Entrepreneurial Productivity: Sectoral Contribution To The GDP Of A Developing Economy

    Get PDF
Using macroeconomic data for the period 1992-2004, this paper applies Granger’s causality adjusted regression model to examine the sectoral contribution to the gross domestic product, as a proxy for entrepreneurial productivity in Nigeria. The study found that only agricultural production and industrial/service output Granger caused changes in GDP, whereas oil production, capacity utilization and non-oil exports had no causality with GDP. The study concludes that oil output and non-oil exports are not significantly contributing to the economy and manufacturing capacity is grossly underutilized. The study recommends increased promotion of non-oil export; an improved operating financial environment; and, greater Nigerian content in the oil sector for increased entrepreneurial productivity.&nbsp

Effect Of Episodic Market Conditions On Beta Variability In Nigerian Stock Market

    Get PDF
The studies on beta variability have been fully documented in the literature with various empirical stances, meaning that a concession has not been reached. In view of this we employ the variable Mean Response Regression Model to investigate the random movement of beta coefficients over time and across market phases, using monthly stock returns from Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). Our findings based on this model show that beta coefficients move randomly around a trend line when the market is up-beat, whereas they tend to be less volatile in the down market. However, a long-run equilibrium relationship between the return on the individual security and beta components is evident in the two markets. Based on these findings we recommend that investors should arbitrage between these markets and take advantage of price differentials to earn riskless profit

Social Psychology, General Strain Theory and Prostitution Laws: A Case Study of the Nigeria Society

    Get PDF
People have different views on the subject of prostitution. A lot of arguments have been raised to explain the social concerns of the sex business. Proponents of legalizing prostitution believe that it will go a long way to reduce crime, improve public health, increase income, help people out of poverty and allow consenting adults make their own choices. Social psychological paradigms posit that there are psychological and social factors that serve as predisposing factors and precipitating factors to people who end up choosing prostitution as an option. The problematic of this paper is to probe into the causes and consequences of prostitution in Nigeria, and to what extent legalizing it will resolve the socio-psychological question of why people choose prostitution. Toxicity of oil-based drilling mud (OBM) on the survival of the fingerlings of Niger Delta mudskipper, Periophthalmus papilio (Boch and Schneider, 1801)

The toxicity of oil - based drilling mud on the survival of the fingerlings of Niger Delta mudskipper, Periophthalmus papilio were studied using static plastic tanks. The exposure period lasted for 96 hours. Lethal concentration (LC50) and lethal time (LT50) were determined. The control tanks contained no oil- based drilling mud. Results revealed increased in mortality values of the fish to all lethal concentrations. There was no mortality observed in the control tank. The oil- based drilling mud were toxic on Periopthalmus papilio

Diversity and Inclusion in the Nigerian Work Environment: Opportunities and Challenges

The Nigerian work environment reflects the nation's kaleidoscope of cultures, ethnicities, languages, and religions. However, the importance of leveraging this robust diversity and achieving an inclusive workplace is rarely researched. Using the thematic literature review method, this paper explores the complex diversity and inclusion landscape in the Nigerian work environment, focusing on the opportunities it offers for growth, the challenges to overcome to harness these opportunities and the policies for addressing the issues of diversity and inclusion. Findings revealed that diversity and inclusion attract top talent, enhance innovation, corporate performance, and decision-making, and reduce biases, stereotypes, and employee attrition. It also revealed complex challenges, including change resistance, hidden biases, and communication barriers. Organisations can navigate these challenges by employing diversity training, inclusive leadership, equal opportunity, and general language policies. A contradiction was also revealed between the country’s ability to utilise its diverse potential and what is being achieved resulting from a low level of equity and inclusion in the Nigerian workplace and inadequate institutional and governmental structure to address the issues of inequality and discrimination. It is, therefore, imperative to formulate policies with broader coverage, expand existing ones and strengthen enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance from both organisations and individuals. Enterprise Resource Planning And Its Future Relationship To Decision Support System

This paper looks at the development of ERP and DSS, with a focus on the differences between the two systems in terms of their evolution and applications and the potential for convergence in the future. For the most part, ERP and DSS have evolved in parallel, and as a result those organizations, which have already implemented ERP, are now having problems integrating DSS and data warehousing into their system. ERP vendors hold the opinion that it is comparatively simple to add on DDS applications, but this tends to be contradicted by the fact that most ERP specialists are not experienced in DSS or in data warehousing. Software analysts from both sides of the industry agree that convergence is inevitable, but differ in their views as to how this should be achieved. It would seem that a greater degree of collaboration, and the transfer of skills between the two sides, is the most practical option, coupled with a case-by-case approach to the requirements of individual customers rather than trying to find blanket solutions

Born and raised in southern Nigeria, Obi Nwakanma is an Igbo poet and scholar of African and African diasporan literature. The three poems included here, “A Brief Memoir of Time,” “Child of Four Winds” and “Last Will and Testament” come from his book, Birthcry (Kraft Books 2016), which was a finalist for the 2016 Nigeria Literature Prize. These poems capture the author’s uniquely lyrical, gnomic, and prophetic voice and represent well the themes that define the volume: ancestry, historical consciousness, the politics and psychology of decolonization, Africa’s place in a polyethnic global society, and openness to the future as the speaker’s generation passes on the challenges of life to the next generation, imagined as a child listening to the speaker’s verse

Assessment of Wastewater and Microbiological Characteristics from Selected Hospitals in Umuahia Metropolis

There is an increasing universal awareness of environmental problems arising as a result of COVID- 19 pandemic and pollution especially in Nigeria. Among the source of this problem is effluent discharge from industries, particularly hospitals in arable farmlands and environs. Two outstanding hospital were purposively selected; Madonna Catholic Hospital and Abia Specialist Hospital in Umuahia, Abia State. Their wastewater samples were collected from three different wards; maternity, general private, and general out-patients department (GOPD) wards. Results obtained show significant variation in physiochemical properties in some wards and heavy metals across all wards. Seven bacteria species; Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klesbsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Bacteriod sp and Streptococcus pyogenes and one fungi specie- Candida albican were recorded from the samples. The bacterial load in Madonna ranged from 209.04 to 232.95cfu/ml in January, February, and March each and was statistically the same in the three wards (p>0.05). Fungi load ranged from 1.58 to 2.35cfu/ml in January, February, and March each and also significantly different at (p>0.05). The frequency of microbial characteristics isolated in the two hospital wastewater ranged from 33 to 100% with 100% of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in all the wards, while other species varied significantly between 67 and 33% each. The results of the isolated bacteria from hospital wastewater showed resistivity to the tested antibiotics, and as therapeutic agents. Therefore, results call for need for urgent attention to be given to the discharge of wastewater from hospitals to ensure that food production around the environment is not contaminated
