A numerical simulation of pressure distribution and radius of drainage in infinite radial aquifers - constant rate case

    Get PDF
The diffusivity equation for the transient flow of slightly-compressible liquids has been solved for infinite radial aquifers, subject to constant terminal rates, by employing a Romberg integration of the Van Everdingen - Hurst explicitly solution over the transformed integral limits for .01̲TD\u3e500, the classical solutions presented by Carslaw and Jaeger, Mortada, Theis, and others are incorporated in the digital analysis to yield dimensionless pressures for 40 selected dimensionless radius (RD) ratios between 1 and 64 for dimensionless time values of .0005 to 1000.0. A new expression for dimensionless pressure-distribution, PD\u27(RD, TD), as a fraction of well bore pressure drop is presented with cross plots of the results obtained. These plots permit the solution of field problems involving PD\u27, RD, and TD without the aid of the computer and without interpolation. A radius of drainage relationship for an infinite radial aquifer is developed from the least squares polynomial curve fit of PD\u27 = .01. additionally, an on-line mapping technique is presented which permits the aquifer pressure distribution to be displayed graphically on the I.B.M. 360/50 On-Line Printer --Abstract, page ii

The effect of the glycemic index of an evening meal on the metabolic responses to a standard high glycemic index breakfast and subsequent exercise in men

The study investigated the effect of the glycemic index of an evening meal on responses to a standard high glycemic index (HGI) breakfast the following morning. The metabolic responses to exercise 3 hours after breakfast were also investigated. 7 active males completed 2 trials. In each trial, participants were provided with an evening meal on day 1, either HGI or LGI (high or low glycemic index) carbohydrates. On day 2, participants were provided with a standard HGI breakfast, then performed a 60 minute run 3 hours later. Plasma glucose and serum insulin concentrates following breakfast were higher in the HGI trial compared to the LGI trial. During exercise there were no differences in substrate utilization. Results suggest that consuming a single LGI evening meal can improve glucose tolerance at breakfast but the metabolic responses to subsequent exercise were not affected

Some aspects of transient flow behavior in artesian aquifers and in hydrocarbon reservoirs surrounded by artesian aquifers

An analysis of the principal theories concerning the transient movement of water in artesian aquifers and from artesian aquifers into hydrocarbon reservoirs is presented. Various analytical methods which can be applied to depict the behavior of these two types of aquifer systems are compared. Most aquifer studies to date have been based upon the Thesis Non-Equilibrium Formula. This equation has been used to calculate the coefficients of storage and transmissibility for aquifers; to evaluate well performance; and to investigate problems concerning recharge, movement, and discharge of aquifer water. However, one problem which still remains is that of accurately predicting the recharge volumes which supply the reservoir drawdown area under the effects of pressure decline. The present study suggests a possible means of accurately determining recharge volumes by the application of the Van Everdingen-Hurst Laplacian solution to the radial diffusivity equation for transient water movement. This solution would be based upon the withdrawal rates, cumulative withdrawals, and aquifer pressure profiles --Abstract, page ii

Influence of high- and low glycaemic index carbohydrate pre-exercise meal on fat metabolism in men and women

    Get PDF
Evidence supports increased fat oxidation during sub-maximal exercise, 3h following the ingestion of a low glycaemic index (LGI) carbohydrate (CHO) meal compared with high glycaemic index (HGI) carbohydrate meal. The meals contained the equivalent of 2g/kg body mass of available carbohydrate. The aim of this thesis was to investigate whether or not the increased fat oxidation following a low glycaemic index meal is evident in recreationally active participants following the ingestion of breakfast with an available carbohydrate content of 1g.kg-1 BM. Versatile Cold Atom Source for Multi-Species Experiments

    Get PDF
We present a dual-species oven and Zeeman slower setup capable of producing slow, high-flux atomic beams for loading magneto-optical traps. Our compact and versatile system is based on electronic switching between different magnetic field profiles and is applicable to a wide range of multi-species experiments. We give details of the vacuum setup, coils and simple electronic circuitry. In addition, we demonstrate the performance of our system by optimized, sequential loading of magneto-optical traps of lithium-6 and cesium-133.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure
