    Textual Meaning Breadth and Thematic Progression Variations of Bilingual Translational The Great Gatsby English-Bahasa Indonesia Texts

    This research investigated meaning and its realizations in bilingual translational texts. The focus is on thematic variations. This study was aimed at describing the thematic variations, in terms of textual meaning breadth and thematic progression, of The Great Gatsby texts, describing the contextual factors that motivate the thematic variations in question, and describing the effects of the variations in question on the texts as translational texts. The study was essentially qualitative with complementary quantitative data. The quantitative analysis was used to measure the overall degrees of variation represented by the mean of the variations and to measure the occurrence of the textual meaning breadth and thematic progression variations based on their frequencies and the extents of occurrence. The qualitative analysis was used to explain the quantitative analysis results and to discuss the contextual factors that motivate the thematic variations in question and their effects on the texts as translational texts. This research was a kind of semantic-translational content analysis. The subject of this research was bilingual The Great Gatsby English-Bahasa Indonesia. The unit of analysis in this study was independent conjoinable clause complex represented in the texts. There were 2,259 units of analysis in each comparison and there were 4,518 in total. The data analysis techniques used in this study were tabulation and comparative attribution analysis. The analysis of textual meaning breadth variations was performed in the form of blocks consisting of Theme and Rheme and the analysis of thematic progression variations was in the form of thematic progression patterns showing Theme-Rheme relations. The results of the study show that the overall degrees of both variations are in the range of low variation in which the mean of textual meaning breadth variation reached 0.56 and the thematic progression variation reached 0.76. The most prominent variation is also in the range of low category. Both of the variations were performed by adding or omitting Themes, splitting one unit of thematic structure into more than one unit, shifting or downranking, not expressing clauses or creating new clauses. The factors that motivate the small number of variations in question are the translator’s motivation in translating T1, the T2 intertextual context, and the same syntactic word order between English and Bahasa Indonesia. Some differences in the linguistic system of both languages, and the different situational and cultural contexts between T1 and T2 contribute to the thematic variations between them. With regard to the effects of the variations in question, it is found that the textual meaning breadth variation brings less effect on the text readability and information flow. Thematic progression variation gives more effect because they may cause dangling clauses which cannot be identified from which they are developed

    Men’s Language and Masculine Identity Construction in Sexist Jokes

    The power imbalance between men and women in society is reflected in their language use and it may be reinforced in sexist jokes. This is a sociolinguistic study on men’s language in sexist jokes on the Internet. This study is aimed at investigating men’s linguistic features and the masculine identities represented by those features. This is a descriptive qualitative study with complementary quantitative analysis. The theories of Tannen’s men language (1990) and Kiesling’s masculine identities (2007) were used as references to analyze the data. The results show that men’s identity of competing for solidarity embodied in discourses of insults, teasing, and joking is the most dominant identity represented in sexist jokes. This is in line with the main intention of sexist humor to laugh at women’s inferiority. Meanwhile, men’s dominance realized in report talk becomes the second most prevalent identity. The identities of politeness oaf, indicated by direct command, and freedom, shown by swearing and taboo words, are not influential as both do not contribute to the making of humorous expressions. These imply that context and communication purposes motivate speakers to use gender-related features. Reflecting that most of the masculine identities and the language features in sexist jokes represent men’s superiority, this kind of humor can be a way to maintain gender asymmetry in society. Besides, although humor leads to laughter and is considered healthy, sexist humor is dangerous as the expressions subordinate women. Therefore, being critical when reading the jokes and trying to avoid such jokes in communication is suggested

    Turn Holding Cues in Multi-participant Conversations in Downton Abbey Te

    This study aimed to identify the turn-holding cues in Downton Abbey television series and describe the factors contributing to the effective use of them. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were multi-participant conversations in the television series, specifically the first three episodes of the first season. The procedures for conducting the study were collecting the data, completing them with their context, setting, and then analyzing them. The result shows that to hold a turn, speakers use cues such as filled pause, verbal filler, tactically placed silent pause, new start, grammatical incompleteness, and rush-through. The speakers\u27 attempt to hold the turn are successfully accomplished as they can continue finishing their utterances without any interruption from other participants. The factors contributing to the effective use of turn-holding cues are putting the cues at strategic places, and most importantly, cooperation among participants
