    Association between floating toe and toe grip strength in school age children: a cross-sectional study

    [Purpose] This study investigated the association between floating toe and toe grip strength. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 635 Japanese children aged 9-11 years participated in this study. Floating toe was evaluated using footprint images, while toe grip strength was measured using a toe grip dynamometer. All 1, 270 feet were classified into a floating toe group and a normal toe group according to visual evaluation of the footprint images. Intergroup differences in toe grip strength were analyzed using the unpaired t-test and logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, gender, and Rohrer Index. [Results] There were 512 feet (40.3%) in the floating toe group. Mean toe grip strength of the feet with floating toe was significantly lower than that of normal feet (floating toe group, 12.9 ± 3.7 kg; normal toe group, 13.6 ± 4.1 kg). In addition, lower toe grip strength was associated with floating toe on logistic regression analysis after adjustment for age, gender, and Rohrer Index (odds ratio, 0.954; 95% confidence interval, 0.925-0.984). [Conclusion] This study revealed that lower toe grip strength was significantly associated with floating toe. Therefore, increasing toe grip strength may play a role in preventing floating toe in school age children

    Persistent Hypochloremia Is Associated with Adverse Prognosis in Patients Repeatedly Hospitalized for Heart Failure

    Background: Hypochloremia reflects neuro-hormonal activation in patients with heart failure (HF). However, the prognostic impact of persistent hypochloremia in those patients remains unclear. Methods: We collected the data of patients who were hospitalized for HF at least twice between 2010 and 2021 (n = 348). Dialysis patients (n = 26) were excluded. The patients were divided into four groups based on the absence/presence of hypochloremia (<98 mmol/L) at discharge from their first and second hospitalizations: Group A (patients without hypochloremia at their first and second hospitalizations, n = 243); Group B (those with hypochloremia at their first hospitalization and without hypochloremia at their second hospitalization, n = 29); Group C (those without hypochloremia at their first hospitalization and with hypochloremia at their second hospitalization, n = 34); and Group D (those with hypochloremia at their first and second hospitalizations, n = 16). Results: a Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that all-cause mortality and cardiac mortality were the highest in Group D compared to the other groups. A multivariable Cox proportional hazard analysis revealed that persistent hypochloremia was independently associated with both all-cause death (hazard ratio 3.490, p < 0.001) and cardiac death (hazard ratio 3.919, p < 0.001). Conclusions: In patients with HF, prolonged hypochloremia over two hospitalizations is associated with an adverse prognosis

    Reconnaissance report on the 2000 Tottori-ken Seibu Earthquake

    金沢大学理工研究域地球社会基盤学系Damage done to civil structures by the 2000 Tottori-ken Seibu Earthquake was investigated. Field surveys were made from October 8-10 by eight members dispatched by the JSCE in cooperation with other researchers. Descriptions are given of the earthquake, seismic ground motion; the damage done to such civil structures as roads, road bridges, lifelines, dams, port facilities; slope failures; and public risk management. Although peak ground accelerations were extremely intensive, structural damage was not as severe as compared with the average damage caused by past earthquakes in Japan. Such disaster responses as search and rescue activities, emergency responses, disaster information communication, and victim supports are discussed
