Music as Soft Power: The Electoral Use of Spotify

    Get PDF
The changes brought by new technologies and the ensuing rapid development of the communication field have resulted in an increasing number of studies on politicians’ use of the internet and social media. However, while election campaigns have been the predominant research area in political communication scholarship, music has not yet been taken as an object of study alongside spectacularisation and politainment. Aside from some preliminary studies, systematic research on music in politics is scarce. The literature holds that music is a universal language. Music in politics can therefore be deemed to be an identification tool that can help politicians connect with voters and bring together positions between the different actors of international relations. This is an exploratory study about the use of music in political campaigning. It is focused on the role played by the Spotify playlists created by the main political parties in recent election campaigns in Spain. The initial hypothesis is that some of the candidates strategically selected songs to be shared with their followers. A quantitative content analysis (N = 400) of some Spotify playlists showed that there were significant differences in the selection of songs among the different political parties. This research contributes to the understanding of how Spotify has been used for electoral campaigning, as well as shedding some light on the current communication literature on music and politics

This paper starts with the influence of television by a review of some of the most relevant theories of communication in recent decades as the Agenda setting or the Spiral of silence. This review allowed a better understanding of the role of the news and information television consumption in the definition of our perceptions of the world and examine the limitations presented in the research that support these theories –limitations arising from their lack of attention to other genres, but news–. Ultimately, this communication aims to demonstrate how the sitcoms include references to matters and public figures that are current at the time of issue showing different positions on the matter and therefore highlights that we can not only find information on media intended to introduce this, but also we can also speak of the television infofiction, in wicht we found it can become raw material suitable for a plot, or, at least, for some mention, depending on the nature of the event today.

This text wants to convey the experience of the process of developing a contemporary tourist atlas. The following will describe the regulations that affect the standardization of cartographic sources in nature, the process of liberation and free acquisition in Europe. On the other hand, describes the treatment processes and spatial information obtained indirectly, and the problems attached. All these spatial databases are treated or processed reinterpreted using GIS software. The study area analyzed is the region of the Costa del Sol, located in the province of Malaga in southern Spain.Peer Reviewe

This paper explores the creation and content of apps about Donald Trump (n=412) published in Google Play between June 2015 and January 2018. The relevance of the study stems from both its objectives and its methodology. On the one hand, the aim was to characterise the profile, motivations and purposes of the developers of Donald Trump apps; and on the other, to identify the main features of the discourses in the most downloaded apps. The study relied on two resources: a qualitative questionnaire of open questions for developers (n=376), and a quantitative analysis of the content of apps that exceeded 5,000 downloads (n=117). The questionnaire identified the influence of political current affairs in the developers’ ideological and economic motivations, while the content analysis revealed the trends found over time, as well as the themes, discourses and ideological positioning of the most popular apps about Donald Trump. The findings provide an empirical basis for how the content of these apps was articulated with the news; the influence of content that went viral; hegemonic discourses; and the role played by developers of new expressive, commercial, informative and persuasive proposals in the intersection between mobile apps and political campaigns

Microbiological and structural aspects of granular sludge from autotrophic denitrifying reactors.

Denitrification is applied in the tertiary treatment of wastewater to reduce N-pollutants. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH), CARD (catalyzed reporter deposition)-FISH, cloning, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied to follow the evolution of the microbial composition and structure of granular sludge in autotrophic denitrifying bioreactors fed with nitrate and thiosulfate. With this goal, FISH oligonucleotide probes for the autotrophic denitrifiers, Thiobacillus denitrificans and Thiomicrospira denitrificans, were designed and their utility tested. CARD-FISH and cloning data showed that bacterial diversity changed with bioreactor operation time. After 110 days of operation, the abundance of Thiobacillus denitrificans cells increased considerably: from 1 to 35% of total DAPI-stained cells and from no isolated clones to 30% of the total positives clones. This fact strongly suggests that this microorganism played a dominant role in the autotrophic denitrification. The Archaeal diversity remained almost unchanged and it was mainly represented by Methanosaeta soehngenii. Scanning electron microscopy results indicated a considerable loss in the integrity of the sludge granules during the operation, with risk of sludge buoyancy.pre-print370 K

Abstract: Vocational training is a key part of the Educational System in that it provides training for employment and prepares for lifelong learning. The aim of this research is to make a radiography of Regulated Vocational Training in Spain. To this end, an exhaustive documentary review of primary and secondary sources has been carried out to provide an overview of these studies at present. The results show the need to articulate actions to bring the educational system closer to the reality of the professional world. And, on the other hand, it has been discovered that, increasingly, Vocational Training studies are presented as an effective alternative to university studies, since they imply a quick labor insertion and the graduate has at his disposal specific job positions in accordance with his academic training
