Acute lumbar intervertebral disc herniation occurring after somersault in a girl

    No full text
Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (LIDH), although common in adults, is rare in childhood and adolescents and especially in patients less than 16 years of age. The most common cause of LIDH in this age group is trauma. Also, sports-related traumas may be a cause of LIDH in children. We report a 12-year-old girl of acute LIDH presenting with low-back pain and muscle weakness after somersault in her school. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a herniated nucleus pulposus at L4-L5 level. Herniated nucleus pulposus was removed. After the surgery, pain ceased. The patient returned to the school life 20-day after the operation. © 2008 IOS Press. All rights reserved

Microanatomical Study of the Intracranial Abducens Nerve: Clinical Interest and Surgical Perspective

    No full text
AIM: The microanatomy of the abducens nerve (AN) is important for clinical reasons and surgical approaches as it is located in the petroclival region. The incidence of branching and duplication of the abducens nerve are unknown and mechanisms relating to paralysis of the nerve in indirect conditions are yet to be clarified

Surgical treatment of 13 pediatric patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome

We present our experience with the treatment of 13 patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome. The common presenting symptom and associated central nervous system anomaly were enlargement of head and occipital encephalocele, respectively. Eleven out of 13 patients were treated surgically after stabilization of systemic medical status. Two patients could not be operated because of poor medical condition. In 6 patients with an opened passage between posterior fossa cyst and lateral ventricle, cystoperitoneal shunt system with medium pressure valve was the treatment of choice. In 5 patients with no relation between cyst and ventricle, cystoperitoneal and ventriculoperitoneal shunting with 'Y' connectors were applied separately. Another patient with a shunt infection was treated by shunt system renewal combined with parenteral antibiotics. One patient died 7 months after the operation due to recurrent meningitis

Microanatomical Characteristics of the Petrosphenoidal Ligament of Gruber

    No full text
AIM: The petrosphenoidal ligament (PSL, or Gruber's ligament) is located between the petrous apex (PA) and posterior clinoid process (PCP). Details of its anatomy are conflicting in the few studies that exist in the literature. We performed this study to describe in detail the microanatomical characteristics of Gruber's ligament

Cross-cultural adaptation, reliability and validity of the Turkish version of Patient-Specific Functional Scale in patients with chronic neck pain

    No full text
Background/aim: Current clinical guidelines recommend to use both clinical and self-reported measurements for evaluation of chronic neck pain. Among the self-reported outcomes, Neck disability index and patient-specific functional scale are the most widely used and recommended instruments. The purpose of our study was to determine the test-retest reliability and validity of patient-specific functional scale which was not validated in Turkish language previously

In this case report, a thoracic extradural metastatic pheochromocytoma withoutbony invasion, is presented. The disease which has been identified with it's symptoms,bio-chemical features, radiological appearance, histological diagnosis has beendiscussed in comparison with malignant pheochromocytoma metastases in theliterature. The origin of this tumor is the adrenal glands. Our review of the literatureshows that tumor has primary metastasis in bony structures of the spine and thendemonstrates secondary intraspinal invasion. This is the first case report of an epiduralmetastasis from malignant pheochromocytoma without a bony invasion
