    The Effect of the Implementation of the Education on the Knowledge and Status of Dental Cleanliness in Elderly in Darul Imarah Aceh Besar District, Indonesia

    BACKGROUND: Oral health problems are ones that must be considered by the elderly. Dental and oral health in the elderly is essential and closely related to general health. Overcoming this problem needs necessary to optimize the elderly’s ability to maintain dental and oral hygiene by providing information and skills. AIM: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of self-empowerment-based education packages on knowledge and oral hygiene of the elderly in the Darul Imarah district of Aceh Besar. METHODS: This study’s design was a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest design with control group design. This research is located in the village of Darul Imarah District, Aceh Besar. A sample of 80 older adults who were divided into two groups. Each group numbered 40 people. The criteria for this sampling were inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis used univariable, bivariable, and multivariate using paired samples test and independent t-test. RESULTS: The results showed a difference in mean knowledge from post-test I to post-test II (P = 0.002). The results of the multivariate analysis of the knowledge, attitude, and behavior variables on the maintenance of dental and oral hygiene had a significant effect on the periodontal health status of pre-elderly (p = 0.001). The statistical test results showed that there was an effect of self-empowerment-based education on the knowledge of the elderly, p = 0.001. The results showed that there was no difference in knowledge in the control group in the post-test I and post-test 2 with a value of p = 0.72, and there was a difference in knowledge in the intervention group in the post-test I and post-test 2 with a value of p = 0.002. There were differences in dental and oral hygiene in the control group, and there were differences in dental and oral hygiene after being given the intervention with a value of p = 0.003. CONCLUSION: There is a significant effect of providing a self-empowerment-based education package to the elderly on the level of knowledge and oral hygiene status of the elderly in Darul Imarah District, Aceh Besar (p <0.05)

    Background: A coverage of health education based on management is health education in the family/household. The study aimed to find out the difference in dental health education between discussion and simulation method to knowledge, attitude, and behavior of mothers in the management of dental hygiene of children and dental and oral hygiene status of mothers. Method: The study was a quasi experiment that used pre test and post test group study design. Subject of the study consisted of 60 people divided into 2 groups, comprising 30 mothers of students of Pertiwi Kindergarten that were given dental health education using discussion method and 30 mothers of students of Aminah Kindergarten that were given dental health education using simulation method. Data were obtained from questionnaire to assess knowledge, attitude and behavior and from examination of dental hygiene using PHP-M method. Data analayis used paired t-test, independent t-test and delta analysis. Result: Based on pre test the result showed equality in knowledge, attitude, behavior and status of dental and oral health (p>0.05). There was difference in average score of knowledge, attitude, behavior and status of dental and oral health between Group I and Group II from pre-test to post-test I

    The Development of Psycho-educational Module of Dental Management for Primary Caregivers and Teachers of Autism Children: A Qualitative Study in Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

    BACKGROUND: The prevalence of autism increases globally and in Indonesia. Children with autism experience intellectual, behavioral, and anxiety disorders, including fear of dental care. These children often experience difficulty brushing teeth and are reluctant to visit dental care facilities. The poor oral and dental cleanness in children with autism may increase the risk of dental and oral diseases such as periodontal disease and caries. One preventive effort is providing psycho-education to the child and the people surrounding them (parents or caretaker and teacher). Psycho-education modules should be adequate and based on the client’s needs. AIM: The aim of the study was to explore the contents of the psycho-educational module as a guide for primary caregivers and teachers to prevent dental and oral health problems of the child with autism. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using focus group discussions (FGD) and in-depth interviews from 12 November to 26 December 2020. This study involved 11 primary caregivers and 14 teachers of the autism-special school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The FGD and in-depth interviews were recorded and verbatim transcripted and were analyzed by thematic content analysis. RESULTS: We found three topics required to maintain the dental and oral health of a child with autism, namely: Management of behavior in autistic children, oral-dental treatment, and nutrition management in dental-oral health in autistic children. Available materials used practical and straightforward language. CONCLUSION: The study findings provide an important information as a new approach contained in the module on maintaining oral health to improve the health status of autistic children

    Karies merupakan penyakit pada jaringan keras gigi yang berupa proses demineralisasi pada jaringan keras gigi (email, dentin, sementum) yang disebabkan oleh aktivitas bakteri pada rongga mulut. Karies merupakan salah satu masalah kesehatan gigi dan mulut yang paling umum terjadi di masyarakat. Salah satu penyebab terjadinya karies adalah bakteri. Bakteri akan menguraikan substrat karbohidrat yang melekat di rongga mulut dan membentuk plak. Salah satu penyebab karies adalah kebersihan gigi yang kurang baik. Pengabdian masyarakat ini menggunakan metode ceramah dan wawancara. Sasaran kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah murid kelas I MIN Teladan Kota Banda Aceh yang berjumlah 30 anak.. Sebelum dilakukan penyuluhan, terlebih dahulu dilakukan pre-test, kemudian melakukan wawancara kepada anak untuk mengukur tingkat pengetahuannya. Realisasi kegiatan ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kemampuan anak untuk menyikat gigi dengan baik dan benar. Hasil Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini menunjukan pengetahuan sebelum penyuluhan berada pada katagori baik yaitu sebanyak 16.7% meningkat menjadi 90% setelah diberikan penyuluhan. Berdasarkan hasil kegiatan ini dapat disimpulkan terdapat peningkatan pengetahuan anak setelah diberikan penyuluhan dalam bentuk ceramah dan demonstrasi cara menyikat gigi yang baik dan benar
