Meson Spectroscopy in Photo-production at CLAS

Photo-production of excited mesons in the 1-2 GeV mass range decaying via multi-pion or multi-kaon emission has been investigated at the TJNAF\thanks{This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and The U.S. National Science Foundation.} experiment E01-017 (g6c) in the 4.8−5.44.8-5.4 GeV photon beam energy range. The main objective of the experiment is to extract resonance parameters of the produced states by way of a Partial Wave Analysis (PWA) technique. In this paper, we will focus on the general characteristics of the data distributions in both the neutral and charged 3-pion final states, i.e. π+π−π0\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0} and π+π+π−\pi^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, CIPANP 2003 proceedings contributio

SMaRT: Small Machine for Research and Teaching

We introduce SMaRT, a 16-bit single-cycle RISC-type processor with 16-bit-wide instructions. SMaRT features the novel concept of 2.5-address instructions to avoid the data loss that inherently exists in 2-address processors. Additionally, SMaRT’s short-branch instructions take advantage of the temporal locality of reference in accessing the upper or lower halves of the CPU’s 16x16 orthogonal register file. This allows SMaRT to significantly extend the range of the short-branch instructions. We show that these novelties are achieved at almost no performance cost and negligible hardware cost. SMaRT has four operation modes, namely Single-Step, to execute one instruction at a time, Manual, to display and inspect individual locations of data memory, Run, to run the whole code nonstop, and Init, to copy a read-only memory to the data memory for initialization purposes. We also implement and present an input/output port and a sorting coprocessor, and then hook it up to SMaRT through the port as an example. We have successfully synthesized the combined SMaRT and the sorting coprocessor into the Altera Cyclone II FPGA chip, and tested them

Graham Swift and the Ethical Self

Ethical theories study the nature and criteria of right and wrong action, obligation, value and the good life, and the related principles. Peter Singer, in his book, Ethics simply states that 'Ethics is about how we ought to live.' (P-3) Graham Swift (born in 1949) is an English novelist whose work is tinged with contemporary ethical issues. He creates situations in which his characters look for better ways to relate to and with each other. These characters try to understand themselves, their place in a world that baffles them, and their relations to others. In this paper we will try to illustrate and discuss the various methods Swift’s characters adopt to wrestle with and at the same time address their contemporary problems. We will trace their problems back to modernity and its adoption of a philosophy or a system of thought that was purely rational and therefore uneven and incomplete. We will consider Swift’s work in general as postmodern with subjects and concerns reflecting some of the contemporary ethical and critical debates. We will also perceive and present Swift’s work as a response to the inadequacy of modernity and an attempt to come to terms with its shortcomings in the hope of an improved and wiser modernity. We will suggest that in Swift's work there is a visible progressive development from melancholia to mourning, meaning that Swift's latest characters are more prepared to accept their losses and move on towards a healthy mourning. We will see that in the modern epoch, which in the main, is not designed according to human values, Swift's characters endeavour to take charge of defining themselves, of writing their own stories, and their own values in their own ways. In order to sustain their identities, we will show that Swift's characters choose different methods, which, regardless of their consequences, may be considered ethically valuable and in harmony with human dignity. In order to tailor this study to the size of an article, we will be as concise as possible. In so doing, the main focus will be on Swift’s major novel, Waterland (1983) and his last two novels; Last Orders (1996), and The Light of Day (2003). Key words: Graham Swift; History; Modernity; Ethics; Self; Melancholia; Healthy mournin

Y(Ni, Mn)O3 epitaxial thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition

High–quality epitaxial YNixMn1-xO3 thin films have been successfully grown on SrTiO3 (100) (STO) by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the films deposited on STO are fully c-axis oriented and exhibit in-plane alignment. The magnetic transition temperatures (Tc) of the films (both x=0.33 and 0.5) are equivalent to the values of the corresponding bulk samples. However, when x=0.5, the films show magnetic properties quite different from those of bulk samples. This difference may be caused by the structure distortion in these films.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. to be publishe

Keynes’ Unscientific Theory of Consumption Function and Its False Policy Implication for the Multiplier Effect: A Review of Disaggregated Evidence

    Get PDF
The assumption that the Marginal Propensity to Consume (MPC) and the resulting multiplier are fairly stable at the aggregate level irrespective of the time frame, commonly articulated in some post-Keynesian literature and introductory macroeconomic texts and universally used as the building block of fiscal policy decisions, are false concepts. In this enquiry, we examine the robustness of this proposition using disaggregated disposable income to demonstrate that neo-Keynesians’ generalization that consumers in different income brackets would react similarly to a change in income is refuted by the weight of historical evidence. We derive estimates of the MPC in the short-run and the long-run using recent data from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). We show that the whole is not the sum of its parts when it comes to the MPC. This insight should give teachers a more accurate description of short-run consumption behavior. Our objective is to extend students’ understanding of the complexity of the economy and reveal that there are many intricate mysteries that are yet to be expounded (Note 1)

The Obstacles of Choosing Vaginal Delivery and Policies to Increase it from the Point of View of Gynecologists and Midwives

    Get PDF
Background: In the last few years, the rate of cesarean section has increased all around the world. This study was conducted to investigate the obstacles of performing vaginal delivery and policies to increase vaginal delivery from the point of view of gynecologists and midwives. Methods: A total of one hundred gynecologists and midwives working in Kerman participated in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected using a questionnaire included three parts of demographic data, 13 questions regarding obstacles of normal vaginal delivery (NVD) and 10 questions regarding policies to encourage NVD. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney test and through SPSS19 software. Results: There was no significant difference between gynecologists and midwives in regard to mean scores of NVD obstacles and policies to encourage NVD. Among the obstacles, increase of maternal age in the first pregnancy and being afraid of delivery complications obtained the highest and the lowest mean scores respectively .Among the policies to encourage NVD, careful prenatal care had the highest mean score and increasing the cooperation between doctors and midwives had the lowest mean score. Conclusion: According to the results, the most important obstacle of NVD is high maternal age in the first pregnancy and the best recommended solution to encourage NVD is careful prenatal care leading to mothers' preparation for NVD

Has the Amplitude of Business Cycles Deepened in the Post-World War II Era? A Variance Analysis of Thirty-Five Countries

According to Karl Marx, business cycles in capitalist economies should increase in amplitude over time. In this hypothesis, income and wealth inequality should increase within a capitalist system, resulting in increased economic instability. Thanks to Keynesian policy recommendations, governments and central banks have discovered policy options for correcting downturns in the economy. However, if Marx is correct, policy makers will face business cycle movements ever-increasing in severity. In this article, we review Marx’s hypothesis in the literature. Further, we briefly look at recent (post-war) data to see if empirical evidence supports Marx’s original claim
