major EU policy shift from
product price support to a mix of lower prices and increased direct payments (DPs) as
the primary method of supporting the income of cattle farmers. The reduction in the
support price for beef and the introduction of new and increased DPs were phased in
over a three year period up to 1995.
In working paper No. 4 it was shown that cattle farmers in Ireland obtain the lowest
beef prices in the EU but they also obtain the highest DPs per kilo of beef produced.
The DPs are now a major source of revenue for cattle farmers in Ireland. Under the
current system of administering DPs for beef, the value of DPs accruing to the
individual cattle farmer is dependent on the possession of certain types of animals that
are farmed within defined stocking densities.
This paper evaluates how the changes have impacted on the margins for the cattle
enterprise on the farms in the Teagasc, National Farm Survey (NFS) over the five
year period 1993 to 1997. In particular the evaluation focused on:
• the trends in the size of gross and net margins for a range of cattle systems
• the trends in market based margins
• the contribution of DPs to gross and net margins
• the distribution of DPs among different types and size of cattl
New insights into the biological role of mammalian ADARs; the RNA editing proteins
The ADAR proteins deaminate adenosine to inosine in double-stranded RNA which is one of the most abundant modifications present in mammalian RNA. Inosine can have a profound effect on the RNAs that are edited, not only changing the base-pairing properties, but can also result in recoding, as inosine behaves as if it were guanosine. In mammals there are three ADAR proteins and two ADAR-related proteins (ADAD) expressed. All have a very similar modular structure; however, both their expression and biological function differ significantly. Only two of the ADAR proteins have enzymatic activity. However, both ADAR and ADAD proteins possess the ability to bind double-strand RNA. Mutations in ADARs have been associated with many diseases ranging from cancer, innate immunity to neurological disorders. Here, we will discuss in detail the domain structure of mammalian ADARs, the effects of RNA editing, and the role of ADARs in human diseases
Development of a Strategic Approach for a Single EU Beef Market: An Evaluation of Changes in the EU Intervention system and Labelling Regulations in Relation to Irish Cattle Prices.
Working PaperEnd of Project ReportThe intervention system for beef in the EU has undergone major changes since its
inception. These changes were introduced because of changing circumstances in the
EU beef market and because of cost factors and inefficiencies associated with and
arising from the intervention system itself. While justified from these perspectives it
can be said that from the perspective of beef producers the system has changed from
being a mechanism which aimed at and operated to achieve a producer Guide Price
which in turn was defined as “……..the price which it is hoped to attain on average
on the Community market for all the quantities marketed during a given marketing
year” (Com 370, July 1976) to one which has abandoned all efforts at achieving a
desirable producer price and which provides at best very short term stabilisation of
price at its market level.
The aim of this paper is to trace the major changes which have occurred to the
intervention system and the concomitant price achievement of beef in general in the
EU and especially that of Irish beef. These changes together with other market and
policy factors occurring on and since 1996 have combined to give a historically poor
price performance for Irish beef which despite the growing importance of direct
payments is still of major significance in the incomes and welfare of beef producers
TIDE:A novel approach to constructing timed-release encryption
In ESORICS 2021, Chvojka et al. introduced the idea of taking a time-lock puzzle and using its solution to generate the keys of a public key encryption (PKE) scheme [13]. They use this to define a timed- release encryption (TRE) scheme, in which the secret key is encrypted ‘to the future’ using a time-lock puzzle, whilst the public key is published. This allows multiple parties to encrypt a message to the public key of the PKE scheme. Then, once a solver has spent a prescribed length of time evaluating the time-lock puzzle, they obtain the secret key and hence can decrypt all of the messages.
In this work we introduce TIDE (TIme Delayed Encryption), a novel approach to constructing timed-release encryption based upon the RSA cryptosystem, where instead of directly encrypting the secret key to the future, we utilise number-theoretic techniques to allow the solver to factor the RSA modulus, and hence derive the decryption key. We implement TIDE on a desktop PC and on Raspberry Pi devices validating that TIDE is both efficient and practically implementable. We provide evidence of practicality with an extensive implementation study detailing the source code and practical performance of TIDE
Adenosine deaminases acting on RNA (ADARs): RNA-editing enzymes
Adenosine deaminases acting on RNA (ADARs) were discovered as a result of their ability extensively to deaminate adenosines in any long double-stranded RNA, converting them to inosines. Subsequently, ADARs were found to deaminate adenosines site-specifically within the coding sequences of transcripts encoding ion-channel subunits, increasing the diversity of these proteins in the central nervous system. ADAR1 is now known to be involved in defending the genome against viruses, and it may affect RNA interference. ADARs are found in animals but are not known in other organisms. It appears that ADARs evolved from a member of another family, adenosine deaminases acting on tRNAs (ADATs), by steps including fusion of two or more double-stranded-RNA binding domains to a common type of zinc-containing adenosine-deaminase domain
Orotracheal intubation in infants performed with a stylet versus without a stylet
Background:
Neonatal endotracheal intubation is a common and potentially life-saving intervention. It is a mandatory skill for neonatal trainees, but one that is difficult to master and maintain. Intubation opportunities for trainees are decreasing and success rates are subsequently falling. Use of a stylet may aid intubation and improve success. However, the potential for associated harm must be considered.
Objectives
To compare the benefits and harms of neonatal orotracheal intubation with a stylet versus neonatal orotracheal intubation without a stylet.
Search methods:
We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in the Cochrane Library; MEDLINE; Embase; the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and previous reviews. We also searched cross-references, contacted expert informants, handsearched journals, and looked at conference proceedings. We searched clinical trials registries for current and recently completed trials. We conducted our most recent search in April 2017.
Selection criteria
All randomised, quasi–randomised, and cluster-randomised controlled trials comparing use versus non-use of a stylet in neonatal orotracheal intubation.
Data collection and analysis:
Two review authors independently assessed results of searches against predetermined criteria for inclusion, assessed risk of bias, and extracted data. We used the standard methods of the Cochrane Collaboration, as documented in the Cochrane Handbook for Systemic Reviews of Interventions, and of the Cochrane Neonatal Review Group.
Main results:
We included a single-centre non-blinded randomised controlled trial that reported a total of 302 intubation attempts in 232 infants. The median gestational age of enrolled infants was 29 weeks. Paediatric residents and fellows performed the intubations. We judged the study to be at low risk of bias overall. Investigators compared success rates of first-attempt intubation with and without use of a stylet and reported success rates as similar between stylet and no-stylet groups (57% and 53%) (P = 0.47). Success rates did not differ between groups in subgroup analyses by provider level of training and infant weight. Results showed no differences in secondary review outcomes, including duration of intubation, number of attempts, participant instability during the procedure, and local airway trauma. Only 25% of all intubations took less than 30 seconds to perform. Study authors did not report neonatal morbidity nor mortality. We considered the quality of evidence as low on GRADE analysis, given that we identified only one unblinded study.
Authors' conclusions:
Current available evidence suggests that use of a stylet during neonatal orotracheal intubation does not significantly improve the success rate among paediatric trainees. However, only one brand of stylet and one brand of endotracheal tube have been tested, and researchers performed all intubations on infants in a hospital setting. Therefore, our results cannot be generalised beyond these limitations
