European canker, caused by Neonectria ditissima, is an important disease of apple in the temperate climate of southern Brazil. Monthly inoculations of this fungus were carried out on various wound types on cvs ‘Gala’ and ‘Fuji’ over two productive cycles to better understand the seasonal susceptibility of apple trees. Wound types were: bud scars (September), petal scars (October), fruit-thinning scars (November), leaf scars (from November to May), fruit-picking wound scars for ‘Gala’ (February) and ‘Fuji’ (March), and pruning wounds (June to August). One hundred plants of each cultivar were used and inoculation sites were monitored periodically for symptom expression. At each assessment, visible lesions were counted and pruned, and wounds were painted. Differences in wound susceptibility occurred throughout the year. Most lesions resulted from inoculations of pruning wounds. Inoculations performed in spring on bud and petal scars resulted in lower disease expression than inoculations later in the season. Topic Segmentation: How Much Can We Do by Counting Words and Sequences of Words

Get PDF
In this paper, we present an innovative topic segmentation system based on a new informative similarity measure that takes into account word co-occurrence in order to avoid the accessibility to existing linguistic resources such as electronic dictionaries or lexico-semantic databases such as thesauri or ontology. Topic segmentation is the task of breaking documents into topically coherent multi-paragraph subparts. Topic segmentation has extensively been used in information retrieval and text summarization. In particular, our architecture proposes a language-independent topic segmentation system that solves three main problems evidenced by previous research: systems based uniquely on lexical repetition that show reliability problems, systems based on lexical cohesion using existing linguistic resources that are usually available only for dominating languages and as a consequence do not apply to less favored languages and finally systems that need previously existing harvesting training data. For that purpose, we only use statistics on words and sequences of words based on a set of texts. This solution provides a flexible solution that may narrow the gap between dominating languages and less favored languages thus allowing equivalent access to information

A persona-based modelling for contextual requirements

[Context & Motivation] Personas are a technique used to guide developing products accommodating people diversity. They are archetypes reflecting common combinations of users’ characteristics, needs and goals. Persons can add a human-centred facet to requirements engineering practice which is often revolving around the concept of business roles. [Question/Problem] Goal modelling is an example of mainstream requirements engineering approach driven by business roles and their responsibilities and needs represented as goals. Personnel in the system are expected to act according to this prescriptive specification. Personnel diversity is often seen as a customization and design issue. [Principal idea/Results]. In this paper we propose to consider such diversity as a conditional context in requirements modelling and, as an approach, augment Contextual Goal Model (CGM) with personas as a new contextual dimension. Additionally, we propose an algorithm to analyse the achievability of CGM goals in the presence of the personas contexts variation. We evaluate our approach using a Mobile Personal Emergency Response System (MPERS) implemented as a prototype. [Contribution] Our persona-based modelling approach paves the way to augment requirements with a consideration of people diversity and enrich the business perspective with a more user-centred design facet

Triplite-zwieselite, fluorapatite and isokite evolution products from the Sítio do Castelo mine at Folgosinho, Guarda

In the mid 70's, the ‘Sitio do Castelo’ mine has exploited an important lens of quartz near the village of Folgosinho. The open pit, as well as the several galleries, has exposed intensely oxidized phosphatic bodies, where it was possible to observe a wide variety of secondary phosphates. The recognition of several phosphatic bodies allowed definig two types of occurences: 1- Triplite - zwieselite phosphate as the sole primary phosphate; 2- Triplite - Zwieselite in association with fluorapatite and isokite. The weathering of these phosphates in combination with several sulphide minerals (sphalerite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite) resulted in different paragenetic associations, which serve as argument for the proposed evolutionary paths.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is widely treatment for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) but there is no consensus in literature regarding the most effective treatment parameters. OBJECTIVE: To compare two NMESintra-vaginal protocols for the treatment of SUI in women. METHODS: The study included 20 volunteers with an average age of 55.55±6.51 years and with the clinical diagnosis of SUI. Volunteers were randomly divided into two groups: group 1 (G1) received NMES with medium-frequency current and group 2 (G2) received NMES with low-frequency current. Functional assessments of pelvic floor muscles (PFM) were performed by perineometry. The severity of signs and symptoms were objectively evaluated using the 1 hour pad test and subjectively evaluated using a visual analog scale that measured the discomfort caused by the SUI. Shapiro-Wilk test was used to analyze data normality, and the Friedman test was used to analyze nonparametric data. For analysis of symptoms related to SUI the Fisher exact test and the Mann-Whitney test were used. Significance level of 5% was set for all data analysis. RESULTS: No significant differences (p>0.05) were found between groups for any of the variable assessed. The within group analysis of initial and final evaluations (after NMES) demonstrated significant differences (p<0.05) in amount of urine lost, the discomfort caused by urinary incontinence and perineal pressure for both treatment groups. CONCLUSION: The two NMES protocols applied were equally effective in the treatment of SUI.CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: A estimulação elétrica neuromuscular (EENM) é amplamente utilizada no tratamento da incontinência urinária de esforço (IUE), no entanto não há consenso na literatura sobre os parâmetros de tratamento mais eficazes.
